View Full Version : Sewing up the arm holes in sleeping bag
James likes to be wrapped - even now if he isnt his arms flail around and he knocks his dummy out, but he is constantly unwrapping himself at night I was thinking about sewing up the arm holes in his sleeping bag so I can stop wrapping him.
Does anyone think this is a good idea?

Trust me, if I could buy a baby straight jacket, I would!!
Sounds fine to me.
I seriously think you need to market some of your inventions, Carls.
Love,
Nan. xx

Nope doesnt sound like a good idea to me,
I second the idea of the "straight jacket"
Why not just continue wrapping him?

Because it wakes him up too much re-wrapping him at night, and if I dont and he has got his arms up near his chin he knocks his dummy out. Come to think of it he will probably still do that in a sleeping bag....*sigh*

Been there, done that. You could just try turning his sleeves inside out. You will probably find though that James will get his arms out through the neck hole.

I've actually seen some specially made ones with no arm holes on ebay lately....It sound like a fine idea to me...though like you say, he might just try and get his arms out through the neck

in my antenatal class on sat, they told us the ones without arms are a sids risk, as bub can pull their head easily into the sleeping bag...
Maybe just try and keep the room as warm as needed, so that if bub does get out its not a big problem.
I'm thinking of sewing the strap hole shut in mine. DS always manages to get his foot through it & gets cranky because he cant move around!

The Bonds gro-suits have little fold over bits so that you can tuck their hands in.:)

is knocking the dummy out the main issue? Could I suggest ditching the dummy and replacing it with a comforter and leaving his arms free. A comforter is big enough for him to find himself and shove back into his mouth to continue sucking.
Sorry but I think you are barking up the wrong tree.
How old is bubs? Once they are over 6months the dummy just makes it worse as you will be jumping through more and more hoops to try and keep bubs happy and it in the mouth!
I know how attatched mums get to them but I think you would be better served to get rid of the dummy! Use some other method to teach bubs how to get to sleep without it and not only will bubs sleep better but so will you!

Well I sewed up the arm holes (being a sleeping bag that just has holes and no arms) and he is actually settling a lot quicker, and last night slept so well!! He cant pull his head into the bag because the neck hole is far too small for that - i checked.
Its not a matter of his hands being cold, as he wears the wondersuits with the fold over hands to bed. He just has incredibly flailing arms that go everywhere and really seem to disturb him.
Glad I sewed them up!!! :smiliedance:
I just bought a 'grobag' that is sleeveless but has a press-stud on each side - this gives you to the option to either have their arms out or 'locked in'. You could probably add some sort of a fastener to a sleeping bag you already have - button, velcro...

I say, if it does the job, why not!!! go for it you creative creature
What a great idea! I might just start doing that myself. DS is 19 weeks old and is still wrapped for every sleep. He wears a polar fleece sleeping bag at night, then I just wrap his arms (very straight jacket style) so they are trapped by his side. I just use a muslin wrap, so he's not getting too hot.
