Hi there,

I'm REALLY wanting success with bf my #2 bub when he arrives in APril 09. With DS, I had no success at all and almost died with pain, so gave up.

Wondering everyone's opinions on baby led attachment after birth. You know, just putting bub straight onto Mum's chest and letting him/her search independently for Mum's breast and nipple for the very first feed.

Does this actually make a difference re good attachment and bf success in general??? I don't think I properly allowed my DS to attach until the morning after he was born. I was so exhausted, I blacked out completely and woke up the next day with him next to my bed. :( So I'm starting to realise how missing that important time straight after birth may have affected our bf relationship from then on.

I dunno.

I wouldn' like to say that one persons way is necessarily better than another - different strokes for different folks n all but I believe this is really encouraged as the thing to do. That initial skin on skin contact is sooo incredible (my bubba is nearly 6months but my eyes are nearly welling up now remembering how powerful it felt)

My midwives talked it up and there are some beautiful clips about it (letting bubs find his own way) on the internet (try utube maybe).

If u r not to exhausted after ur birth some close contact with ur bubs is awesome and to have ur little person find their own way and attach is just gorgeous.

Good luck with ur birth and with BF this time around.

:hugs:

I think it is a pretty special way to do it, have you watched the video footage of it? Pretty amazing.

I think it is a great thing to do if you want to, I am in two minds this birth, I do want to let bub take his/her time, but I am also very very keen to get bub on the breast as i have a history of bleeding, so I want that good nipple stimulation happening ASAP.

If i weren't worried about the bleeding/placenta stuff, I'd certainly be giving it a go, it would just be so fascinating to see it in action...and if bub didn't seem to be making too much progress with it, no harm done, hey?

As for if it really helps with breastfeeding initiation etc, well, I really don't know...I'd love to see more research done on it. I'm sure it doesn't hurt, that's for sure! :)

I am hoping to do baby led attachment when I have a 2nd baby. With DD I had a c/section so I didn't get skin on skin contact, and the middie helped me too, by grabbing my boob and squeezing my nipple!! It killed, but I didn't know any better. My nipples went a funny shape, I had grazzing and scabs too. It hurt for about 6 weeks and it got better!

The good news is that I am still breastfeeding DD, and she is 15 months. :)

All the best to you! :hugs:

I did baby led attachment with Sage when she was born 13 days ago :) It was beautiful! The way she maneuvred her body around on my bare chest/tummy and found the breast was jaw-dropping. She latched on perfectly and we havent had a single attachment problem
