My GP recommended DS to be seen by a paediatrician due to having persistent constipation (even when on laxatives), loosing weight because of this and to have a lump on his back that is sitting right next to his spine checked out. He is almost 14 months and weights only 8.4kg.

I rang one of the paeds in Westmead and was shocked that it would take more than 3 months before DS could be seen (I know now after reading a few threads here that this is the norm). Anyway I decided to ring around for another paed to see if he could be seen earlier by someone else as he is already loosing weight, is stick thin and I didn't want him to be even more skinnier by the time his appointment came around. Plus the lump on his back is worrying me.

I rang this doctors surgery, where the receptionist said that they didn't have any available spots until the end of January. She then asked me how old my child is and what he is seeing the paed for. When I explained she said that it sounded like he needed to see the doctor sooner, took my name and number down and said that DS was on top of the waiting list!! She called me the next day and said that Paed would see him on Friday afternoon (which is tomorrow)! YAY!!

What a great receptionist! Last night when DS was screaming in pain and crying hysterically because he was pooping I can just remember thinking, thank goodness he is seeing the paed tomorrow. Hopefully the paed can find out what is wrong with DS and make him better. My GP is starting to think that it may be a thyroid problem but is relunctant to order blood tests for an almost 14 month old. She said its better to see paed and get them to decide if a blood test is needed.

Why does it take so long to see a child specialist??? You would think that a child is referred to one when absolutely needed so having to wait 3 to 4 months to see one is ridiculous. Especially if by waiting the childs condition will deteriorate!

Anyway, thank goodness for the understanding and nice receptionist!

That's great that you got in earlier - best of luck today.

I had the same things happen with my LO but I just asked them to please check and make sure that I couldn't get an earlier appointment as my bub was only 8 weeks at the time. I had a paeditrician call me back to do a phone consult and they phoned me back with an appointment for two dats later. It really pays to ask if you think it's urgent. Luckily too my paed. got us in at the Royal Childrens Hospital within a week - normally it's an 8 month wait
