My pregnancy was very uneventful, no morning sickness really, unless you count when I brushed my teeth and stuck the toothbrush down my throat, lived on nutella sandwiches and worked until 36 weeks.
I was due on the 12/12 which was a Monday and thought "ok, i've heard spicy food can bring it on" so we ordered out for Chinese food and had squid with spicy salt. Enjoyed dinner immensely watched a movie and then I was left on the couch to read a book while the boy went off to bed to get his beauty sleep.
Laying on the couch, minding my own business, enjoying my book, and all of a sudden, i'm thinking "oh ****, I think I just wet myself, oh ****, no I didn't". off I race down the hallway to get the boy out of bed, waking him, and he's like "what do you want?" Trying to tell him that my waters broke and keep him calm, and hold a towel between my legs, not an easy task.
Off to the hospital, coz thats what they tell you to do if your waters break, they give me the once over, and i'm thinking "this is it, i'm gonna be in the 3% that has a baby on it's due date" and they send me home coz they're saying "we think you wet yourself". One of the midwives on that night is of a different opinion and tells me she's pretty sure that it is my waters and not a bladder malfunction.
Anyway, home I toddle, pad in place, and they tell me to go and see my doctor on Monday, which I was doing anyway, being my due date.
Monday, doctor, he's thinking I had a bladder malfunction, even though i'm still leaking, but prescribes me antibiotics "just in case".
All week, leaking, leaking, come Thursday night 16/12 about 11pm and i'm thinking I have food poisoning, can't keep anything in, no chucky, just a constant flow from the other end (lovely I know), i'm in pain but no idea whats happening, so put on a movie G.I Jane, now that chick can handle pain!! I'm thinking these stomach pains are nothing compared to being booted in the face!
Laying on the couch, and it hits me that this is it, this is what it's about, toddle down to wake the boy at about 4:30am and then ring the hospital, they pretty much tell me to sit tight and wait until I have consistent contractions, "sitting tight" for a couple of hours and finally i've had enough and call the hospital again, the midwife tells me to have a bath, which I do, the contractions stop and I go off to bed until the midwife rings me back and says "I've spoken to your doctor and he wants you to come in". FINALLY!
I head to the hospital and find myself in a little room, with every Tom, **** and Harry coming in to have a look, then the midwife says "we think the baby is breech" so I need to be scanned before they will do anything.
Nope, baby is head down, they give me an internal, and they're like "Oh, you've done alot of the work yourself, you're about 5cm dilated". The pain is shocking, and then they tell me "Oh, pain, thats nothing, give it a couple of hours, you'll be climbing the walls" then they stick the centocin in and we're really on our way.
I'm already climbing the walls.
They finally admit me, and I had the best midwife, the same one who knew my waters had broken days ago! She stayed until her afternoon tea, then went and had her break, and some other poor midwife got stuck with me, she said something that really irritated me and I nearly chewed her face off, needless to say, I didn't see her again.
By this time it's about 5pm Friday, it's going on forever, the gas is making me sick, i'm sick of the shower, I look like a prune, my constant quesion is "how much longer do you think i'm going to be?" The constant reply "Oh, you're gonna be hours yet"
Come 7pm and i've had enough, i'm asking for the epidural before the anaestetist goes home for the weekend, i'm asked "are you sure? you've gone 8cm dilated with no pain relief". Damn right i'm sure, bring it on!!
The anaestetist comes and sticks the needle in my back, and they're asking me if it hurts, i'm literally laughing at them now, i've been in labour for close to a day and they're asking me if a needle hurts. Just for the record, no it didn't.
Anaesthetic, instant pain relief, thinking to myself "i'm an idiot, I should have done this hours ago!"
My doctor pays a visit, apparently he has nothing better to do on a Friday night than hang around the hospital, he tells me if the baby isn't out by 11:15pm he's coming back to help, well, 11:15 he's back, the baby ain't coming! By midnight i'm shaved and ready for a C-section! Apparently the baby may be a bit big?
Finally i'm getting wheeled away, they're taking the pumpkin out of me, about bloody time! This has been going on way too long!
Get to theatre, they cover me, put up curtains so that me and the boy can't see the gory stuff and they finally work their magic, magic alright, I can still feel the yanking when they tried to get the poor little poppet out.
They lifted him around the curtain so that I could see him, and all I remember saying is "oh my God, look at his head, what's wrong with his head?" He had the worst conehead, well the only conehead i've ever seen on a baby.
So, enter Liam Xander, 2:19am 17/12/05 a measly 9lb 5oz, certainly a long time coming!
