View Full Version : Cycle length and timing of test??

Hi all,
This might seem like a silly question but I was just wondering if anyone knows what impact your normal cycle length would have on whether a test shows positive or not...
For example, my cycle is 26 days so assuming I ovulate as normal at around day 14, the day of MY period (should I do a test that day) is going to be earlier along in pregnancy than a person who's cycle is, say, 28+ days and tests on the day of THEIR period. Is that right? So by the time you get to period time, if you have a longer cycle, you've gone further along in pregnancy.. Yes???
Any advice appreciated for one very impatient hopeful-mum2be!

If it's any help my cycle is also 26 days and I didn't get a (very faint) positive test until Day 28. Even then I tested with a really good brand you can only get in the UK. The Aussie brands did not show a positive until Day 32 of my cycle.
Your best hope is if AF doesn't come, and keep testing. The more expensive the test you use does usually give the more accurate result earlier.
Good luck!

Hi there cosmic
well it sound kinda right what you wrote, i mean it would make sense. Its so hard working out all this mambo jumbo about ovulation and dates! Why is it soooo hard!! I got all confuse when i was trying to concieve- from timing to checking temprature to cevical mucus  The only thing it did was (go like a rabbit) dueing ovulation and it seem to work, i wanted to do a test before my period but after getting alot of helpfully advise in here i decided to wait untill the day after i missed my period.
If you think you could be you could try doing a test now, but i could come up negative due to not enought hcg levels in you body yet.
When is your period due? Hopefully this month the baby dust worked!!! :)
It really depends.
From what I have read, a cycle is in two parts.
The first part - up until ovulation, can be of any length, and is easily disrupted by stress etc.
However, the second part of your cycle is usually a fixed length of time, usually between 12 and 16 days, and is unique to every woman.
So if you have a long cycle, it is because you have ovulated later than usual in your cycle.
So, theoretically, any time YOU get pg, and test on the day when your period is due, regardless of the length of the cycle, you will still be at the same stage of pg.
ie - if your luteal phase ( the second part of the cycle from ov - period) is 14 days, that is how pg you will be regardless of cycle length.
I've probably confused you more, sorry - but a GREAT book to read is Taking Charge Of Your Fertility - Toni Weschler.

Hi all,
Thanks so much for all that advice. Ruth, I hope I'm like you. I did use a cheap test from Woolies. ;) (mind you, it said that it detects as low as 10ml!!!)
AF is due tomorrow for me, and I took the test this morning but it was negative. I thought it would be wishful thinking to test this early, but since my preferred Doc only works Monday and Friday I thought if there was a faint line I could get in today to confirm. But I have booked in for Friday in anticipation (as you do!) :)
This month I charted on Fertility Friend and it told me (based on temps only) that I ovulated on Day 16. That seems quite late - and would make my luteal phase only 10 days. I'm guessing FF got it wrong because of not enough info...?
Anyway, in a couple of days if AF hasn't arrived, I will do the other test, and failing that, check with the doc on Friday. Everything crossed!! :)

Thanks Angie, and I forgot to say thanks for that book recommendation too! What you said made perfect sense, not confusing at all!
