View Full Version : Raspy Breathing?

Im hoping some one can help or set my mind at ease.
When my 7.5mth DD breathes through her mouth, it sounds really raspy. It kind of sounds like when a person has a lot of phlegm in their throat and breathes through their mouth, the phlegm kinda makes it hard for all the air to go in, if that makes sense?
Any way, at first I thought it was just the way she was breathing, but now ive noticed she does it every time she breathes through her mouth. I dont know if its anything to worry about or anything.
Its only been about the last week or two that she has been doing this. She doesnt do it through her nose, not that I can tell any way.

If some one could help that would be great. Thanks :)

Has she got a cold ?
My DS has a cold and his breathing is raspy too.
Maybe try sitting in the bathroom with shower on to make steam or use a vaporiser and see if that helps.
If in doubt prob best go get her checked out. :hugs:

Nope she doesnt seem to have a cold. No cough, no runny nose, no temp, she is just her normal self, just with raspy breathing.
I will try that, see how that goes. Thanks :)

Ill see if any one else has any other suggestions, in the mean time ill book her in to see doc JIC ill need the appt.

My DD does this sometimes too. My first thought was that she was weezing a little bit but after getting her checked by the Dr he said it was just normal breathing - she never had a temp or anything with it just the funny breathing (I think it might have just been a bit of a stage or breathing in dust or the cooler temp (as it was when we were in Melb - no sign of it in Darwin)

Soory not sure if I helped but I'd mention it to your doc next time you are in with him or her unless it worsens of course

asthma? is there any high pitched whistle?

put your ear to her chest and tell her to take big breathes and see if you can hear a whistle.

LOL okay just edited this because you cant tell her to take a breath at 7 months LOL.. just listen then.

My DS sort of has the same thing and has since birth, my pediatrician seems to think that it may be a sensitivity to cows milk or dairy, so i tried him on soy but he hates it!!
maybe see the doc if it keeps going.

Im seeing the MCHN soon so Ill bring it up with her. I dont think its in her lungs because I have listened on her chest and i cant hear anything abnormal, it all sounds like its coming from her throat.

I just worried that maybe its being blocked slightly by something or something. But DF said if that were the case then she would be upset and bothered by it, she isnt :)

hi my 5 1/2 mths old has the same thing and my doc has got us booked in to see a specialist as he said it sounds like her airway system hasnt fully formed at birth.he did say that most doctors will just monitor it till the child is 5 but in sever cases they will help it along.
dont want to scare you or anything, its just what i was told for my dd

Maybe she has large tonsils? When my brother was little he had really raspy breath as a bub and then when he was about 18 mths started snoring really loudly and it turned out he had huuuge tonsils and had to get them and his adnoids removed because he had sleep apnoea.

When you see the nurse get her to see how big DDs tonsils are, she will tell you if they're large and that may block her airway a bit when she's lying flat, making her breath raspy.

Good luck.

See the way I would describe the sound would be as if something were partially blocking her airway, which caused me to think maybe it wasnt fully developped or something.
I have made and appt for myself and my DD, so will get it checked out then.

Thanks for all your replies :)

If its a issue with the airway like its blocked like with laryngomalcia then the noise is only on inhalation not exhalation KWIM is that when the sound is when breathing in, or is it both DD had the horid sound on inhalation and it was die to laryngotraceomalacia and she requred to operations for it as it was also causing apnea, if its just the sound and she not getting any ill efects from it they generaly just leave it alone

The other thing that is really comon with little one is reactive airways

either way best to chat to the pead about it

hope its all ok

Hi,
I had a similar problem with my daughter just recently. She has really rattly breathing especially when she's active and had from birth. At first I thought it was a bit of mucous on her lungs and then maybe asthma. When it didn't start to clear up at all I took her to a paediatrician and as it turns out the rattle is called a "Stridal". She has been diagnosed with "laringo malacio". Which in english means she has a floppy epiglottis (the flap of skin the separates the windpipe from the oesophagus when eating and breathing is enlarged and causes the rattle in the breathing).
I hope I was able to help at all.
