Hi, my name is Kylie,
My DS is 2 1/2. He has always spoken very clearly. In the last week he has begun to stutter. Just wondering if anyone else had experienced this?? Is so, any advice or suggestions. My MCHN said it may even pass by itself.
Hi there, my son has a stutter, and finally at age 5 3/4 he is starting speech therapy :D At age 2 1/2 he didn't speak much at all, but didn't have a definite stutter, just always had a hesitancy to his speech.
At this stage of things, I wouldn't worry too much if he has only been stuttering for the past week, it may be he is dealing with some kind of toddler stress that you are unaware of. If he is still stuttering in a couple of months then I would be requesting assessment by a speechie for sure, but until then try not to stress, and just observe if maybe he is stuttering because he is too much of a hurry to get it out or what.
Good luck, and will be checking back to see if you need to chat about it some more :hugs:

I used to stutter as a child and my mum used to tell me "stop, slow down" all the time which only made it worse.
I have since learnt that your supposed to let the child continue talking and not interrupt them, then when they are finished you paraphrase or repeat the sentence back to them so that it is clear.
I think your not suppose to draw attention to the stuttering as this only makes the child more self conscious (feel free to correct me if Im wrong:o )
I agree with the above post, at this stage I would just leave it and if its starts getting worse then seek out a good speech therapist.
Good luck:thumbsup:

Yep, definitely spot on :D Ashley has been fully stuttering for about 8 months now, prior to that it was more severe hesitancy in his speech, but because we don't make a big deal of it, he is not self conscious at all, nor does he get frustrated with himself, which is excellent. I am really proud of the little kids at his school too, because nobody has teased him yet, which is just awesome :yelclap:
But definitely try not to draw the child's attention to it, because then it WILL get worse as they become self conscious and frustrated. Just observe what factors may be in play causing the stutter, be it excitement, being upset, in too much of a hurry etc, and just be patient when he is speaking to you, he will get it all out eventually ;)

To Denise & Nemosmum,
Thank you both so much for your replies. They are much appreciated. I'm hoping that it is just some sort of developmental stage he is going through.
Thanks again
Kylie.
