Dear All,

Just wanted to share a great revelation with you all...

I am 39 weeks pregnant and was warned by a friend (who ruined her mattress) that it was about time I protected mine in case my waters break at night... Recently we had a new fridge delivered and it was wrapped in that thin, malleable, polystyrene sheeting. With a piece big enough I placed it between the mattress and the mattress protector, and it's perfect - doesn't make a noise when I move at night, is completely waterproof and will protect the mattress.

Not sure where you could get this stuff, maybe a storage place, or a whitegoods store… or you could just buy a fridge!! ;)

I hope this helps someone else out. The forum has been so helpful to me, I just wanted to give a little back...

Thanks!

Alexi

Oh wow, I never thought of that! We just bought a new king size bed with mattress (and the mattress was as expensive as the bed) so thanks for the advice :hugs: I dont think we will buy a fridge though lol!

Thanks again

What a good idea :)

My waters broke while I was asleep in my bed and the matress is still in great condition, we're still using it now, almost 4 years later.

Chris has been worried about this - and the car seats - for a while now. We're just going to use some mattress protectors :) Like ones which we'll use for the cot eventually (provided I don't burst all over them!)

How much eerm.. mess does it actually make?? Anyone know? Or is it different for each pregnancy?

not everyone has their waters break spontaneously (small % actually I believe) but from what I understand there's a small leak or a great big flood of "waters"

Kaz Cooke notes in Up The Duff that it can do not nice things to your car upholstery.

I didn't make too much of a mess lol. There was a patch on my bed about the size of a dinner plate. But I think my undies, pj pants, sheet and matress protector absorbed the brunt of it, the matress wasn't all that wet.

It wasn't til I stood up when I noticed I was wet(I thought I'd peed my pants to be honest :o ) that it gushed out and I left a trail from the bedroom to the bathroom!

With DS 2, I was standing up when it happened, and it wasn't much at all. I started getting gushes when I was at hospital wandering the halls to get things moving.

Thankyou!! :D
We recently bought an expensive new bed....and my hubby works for Retravision so I'll be getting him to find me some of that stuff.
With DD my water broke in bed and now I'm paranoid I'll ruin the new mattress!

That's very organised :)

My waters never broke in a gush, it trickled and no one is sure when it started. Now my mattress is covered in breast milk which has squirted everywhere :D

Because I'm planning a homebirth, I was told to just buy some cheap plastic sheeting to put over the mattress (and enough to make a trail to the bathroom;) ). I got mine for about $1.95 p/m at WA Salvage - I assume similar can be bought from any DIY store? I have never had my waters break before labour/at the onset though, so this is the first time I have done this.

I put a cheap plastic table cloth under my matress protector then put towels on that under the sheet. Not that i needed to
