View Full Version : what is over weight for a 5mth old
hey
I have a almost 5mth old baby girl. She was weighed the other day when we went to get her needles (as she was late in getting them due to bein sick) and she weighed five and a half kg. the doc told me that she thinks she is overweight!
I have her on solids she has brekki, lunch and dinner and a couple of bottles before sleeps during the day, She told me to take her solids off her and one of her bottles? Personally i dont think it is right taking food off a 5 mth old as she has a lot of growing to do and may grow out of her chubbyness..not that i mind, all i care about is that she is happy and healthy! What does everyone else think about takin food off a baby?
Just interested to find out the weight of other babies around her age and if people think she is over weight!
sorry to blab!
cheers
She is only 5.5kgs... did I read that right???
If so that is NOT overweight at all! Gosh some babies are BORN that weight!
Don't take her food or bottle off her, especially is she is happy and content. That lady needs her head checked!
sorry that was my mistake.. she is 7.5kg :p

My bub is nearly 5 months old and at his last weigh in was 6.4 kgs. There is so much variation in babies weights and sizes that I wouldn't be too worried. I honestly don't believe a baby can be overweight as once they get mobile they need all that energy to just get around and it is about this time that they will chub down so to speak. I don't have any experience with a FF babe but I don't see why it should be different from a BF babe.
My DS#1 weighed a whopping 8kg at 4 months! He is now the smallest boy in his class and just erring on the thin side. If you are still worried, try talking with a CHN, as they deal with babies every day and GP's only tend to see them when there is something wrong.:D

she is NOT over weight my son is 6 months on thurdays and he is 9kgs
he is a little over weight but dont take her off her food like my doc told me its better for them to have a litttle bit of meat caz if they get sick and are thin babies they will end up in hosp... a bigger baby is a healthy baby....
and i think thats around a nice weight for a 5 months old to be not fat but not thin...

at 4 months my dd was 6.18kg and 63cm long
at 6 months she was 7kg and 68.5cm long.
my dd is very tall for her age. each child is different. if you look in the health record book you got when your bub was born her weight should follow the curve ofthe graph. it shouldn't matter as long as she is healthy. on my chart it says for girls aged 5 months they should be between 6 and 7 kg. i really wouldn't worry about her weight at this age. as long as you are feeding her healthy foods (not much processed food or very sugary foods) i would continue to feed her what you have been.
if your dr insists that she is overweight i would tell him (or her) to stick it and go find yourself another dr.
I agree with the other bubhubbers... as my Jack was heavier than that at 5 months...
that weight only pts her in the 75th percentile (I just checked my red book) ... she is just above average that is all :D what a clever girl!!!
every baby is different anyway... I'd ignore that advice...
xx
thanks heaps for the advice. I wasnt so much worried about it,i am just interested to finding out the weight of babies around her age to see what others think.. nd i can now tell my gp that she has no idea as there are so many babies out there that are bigger then maddison. She has only just started rolling but she has been sitting for a while now, but the doc says she SHOULD be rolling but she isnt coz of her excess weight she is carrying! some gps just make you mad :banghead:
that is how i see it aswell that if they get sick it wont matter so much if they loose a bit of weight coz they have got it to fall back on! nd to be honest i think lil chubba bubba;s are cute hehe :D

While I think it is near stupid for anyone to class a baby as overweight (considering, especially in the first half of their first year, they get pretty much NO exercise to burn off ANYTHING they consume)...I think a lot of whether or not your child is "overweight" has to do with the size at which they were born.
My daughter was born 4.67kg, so, IMO, for her to be in the "average weight range" for other babies would mean that she'd have to be reasonably malnourished in order to lose weight and therefore no longer be her chubby little self, but a more "normal-sized" bub. Now, at nearly 10 months, she's about 11.5 kg...she has put on just as much weight as any other baby should, it's just that she started out heavier (eg. Say babies are meant to put on 6kg from birth-1. One that starts out at 2kg will only be 8kg by 1, but a bub who starts at 4kg will be 10kg at 1...etc etc).
If your daughter started out on the lighter side, then perhaps the reason concern in no so much her weight, but the amount of weight gain at birth.
Of course, I'm not expert, but just an idea...

A baby doesnt "need" solids until 6 months as their gut is not developed before then - causing a greater incidence of allergies in life. Breast milk or formula is adequate until then.
It's hard to say if she is overweight or not because it's also dependent on their length and all that, and what the percentiles have been from birth, and if they stayed on the same track
but the doc says she SHOULD be rolling but she isnt coz of her excess weight she is carrying!
Oh my GOD! That's a terrible thing to say! My bubs is a healthy 8.3kg and he was 5 months yesterday! When he was weighed at 4 months he was 8kg and my doc said that was in the 97% percentile and she was proud! She said he is thriving and keep doing what I'm doing! So please go to another Dr! I'm just shocked that they pass judgements like that at such an early age! I know kids are obese these days, but not BABIES! PULEASE! And remember also when they get sick they tend to lose it lightning fast!
I'm just shocked!
Oh and also he is rolling fine, no problems there!
yeah maybe they dont "need" it till 6 mths but if the milk just isnt doin it for them completely then why not give it a go? If they arnt ment to have it at this age then y bring it out for them to have?
Well lets just say she come out with rolls :p . She was 8lb 3oz 51cm she is now 7.5 kg and 67cm!!

If your doctor says its cool then go for it! I know the rice cereal comes out from 4 months and its fine - I'm just following the World Health organisations guidelines about waiting until 6 months. But in the end, you the mum and you still need to follow your own instincts about what's right for your baby. I certainly don't intent to start any drama ;) Oh, and I don't think you're baby is overweight - it sounds healthy to me.

hi , dont worry what they say!
my DD is 5 months old and she weighs 8kg's. she looks normal to me! and shes a fully breastfed kid and not on solids (although i have given her a try at it)
Once theyre more mobile crawling and walking they will even it all out. :)
sorry CHEEZELKAT i didnt mean to sound *****y, i was just wondering if they say that then y do they bring them out  she has the flavoured farex for brekki and loves nd she has a custard for lunch..those 2 are labled for 6mths but i tried her on them nd she loves em both. and for dinner she has a 4-6mth beef & pumpkin or some thing like that. She hasnt yet even screwed her nose up at any of them!! i donno i just had the feeling she was ready nd i thought y not try her if she likes it she likes it if she doesnt it doesnt matter. nd it worked out she loves it! :D

That's great
I don't want to come across as being *****y either but its so hard to say something on the net without it looking bad. So please don't think I was trying to be horrid or anything :D Some babies are ready for solids earlier than others, and it looks like yours might be
yeah na thats fine  i agree with you very much about the not bein able to say something over the net, coz u cant show expressions with the way you are saying it and it seems you are saying it a different way when you just read it, but its all good i understand what ya mean. :D Friends? :D

What a disgraceful Dr. How can a baby be overweight. I agree with what the others say and from my own experience with my DS I certainly wouldn't even think about what he/she said again Pffft:thumbsdown:
My ds weighed 4.95 kg at birth by 5 months was 9.2 kg if you go by the blue books graphs he was above the top quartile the whole way through he is also very tall for his age. So I just stopped worrying about that very early on.
He was a rolly polly chubba bubbu and it all fell into proportion when he was up and running around.
I started him on farex at 5 months as well as he was ready my dr and community nurse actually suggested it.
Just go with what you feel is right people and some professionals are just going to give you their opinions anyway no matter what regardless is it is really warranted.
Seriously when she is 21 is anyone going to care that she started solids a whole one month early or that she was 7KG - as long as she is healthy you are doing fine mummy. :yelclap:
Enjoy the rolls and chubby cheeks

I don't think that any paediatrician will even label a child as "overweight" until they are over 2 years old.
Your doctor sounds like she doesn't know what she talking about!
Your baby has a heap of growing left to do, and isn't walking or running or probably even crawling yet - so she isn't exercising as much as she will be. Most babies seem to slim down after they start moving cause they are burning all their fat off!
If you're worried, ask for a referral to a paediatrician - but I'm sure they would confirm what all the mums here have said!
BTW, DD was always between the 75th and 90th percentile of weight for age - so she must be fat too!

Change doctors! Get one you feel you have confidence in and one that will listen to you and won't label your baby but will diagnose on the baby's individual circumstances in mind. Perhaps post a thread in here asking for a recommendation on a doctor in your area. Other mums and their experiences will be able to advise you of a good one.
Good luck
My DS is 5 1/2 months and weighs 7.4kgs. My friends baby is 4 months & weighs 8kgs. You have nothing to worry about. You cant take away food from a hungry baby.

She definately isn't overweight. As long as her height and weight are on roughly the same percentile, she is fine. If her weight goes up and her height doesn't, then she would be classed as overweight.
Both my boys weighed 9kg at 5mths, they must be fat.

I don't believe babies can be 'overweight'.
My friends little guy was a HUGELY chubby baby... he looked like a rolly puppy!!
He is now tall and skinny (in year 1!)
my nephew is 7.5kgs and hes 4months - sure hes massive but just a healthy baby!! compared to his cousin, she is 6 months and half his size, but still healthy... I dont think many docs know what is "right" really.
with my pregnancy, ive had one doc tell me Im putting on too much weight, one tell me im average and not to worry, one tell me that I may have to have a ceasarean because my placenta is 'extremely low lying', and another tell me that theres nothing wrong with where my placenta is lying and that I wont need to worry about it.
just go with what you feel is right, if she looks healthy and not overweight, dont worry about it!!

No way is she over weight my bub was 7.5kg when she was 5mths. And she is not fat at all. As long as you can feel or see their ribs they aren't over weight. What a silly Doctor!!! Its funny theres such a big thing with people being fat now. Now its going to baby's being fat!!! Its ridiculous!

I actually did a BMI on my 8yr old a few months back (he is 43kg) and it came back saying that he is overweight. There is no way he is overweight!! Sure, 43kg might be heavy for your average 8yr old, but he is 4ft 9in tall.
Not sure what the point of this story it, but don't use BMI's to find out if your child is overweight or not. Use the height/weight comparison instead.

My little one was 4.2kg born and is now 7.8kg at 5 months, I don't take everything the MCHN say as gospel, like it or not, they don't know everything.
my bub is 8 1/2 kgs but he is really long for his age and the nurse said he is the right weight....it depends on their height what weight they should be around
Hi there!
My son is 7.2kgs at 4 mths and his cousin was 10kgs at 6 mths (would have been a good 8-9kgs at 4-5 mths). His cousin was off the chart (way above the 97th percentile) yet the Paediatrician did not comment on his weight at all and yet his was a big chubba:D My SIL did drop a bottle though and raced into solids. Her son naturally lost weight when he got mobile anyway, so there was really not a great need to panic. Our family (my DH's side in particular) just make big boys. There is also length etc to take into consideration. 7.5kg at 5 mths does not seem alarming to me. Girls are usually a bit smaller (my DD was a kilo smaller than my son at the same age) but that does not seem like you baby is too big at all.
I would have a look at your baby's position on the charts and have another chat to your doctor or see about a referral to a paediatrician for a second opinion if you are concerned about changing her eating patterns.

Some doctors are plain stupid.... My bubs is just over 4 months (71.5wks) and he weighs in at 7.8kgs... he is a tad bit chubby but he is also long ... so you must also take these things into consideration... and as someone others have said a chubby baby is a healthy thriving baby ....so dont worry waht the doc says....

Exactly!! Jacob was on the 103rd percentile, but he was there for height too so it didn't matter. He did have a small head for his size though, lmao.

my DS was 4.320 at birth and at 5 months was 9.5kg (97% from birth onwards until he was 2 1/4yrs old then he started stagnating at around 60%) and he now weighs 16kg and he by no means looks fat nor at anytime did the paediatrician ever comment that he was overweight - I always got god comments about how big and healthy he was.
I wouldn't worry too much as once bubs is up crawling/walking/running around it will level out and you'll then start worrying that they are not putting any weight on.

I wouldn't worry. My 5 1/2 month old DD weighs 8kgs (was 3.7kg at birth) and the CHN has no concerns - she's fine according to the growth charts in the purple book! DD is now on solids with b/fast, lunch, dinner and 4 bottles - if they're hungry, they're hungry, particularly if they're moving around and playing
