Never had one  Dh is a qualified chemist. When we were unable to breastfeed DS DH looked into it all and did testing ( always testing lol) and found that just washing bottles, filling them with fresh boiled water and leaving them full was the most effective way of steralising our bottles (time, cost and health wise) As after a bottle is removed from the steriliser and exposed to air it is no longer sterilised. It was far easier for us to keep the bottles filled with water with the nipples face down in the water and water inside the nipple than to have a steriliser on the bench....

So I while I have a steriliser it was only ever used once and was really a waste of money

That is interesting. I have never heard that before. I might start doing that from now on

I use the avent microwave one, it was about $50 I think and came with 2 free bottles and a dummy. I did BF my twins though so didnt use it all the time, just when I occassionally expressed and for dummys, it was brilliant.

I have an ave3nt mricowave one ....

I washed them thoroughly, but it wasnt hard to chuck them in the microwave for a few minutes to be sure.

Next time around, I woulnt pay the $50 for a 'steriliser' I would just buy a plastic container (decor etc) with the little steaming grill thingy from woolies ..... they are exactly the same thing and MUCH cheaper.

I have to admit though - I often just filled with boiling water and left them. Then just gave a quick rinse with water from the (boiled) kettle before using.

I never used a steriliser product, instead we had a plug in electric steam steriliser which held six bottles at a time.

If I did use a steriliser product on toys etc, I would use Miltons.

I use the Tommee Tippee one. It fits 5 avent bottles in it. Half the price of the avent one.

I was given the Tommee Tippee microwave steriliser as a gift and it came with 2 bottles also.

With DS we used Milton for the entire time he had bottles.

With DD1 we bought an Avent electric one (on special). We used it for 4 months - by then she was rolling all over the floor and "eating" everything she came in contact with. Figured it was pretty much a waste of time after that.

With DD2 (8 weeks) we used the steriliser for about a month. We haven't used it since. As Missie said, recent research (aside from her DH) has shown that it really doesn't make any difference to sterilise. With both DDs the hospital told us we didn't need to sterilise as well.

We just wash and rinse in hot tap water and let the bottles air dry. We don't even fill them straight away, just put the lids on and leave them on the kitchen bench.

I use home brand sterilizing solution from Safeway. I used to use a microwave sterilizer until I burnt myself with hot water a couple of times then switched.

FYI my MCHN said that even though some studies have said that sterilizing is not needed she would not recommend it for bubs under 12 months in Melbourne. She said that with such low water levels there could be unknown contaminants in the water as we are getting down to the dregs of what's there. For that reason she also said you've still got to continue to use boiled water to fill the bottles.
