Another thread got me thinking...then I was doing some research last night.I THINK my baby could have reflux.
He oftens pulls off breast while feeding, and will scream. Most nights he has really grumpy periods, where he can scream uncontrollably:crying:Sometimes I just give up trying to feed him and pop the dummy in.
After feeds he pretty much always spits up chunky kinda milk.He gets hiccups at least a few times a week.
BUT he is gaining weight really well, and is a great sleeper and in genereal a happy, placid baby.
It never occured to me before, but his crying has got me thinking...

I know you prolly wont like me replying, but I will anyway as I have had two with reflux.

Could be  Deacon was the same at his age. Afternoons were worse than mornings  Does he arch his back when he's having the uncontrolled times? It could be burning him. He has grown out of it in general, just every now and then he will have a flare up. Heritary from his mum

Have you changed anything in your diet?

What is he like sitting upright in a swing/bouncer during the unsettled times? Does the dummy usually keep him happy for a while?

Usually reflux milk thrown up isn't as chunky as it usually doesn't digest before they throw it up IYKWIM?

Another thought came to mind, what does his tongue look like? Deacon got thrush on his tongue around Graysons age.

Are you still seeing your middie? Might be worth giving her a call if you are still on the homevisits.

Hope it's not reflux and just a stage where he settles soon. Reflux is not a nice thing for bub's and mum's!

www.risa.com.au is a good site, a rep from the site also answers questions on this site :D

Thanks
Just had my last visit yesterday with my middie, but might email her...
Hes usually fine if he has dummy in,or is in his swing.
Its not thrush,he did have it a couple of weeks ago but it since cleared up with treatment.
Dont think its diet because I eat the same foods everyday.
I hope its not reflux:no:Just got paranoid after reading about it last night.

Hey chic,

Could very well be  . CJ gets it from time to time and has the exact same symtoms you described. The doc said it can be from feeding them laying down all the time if they co-sleep. The top part of the stomach doesnt learn to cut off the contents from flowing back up and reflux can develop. I also find certain foods I eat go through my boobie milk and do it too.

Reflux is something thats really easily fixed for most bubs.

I think a way to test whether it might be, is when he is crying, give him some Adult Mylanta but only 2mls. It should soothe the burn a little IF it is reflux. I tried this with my boys when they were newborns and it made a difference so then I knew I needed to get some stronger drugs like Ranitidine (Zantac).

Danni-:wave:The thing is he is great during the night.Lays down and has his feed then drifts off...

I dont want to give him drugs.Of course,I dont want him to be in pain but the thought of giving him drugs kinda scares me.

 Ditto...I have been told most reflux babies are fine at night....the bad time is first thing in the morns or afternoon. Also if it is really hot CJ's will play up.

Infant Gaviscon is good stuff. If he wont take if in a syringe, then you can put it in EBM for him. Just before a feed it ideal.

Trial and error is the only way to work out if he has if, it sucks that they dont have a test for it.

Its hard to say ...

Yes it could be reflux but it could also be wind.

Gaviscon be warned can cause issues with constipation & if it is wind it will aggravate it more.

Mylanta is great before feeds so you can give it to him say 30mins before a feed & then if it is reflux he should feed easier. It sadly wont help for extended periods & if he is cluster feeding etc then you cant keep using it iykwim.

Reflux is often caused by something in mums BM especially the likes of dairy & wheat so it may be worth a shot looking at your diet as being the culprit for him being upset especially if its only random.

The spewing doesnt seem an issue ? As in he isnt upset by it etc ? If not then I wouldnt worry because most babies spew due to their muscles being immature this is why it tends to stop after a few months.

If he is gulping lots, smelling acidic, his vomitting staining his or your clothing or upsetting him then I would seek medical help as you may need to try something like Zantac or the likes of Losec.

Make sure you keep him upright for at least 20mins after a feed & also try to feed him in the football hold more as he may find it more comfy. Also try to stop lots of cluster feeding as this may be him soothing the pain which in turn causes the reflux to worsen. Use the dummy as much as possible as the saliva helps neutralise the acid & try to keep his clothes loose fitting around his tummy.

Now if its a wind issue which is could well be then you can try a nice relaxing bath of an afternoon & massaging his tummy ... You can really push quite deep it wont hurt him but make sure you are right down towards his pubic bone cause this is where his bowel is. Throughout the day bicycle his legs & then of an afternoon bring his legs up bent beside his body this helps with pressure on the bowel & helps release any wind or gets it moving.

Again the wind/ tummy pain could be from something in your diet so its really worthwhile looking at that !

Good luck !
