View Full Version : Laporoscopy - advice please!?
another week down and the path to baby nos 1 changes again... My gyno who has moved interstate prescribed me provera and clomid which I am yet to start (hoping for a miracle). Friday I saw a new gyno who has re-iterated that I have a tinge of PCOS and to start the drugs but he has also recommended a laporoscopy first, just to see if there is any blockages etc - my question is how come the other gyno never brought it up - that's 6 months gone - taking temps and driving myself and dp mad and crossing fingers after each BD.
I would appreciate any advice from those of you who have had this surgery - good and bad!! I am a little scared re: going under a general anaesthetic - am curious about cost (not in private health fund) and I have also heard rumours that some women after having a lap have fallen pregnant soon after...
please - any advice anyone has would really be appreciated - want to do everything right - even if it is slightly terrifying.

I had a lap when i was ttc#1 and fell pregnant soon after i also had been to another gyno who had put me on clomid which i had taken for ages then she suggested a Feritlity specialist the first thing he did was a lap i was pregnant 2 cycles later, they say the combo of the dye being pushed through the tubes and the gas they use to blow everything up so they can get scope through with ease(or something to that effect) that leaves everything wide open for the eggies to get though etc, I had i blocked tube but the other was fine and went on to have two babies and am ttc#3 As for cost check with the hospital your due to go into they will give you a details account of monies due you may be out of pocket $800-$1500 depending on the hospital(after medical rebate.)Don't for get to apply for medicare saftey net because once you hit your out of pockets expenses thresehold you'll get all your balances back.I found the lap a breeze not a problem but SIL was off work for week from anaesthetic so it will be up to your body how you go but rest assured this is a good thing if they don't find anything great lets get pregnant if they do find something it not months wasted trying when you need a more specialized way to go. Good Luck i hope this helped:fingerscrossed:
Best advice I ever got from an anathesiest was to drink about 6-9 Gatorades after the surgery. It did wonders.
i had a lap about 7 years ago for endo, so it was a basic lap (not including tubes etc) day surgery. I had no problems with it, queasiness when i woke up and sore, like a bad AF. Rested for a few days and was fine, returned to work shortly after with no further complications.
I had private health but the cost was much the same about $800 after rebates etc.
I too am now TTC and thinking of having a full lap again to clear things up (a spring clean) I too have heard that it increased your chances of TTC (by about 40% according to Repromed website) so I'm willing to give it a go!!
Good luck :)

Hi there, I had a lap 2 months ago, it's not that scary. If you go in a public hospital it costs less - about $250 compared to $800, but it does depend on the ob/gyn who does it - which hospitals they work at.
My lap found severe damage to one tube and some scar tissue which they removed. I was sick the day of and day after, then sore for about a week. I had a follow up appointment a week later and they gave me photos of what they found
I am really glad I had the lap, even though it wasn't great news, at least now I know what I'm dealing with - a known entity is much better than what my imagination could probably come up with!
Hope this helps, good luck with whatever you end up doing! :hugs:
I had a laparoscopy after TTC for 12 months, I also had the fallopian tubes flushed out, nothing untoward was found but we conceived the following month! Dr feels that flushing the tubes probably was the reason because it stimulates the tiny hairs in the fallopian tubes.
Dr said I would need 2 days off work but I needed a week!

HI Lis
I think the fact that your first gyno didn't recommend a laproscopy would just be a difference of opinon to your current gyno, they all do things differently. I have a friend who's gyno was like your old one and waited till she'd done a few rounds of clomid before doing the lap, whereas my gyno sent me for one before clomid (after 12 mths of trying)
I went public and it didn't cost a cent. It was a very straightforward "operation", the general anaesthetic put me to sleep and I woke up just feeling a little sore. I think I was waiting for about an hour, was in surgery for an hour and was in recovery for 40 minutes.
They gave me panadine to take and I went home and felt a little groggy for the night but the next day I was fine. I think it was on a thursday and I went back to work on Monday. I'm not one of those wonderwomans either! I'm more of one of those lazy people
I have also heard of women falling preggers afterwards but alas alack it didn't happen to me. However it is very good to do the lap and find out if there is anything stopping you from falling so it can be fixed. Most gynos will fix it then and there when they find it rather than send you in for another lap.
Don't worry, it sounds like you have a good gyno. The laproscopy is easy to do, be greatful you don't have to do a hysterography too - that goes in through the bellybutton!
Good luck with the op and if you have ANY questions don't be afraid to ask your gyno.

I did a lap dye and something else throught the belly button about a year ago. I was completely put under and slept pretty much the whole afternoon and night. I left hospital the next morning, Friday, and was back to work on Tuesday. I did have pains in my shoulder but they gave me some good drugs for that. Of course the places where they put the stiches were a little sore also but nothing too serious. They said my shoulders were hurting because my body must have retained some of the gas they use and it must have gotten trapped up by my shoulders. Bizarre I know! Anyways, everything was clear which was really reassuring. They did find cervicitis which is inflamation of the cervix I think.. but the doctor said he took care of that and a cyst he found. Apparently I was all better after... but still TTC!
Good luck!
