OK I've edited this thread - don't want to be Aussie bashing, I love it here.....

What else just doesn't taste how you expected it to here?

You're right - Cadbury's just isn't the same here. Nestle is okay, though :)

I expected Twisties to be like Wotsits. Wasn't. Pleasant enough in their own way but not at all what I was expecting to bite into.

My mum brought back some Cadbury chocolate for me from Englad and it does taste really different. Apparently... and don't quote me here.... because the weather is so much warmer here, Cadbury put something in the down under recipe to make it not melt.

Cadbury uses produce grown with slaves. Child slaves.

My hubby works for Quarantine and was always telling me about, mainly New Zealanders bringning in the same products we have here. I was astounded about why they would bother, when you can buy the same product same brand here. One day one of the clients gave him some chocolate... and something else now, can't remember but he said the taste was quite different.
Strange.... you'd think it would all taste the same!

Yeah, kiwi chocolate is definitely different. Whenever anyone returns from over there we are like flies all over them to get to their chocolate stash.

Coz they ALWAYS have one.

I thought the choccie in the UK was yummy.

well i bought some organic dark chocolate coated almonds recently and fell in love with my taste buds at about the moment the chocolate hit my tongue. it was truly delicious.
i think the cadburys is sweeter in the uk isn't it. i was disappointed with hungary jacks in london. lets see. i used to chew Extras over there, but couldn't handle them here in oz....too sweet and ghastly.
the real mccoys salt and vinegar chips were pretty damn good.

A Wotsit is a cheesey corn puff snack thingy. Has great nostalgic value as most Brits have had them since being on solid food - though they are crunchy, they melt in the mouth and so present no choking hazard. Dear god do they ever make a mess all over the couch though ...

I have recently had cadbury's sent over from london and OMG it was TO DIE FOR!!!! Currently lining up a more regular supply ;)

22-05-2006, 22:25
one of the reasons cadburys tastes bit shocking here is they put wheat glucose/starch in everything to stop melting...though fruit and nut seems to be free of this...I miss buttons...:D

sounds about right to me, I have to keep the choc I get from the UK in the fridge, even in a cool room it goes all icky and melted

Hi all
The kiwi Cadbury is definitely one of the best choccys in the world. Its because of the milk being such a high standard makes for creamier tastier choc. Haven't tasted UK Cadbury but assume they have the same - one of the upsides of having a lot of ****ty rainy weather is that it is good for the grass and hence produces nice dairy. I always get anyone coming on holiday to bring something with them. They have a country fudge one which is just devine!!!

Sweetness: they taste exactly the same - even make the mouth go all black.

I remember buying those for a penny a piece on my way home from school when I was little ... 5 of those, 5 of the fruit salad chews ...

*gets lost in a fog of nostalgia*

Oh they have masses of stuff there - depends what you like. :)

Blackcurrant Chewits are a killer for me ... I think to myself "just the one" but just keep going until the entire pack is gone.

If you'll be in Pitt Street anyway, take a look in "Sugar Fix" in the food court under Myer. Even more stuff to make your dentist happy!

I *love* Poppetts! I havent brought any online though because a) I would go so broke in 20 seconds and b) my diet would be ruined.

For my honeymoon me and DF want to go throughout the UK and I'll just leave all my clothes there to leave room in my suitcase for the masses of sweets I'll bring back :D

Kiwi Cadbury has a completely different taste too...YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Youre right! We toured the cadbury factory in Dunedin (the highlight of my honeymoon.....no really, it was!) and were told it was because of the milk quality in NZ.

Very very yummy but any old Cadburys will do me.

I have to say that the NZ Cadbury chocolate bars are the best tasting. Just so much more creamier than what we have here.

Can i just say i love those blackjacks! and fruit salads! ANd all those penny sweets. Sweets just don't taste the same out here. They all just taste of nothing imo. Anyone remember those 'eggs' you used to get for a penny each? They have tried to sell them over here and they just don't taste of anything! Chocolate defo doesn't taste the same, and nothing beats UK crisps (no walkers out here) . Beer doesn't taste the same:thumbsdown:
CHIPS from the chippy!! I have never been able to find a place over here that does chips like the chippy! Chips, mushy peas, gravy and a sausage! yummy!

Chip butties - Yummy:smiliedance:

No, bap is not aussie - in the UK there are so many words for these rolls.

Bread cakes, balm cakes, baps, bread rolls etc it depends which part of the country you come from.....us Yorkies say either baps or balm cakes depending on which part of Yorkshire we're from. Golly, I miss them.

We are returning to the UK next month and my DH and I have written a list of foods we are going to binge on in the first few weeks back.

The following list is extensive......but not exhaustive:

M&S Sticky Chilli Chicken
King Prawn Curry and Fried Rice from Local chinese
Maccas McChicken Sandwich (oz ones are yuk!)
Black Pudding
Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding with Horseradish Sauce
Jam Roly Poly and Custard
Walkers Crisps
Cadbury's Chocs
Quality Street
Pizza Express Pizzas........

Oh I could go on!And on...........!!!!:D

I also really miss Black Jack and Fruit Salad Chews........someone stop me!!!AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I bought a bar of Dairy Milk Bubbly the other day. It wasn't something that was available when I left the UK all those many moons ago so I hadn't tried it before. Glad I did though - it tasted just like that chocolate bar (which probably isn't available anymore) called Wispa.

I opened the bar determined to only eat one piece.

Hah!

Scoffed the lot within 5 minutes.

Oh god, don't get me started!

I miss walking into a chippy where the chips are ready, put into and open bag, lathered in salt AND vinegar, then back out into the open air to munch them down the high street.

I miss proper kebabs, you know? The ones in pitta breads full of finely chopped red cabbage, carrott onion etc.

Pickled onion monster munch, wotsits, quavers, hula hoops, twiglets a decent size bag of crisps!

Plain chocolate hob nobs, jaffa cakes, minstrals, revels. God the list is endless.

For anyone who lives in Melbourne, if they go to Sassafras theres a lolly shop there that sells a lot of english sweets. Just don't go on a budget;)

I just wanted to say that there is also a shop in Darling Harbour that sells english chocs/sweets and crisps it is called The British lolly shop. There is also a shop at Warringah Mall in Manly that sells sweets/chocs/ crisps etc from places like England and merica. I am not sure what this shop is called, i think it may be Sweet Things but dont quote me on that.:)

isnt it weird the way they call crisps chips over here and chips are hot chips!!! i cant get used to it!!!

On the Cadburys front, the best cadburys in whe world comes from the UK, no competition!!!

While im on this topic, the supermarkets over here are second class compared to the uk.
They are EXTREMELY limited in their supply. I was shocked when i first came here. The choice of food here is scandalous.
I was looking for the fresh food section for half an hour till i asked someone working in the store where it was and they pointed me in the direction of where i had passed numerous times before!!!
Hello, where are your fresh pasta, sauces, soups etc...
I miss Marks and Spencer. Even Sainsburys for gods sake...

I so agree about the supermarkets. We just moved back to Australia after 2 years in the UK and going to the supermarket here was the most depressing part of all. Its not just the ready-made food we miss (although that is sooo nice...) (especially Siansbury's peking duck...) but also just the variety of ingredients. Its not fair.....
And organic veges here are so weedy compared to over there.

Yep to the supermarkets. I miss Tescos where I could pop a few baby clothes or toys into the trolley with the weekly shop, or even the odd discounted t-shirt or something for me, as well as alcohol. Although my local Coles has just started doing a decent range of baby clothes, but quite limited at the moment. And YES - Cadbury's is the best from the UK. My sister sends me the odd fruit and nut bar every now and then.

I think they do still do starbars in england, a girl i worked with in england ate one everyday. Are they in an orangey wrapper and do they have nuts and caramel in them? I cant remember what else they have in them.

I miss prawn cocktail, beef and onion, nik naks oh an double deckers too. I am REALLY missing pot noodles too, i had a bad craving for them when i was pregnant and couldnt find anything like them. I wanted one so badly i even emailed Lever lol. But they said they dont do them here and have nothing similar to suggest :(
