Hi there,
I'm a major coffee addict with a 3 cup habit to kick-start me in the mornings.
I was thinking perhaps I should try to cut down even while I'm trying. I'm at 4 DPO so figure I'm sort of safe at the moment, but I suppose if things go according to plan :fingerscrossed: there could be possible baby development starting as early as next week. I've bought some half-caf coffee so I guess I could try weaning myself off that way...
What does everyone else do?
Ang
I went cold turkey - I'm not a big coffee drinker but I am addicted to Red Bull (which is worse) so the day we decided to TTC I stoped drinking them. Its not too bad but I do get the odd 3pm ache :)
I went cold turkey (had a couple of cups in the morning for breakfast) but had no side effects what so ever.
I drank decaf through out my pregnancy and up unitl about a week ago (Jade is nine months now) because I am still BFing. Although the new introduction of caffene doesn't seemd to have affected her.
Good luck.

hey try not to have more than 4 a day:eek: , its hard i used to drink at least 10:eek:
I know the feeling - I'm a major caffeine junkie!
Throughout my pregnancy and while bf I drank decaf but it's not the same! I'm 5 dpo at the moment and have been having 1 a day but will probably switch to decaf from next week onwards until the next af (which hopefully won't be for a very long time :D )
It's so annoying - the time when we are soooo tired and most in need of coffee (i.e. early pregnancy and with a new baby if bf) is the one time we're not allowed any. It's not fair!

I use to only have 1 or 2 cups a day but cut them out cold turkey as well. My DS is IVF and it was strongly recommended that I stop drinking caffeine altogether so I switched to freshly squeezed fruit/veg juices everyday. If you drink coke/pepsi and tea I'd also cut them out. Also get DH to do the same as well as cut down on drinking alcohol too which can be a TTC issue.
Are you taking folate tabs? A lot of us girls on here before conceiving and when pregnant have taken, and those that are preggers now are taking ELEVIT tabs. They are really great - bit expensive but IMO well worth it. Some of the girls on here have said that the tabs did not agree with them but give it ago and see what you think.
GOOD LUCK with TTC :fingerscrossed:
Wow, I didn't realise coffee was that bad when TTC.
I'm by no means an addict, but do like one in the morning and maybe every second day either a diet coke at lunch. Very rarely would I have a third.
Is it recommened to cut it out while TTC or only once your are pg?

I was an addict too but one of my first signs of being pregnant was that I could no longer stand the taste of coffee (my mum had the same symtom with her pregnancy). It made it easy to go cold turkey but I still craved it a lot, occassionally I would try to drink one and could never finish it as it tasted so bad. Even now I haven't really gone back to drinking coffee, except if its iced coffee, which is probably a good thing as i don't have to go through withdrawal again now that I'm TTC.

Thanks for the feedback, girls.
My hubby switched us to half-caf this morning by his own volition! Clearly he thinks I'm going to have trouble stopping on my own! I guess I'll go down to decaf next week perhaps...baby steps!
Butterfly Kisses - yes, I've been taking folate for almost a year now since that's how long we've been trying off and on.
Have a good day,

Does anyone know WHY we are so discouraged from caffeine while TTC? I can understand the issue during pregnancy and BF but why do I have to give up my expresso in the morning until I have a positive pregnancy test?

Apparently, a high intake of caffeine (more than 1 cup a day) can increase the time it takes a women to conceive. It can also increase the risk of miscarriage when pregnant as caffeine passes from mother to baby. This also occurs when breast feeding. Fathers should cut down too when trying to conceive.

:: Good Question :::rolleyes:
I use to drink at least 16 espresso's per day {sometimes more:eek: }
I also went cold-turkey, no other way to go. I haven't had any withdrawl either, there is a greater desire...to give a conception the best chances of developing.
I drink decaf tea - not too bad. Normally, I would drink Dilmah, but don't like their decaf. Have switched to Tetley.
Haven't touched decaf coffee. As I've noticed a caffine hit.
Also read about all the chemicals needed to remove the caffine from the coffee beans, even if there is a hint of truth together with alot of fiction, I don't know how they decaffinate coffee. There is alot of variations.
So I stick with decaf tea, even if it contains a hint of caffine. Tea has less:D
As far as the decaf coffee goes, I did a bit of research on this when I was pg with DS and apparently there are 2 different ways they decaffeinate the coffee. One is with chemicals which are pretty nasty and you're probably better off having caffeine, the other is with steam (I think) - the method is called 'swiss water' and this is the better if you're pregnant (or planning on being pg) and want to drink decaf.
I got an organic swiss water decaf from my local supermarket - it was a bit more expensive but worth it for the peace of mind.
Of course if you want complete peace of mind cold turkey is the best way to go and decaf tea is actually quite nice...

Caffeine can be found in tea, coffee, hot chocolate drinks, cola drinks, and CHOCOLATE / chocolate products (eg chocolate syrup). Of course, the amount of caffeine found in these products varies, with the most being in expresso coffee and instant coffee, midway is tea and cola drinks and chocolate is towards the bottom of the list.
So yes, we have to cut down on our favourite products which bring us so much joy (I am a self confessed chocolate and tea addict myself).

I was a big caffeine addict before I got pregnant! I LOVE Coke Zero and would have at least one at day and a coffee...
Now I am down to having a coffee in the morning and that's it! I cant give that one up.....
Chocolate is another thing though - LOVE chocolate!!! Although I am not craving it very much at all...
