i was behind a lady in the chemist line today, she had two big tins of formula and i noticed the label on the tin as she put it down onthe counter..
now not being a mother myself i've never actually bought formula, nor thought to read the labels of any friends with children.
but the bit i read stood out in saying something along the lines of the breast is best debate....
i know from what i've read breast is best, but seriously, if you've turned to formula, shouldnt you be allowed to make that decision without being bombarded on the formula tin to?

I saw that so called warning when I brought my first tin of formula. I think they put it there to make us feel worse than we already do about bottle feeding. It is something that has always peeved me. Personally, I think it should be removed.

that was my exact thought...
for most parents to start with it would be a hard decision, i think its stinky they shove it in ya face like that!

They're probably legally obligated to. It annoys me too. As if FF mums don't get enough hassles about their decision to FF.

Surely they don't think we enjoy spending $30 a week feeding a newborn?????

I'm pretty sure that the formula companies have no desire to make you feel guily over using formula. The warning is required by food standards law and is most likely a last ditch effort to educate some mums who may not know it.
Don't take it personally.

The thing that gets me is that breast is not always best!!!!
You have to do whatever makes bubs and you happy, I BF for 6 weeks and bubs was always screaming, ALWAYS!!!
I decided to try him on formula and honestly, for us, it seems it was the best decision i've made, bubs is happy which makes me happy
People asked me after i'd started the formula why I didn't do it earlier, and my answer was "well nobody told me it was ok". Yes, I needed reassurance that I wasn't "harming" my baby by giving him formula.
The debate will go on forever and MCHN will continue to indoctrinate all new mums, especially the young and inexperienced.
As long as my bubs isn't hungry, I don't care what i'm feeding him, boob or bottle!

They have to put it there legally. It's a bit like "Duh why didn't I think of that?"

I'm probably going to get some of the details of this wrong. But I did a quick read of a review of the label requirements by Australia and New Zealand Food Standards. Australia and New Zealand are voluntary signatories to a WHO standard on labelling of infant food. And that WHO standard is going to have been developed based on parent education needs around the world. Yes, we may be very well educated in Australia and not need to have it shoved in our face, but that's not the case everywhere.
And you're right MyLittleBoy, BF is not "best" when it isn't working.

Me too!
I breastfed for 3.5 months but I actually get just as good a feeling spooning the formula into his bottles and bottlefeeding him. Ever since switching to formula I havent felt bad for changing, and have never even thought about breastmilk being better. Maybe this is because I did breastfeed to start with? I dont know, but formula gives me warm fuzzies!:o

I try not to read the tin (apart from how much to use!!) - it makes me feel too guilty. 'breast is best' - like I'm not doing a good enough job... :(

I couldnt breast feed, not because of bub it was a personal thing not a choice i would prefer to make but icant breastfeed. I have found though it is easier because when the baby is young i could share the feeding, i could go out when i wanted and i knew how much he was getting. It isnt fair that they put it on the can though its not something i have ever taken much notice of.
