This is more of a mummy related health question, and feel free not to answer if you think it is to personal:
just over a mth ago i had the contraceptive implant implanon insterted. Since then i have basically no sex drive what so ever... i know this can be a side effect but i was wondering if anyone else has had this, and if it went away?
:D

Hi MumofEthan,
I tried Implanon as birth control for about six months. I can't remember it affecting my sex drive at all, but I was in a new relationship at the time and we all know sex is always great at the beginning of a relationship!
However, after a few months I noticed I was starting to get very moody and would have quite bad mood swings. It was like I had permanent PMT. I persisted with the Implanon for a few more months, but things didn't improve, so I decided to have it removed. I am convinced it was the Implanon that made me like this, and I have had friends who've had the same thing happen, so just keep an eye on it.
Cheers
Hi Michelle,
I had a similar problem to yours, felt like my space was being invaded in an icky way if hubby "tried" anything. I really didn't want him close to me physically (I get the same sometimes just before a period). I remembered having a similar thing with the Depo Provera injections (don't ever be tempted, a lot of nasty side effects there!!!) but that was when I was younger and probably didn't have much of a sex drive yet anyway ;).
I would chat to the doc, it isn't much fun when something like that interferes with your hormones/emotions, would you prefer not to take an oral pill? I am on Norynil-1 (sp?) as it doesn't seem to affect my hormones or weight like all th others.
Hpe this helps!

unfortuantely the pill isnt really an option for me...
i am horrible at remembering to take tablets, dont like condoms, cant use depo (i bleed like crazy)...
the only other alternative to this is an IUD...
:(

Although not the same, after over ten years on the pilll...I had the injections about 4 years ago. Lost my sex drive, turned into a complete b!tch  and was generally not a nice person. I don't recommend it at all.
I hear of a lot of people turning their back on the implants and injections for these and other reasons.
In the end we went back to good old condoms- although it lacks the spontaneity we at least started having sex again ;)
Good luck with your decision-
Nicki
darn, that really sucks. But maybe the doc would be able to use a different formulation of Implanon, as oral pills are all different and affect us differently, I guess there could be options... hope so, but in the end, if your hormones are reacting to it and you keep it in (I didn't) then maybe you will emotionally adjust to the different feelings! Hope so :)

I had an implanon in for about 2 and a half years - and I didn't find it affected my sex-drive directly. I thought that it made me a bit more moody (yep, 2 years...) but moreso, the first 6 months my period went haywire! Spotting here and a bit of bleeding there. I think it was THAT which made me feel like my libido had gone down. Once that was over and done with, I didn't get a period at all (which was wonderful!)
Sometimes, you just have to stick it out - your body is probably still adapting...
Good luck with it :)

Hi I just thought I would reply because I was actually scheduled in to get the implanon but 3 friends had it and they all had different problems with it. One had lost sexdrive, one bled for the entire 3 years (and the only thing that stopped the bleeding was taking the pill at same time) and the other had it removed because of severe headaches. I opted for the mirena (IUD) and it was great for me.At first it was a bit odd (spotting) but then never had a period and could just forget it was there. The other thing I liked was the day u got it removed was when u would become fertile again.I know IUD's have had very bad things said about them but with the technology getting better and better I certainly suggest giving it a try.
i had the implanon for a year and for that year i was so so so moody and my period wasn't regular at all it was horrible and i also lost my sex drive. I also had to go on the pill at the same time and that just made it worse so i ot it taken out and i would never have it again.... i thought i would let u know
