Hi everyone! Hope Ive posted this in the right spot! :o
My DD's playgroup is having a 'blue day' on friday and so everything is with that theme including the food we bring.
Ive been racking my brain to think of blue food I can take that doesnt have blue food colouring in it. (and is also not high in sugar)
I was thinking along the lines of a recipe with blueberries in it, but have only found blueberry and banana muffins. That would be ok but the bananas are so expensive at the moment! (I dont mind buying them for us at home, but just not to feed a large playgroup!).
Has anyone got any good blueberry recipies?
Has anyone got any other blue ideas?
Thanks in advance! :chef:

I was going to suggest putting food colouring in a cake mix.............

I thought of that, but Id like to find a natural alternative to the food colouring. Would blueberry juice work to colour it instead? I ask this because you can use strawberry juice or beetroot juice to get pink colouring.

You could make tiny merangues and use blueberry for colour or blue spinkles. The reason I say tiny is that merangues are packed with sugar. Merangues are very easy to make if you have an electric mixer.
Or you could make blue jelly cups with blue berries in them.... though I think jelly cystals have food colour in them.
What's wrong with food colouring? You only need a few drops...

No great reason really (its not that Im all against it or anything), its just that there will be a lot of food there with it so I figure I may as well add something healthy in the mix!

The juice from blueberries is actually rather purple. I'm not sure it would come out right if you tried to use it for colouring.
I remember reading once that blue foods are generally not appealling. No idea why. But there aren't many natural foods that are blue, if any.
Cupcakes or muffins with a blue candy on top? Can you get blue m&m's? Or just make pikelets with blueberries in them.

That could work actually!
if you are dieting, eat of a blue plate, apparently blue puts you off food, and makes it less attractive to eat, or something like that its an appetite supressent. To stop you having the munchies, put a blu light in your fridge.. Blue foods dont usually occur naturally, only blueberries.
How about a rice salad, but you will need a few drops of blue food colouring to make the rice blue

"Dieticians have welcomed the move to eliminate blue food colouring, saying it is the colour most likely to cause food chemical intolerance in children and adults. "
Why not stick to the muffins, but cut out the bananas and just include blueberries... ooh have found you a recipe and now I feel hungry :D
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INGREDIENTS:
2 cups fresh blueberries
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups all-purpose flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup margarine
1 1/2 cups white sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup milk
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease muffins tins, or line cups with paper liners.
Sprinkle 1/4 cup flour over blueberries, and stir to coat berries thoroughly.
In a small bowl, whisk together 2 cups flour, baking powder and salt.
In a large bowl, cream margarine, and gradually mix in sugar. Beat eggs, and stir into creamed mixture along with vanilla. Stir in milk alternately with flour mixture, mixing well after each addition. Fold in berries. Fill muffin cups 2/3 full with batter.
Bake for 25 minutes.

I remember reading once that blue foods are generally not appealling. No idea why. But there aren't many natural foods that are blue, if any. That is true but apparently food served in blue dishes is more appealing than food served in other coloured dishes/plates.
How about cupcakes in blue patty cases?
Sorry to hijack this thread but does anyone know which food colours are the safest to use? i will be making jazzy a ladybug cake for her 1st birthday so it needs to be really red. Also i think the recipe calls for dark blue colour for the head(so it looks black). Are there any natural ones?

This is too funny!! To this very day, my mum bemoans the day when I was in Pre-school & we had a "Feast of Colours". I was to sit at the blue table & my mum was driven crazy trying to come up with some appetising looking blue food! I think she had some blue-iced cupcakes in the end. They were a pretty sky-blue.
(PS Jazzysmum - I'm not sure about which food colours are the best. I'd have a look in the health food shops or ask around there. They may be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck!;) )
