Hi everyone,

As part of my doula training I need to do a questionnaire about people's beliefs about childbirth. I would so appreciate it if you could help me out. Go into as much or as little detail as you want. There is no need to have experienced birth or even be a parent. It should only take about 5 mins. If you could include your age and cultural background that would be great. Thanks in advance!!

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you?

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not

Do most women enjoy childbirth?

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why

What is your opinion of homebirth?

The following list gives a variety of activities including childbirth. Place numbers next to each activity that shoes the danger level. Make number 1 the most dangerous:

 I thought I'd give some information, just for fun (trying to keep myself awake so I can watch late night poker... oh I'm a nerd)

I'm 23 and I'm an Aussie.. no real cultural background :)

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you?
Painful, Relieving, Emotional

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not
Absolutely! It's what we're designed to do, is it not?

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not
I don't think so. I mean the ins and outs are there, baby is in tum, comes out through vagina most of the time.. in theory it's quite easy - in practise I can imagine it's quite hard (and I don't handle pain well)

Do most women enjoy childbirth?
I don't know. It's not a question I've asked.

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why
In an environment that they are comfortable in - with some sort of 'expert' on hand - be in hospital midwife, homebirth midwife, ob or SOMEONE who can identify when there's a problem

What is your opinion of homebirth?
It's not for me. In fact I'm terrified of accidently having a home birth. The idea of an unassisted homebirth (ie: no medical staff what so ever) terrifies me even more - If there was a problem who is there to identify and help? :(

The following list gives a variety of activities including childbirth. Place numbers next to each activity that shoes the danger level. Make number 1 the most dangerous:

6 - Childbirth
3 - Driving a car
1 - Rock climbing
2 - Smoking cigarettes
4 - Surfing
5 - Sky diving

The following list gives different types of birth. Place a numbers next to each type of birth to indicate your opinion as to the best type of birth for a baby to be born. Make number 1 the best birth.

1 - Normal vaginal birth
2 - Forceps birth
4 - Ceaserean birth
3 - Vacuum birth

--- I would like to make a note that this is the best for me right now. I don't want a c-sect for personal reasons (scared of being awake while people cut me) however I don't think it's not the best, if you know what I mean. I think whichever way that the baby gets out with the best possible outcome to both mum and bubs is the "BEST" way. I admit, I don't really like how this question is worded.

The following list gives different professional people who are involved in childbirth. In your opinion which of these professionals is the expert in delivering a baby in a normal vaginal birth?

3 - GP
5 - Doula
2 - Obstetrician
1 - Midwife
4 - Nurse

Approximately how many births have you seen on the TV or in films?
A few

How many real births have you seen in real life?
None

If you have had a baby, how many have you had?
One on the way.

If you have had a baby, where were your children born?
WILL be in the hospital birthing suites.

Where or from whom did you learn about childbirth?
Google.

Hi there and good luck with your studies - I am 26, Australian with English grandparents.

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you?

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you?
Beautiful, Magical, euphoric (sp)
Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not
Yes, probably because I have had no complications, but for others this may be different
Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not
Yes and No...lol...First was very difficult because I was younger and did not educate myself about it, I fought the ctxs etc and I was in labour for 72 hrs, the dr's and midwives would do nothing to help me and I was stuck at 3cm until my waters broke on their own, at which point I went to 10 within 10 minutes (but of course they wouldn't listen or check until I said I can feel something down there!), for my 2nd, 3rd and 4th, yes it was easy, I knew what to expect and had also done all I could to prepare my body, was also allot more forceful in what I wanted and wouldn't be pushed around.

Do most women enjoy childbirth? No not most, but for me yes I love it and look forward to it

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why
For me a hospital, but if I wasn't high risk would ideally love to give birth at home
What is your opinion of homebirth?
I think it's great for those whom are not high risk

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you?

Tiring, Painfull, worth all the hardwork at the end!

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not

Yes i do. Women were meant to bear and birth children. And women have also been doing it forever!

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not
Yes and No... I had a good experience with my daughter and most of my labour was easy. (Untill they induced me and broke my forewaters.)
But it did get very painfull towards the middle and end of my labour, and then i had an emergency caesarean and the recovery was a little difficult at times. But I'd do it again!

Do most women enjoy childbirth? No, some women don't enjoy it at all. I would do it all again though, so i guess you could say that i did enjoy it in some ways...

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why
For me a hospital, because it's the safest place possible. If anything were to go wrong there, then I would be in good hands.

What is your opinion of homebirth?
I think it's great for those who have the upmost confidence that nothing would go wrong. For me I'm too worried that something would go wrong.

The following list gives a variety of activities including childbirth. Place numbers next to each activity that shoes the danger level. Make number 1 the most dangerous:

Childbirth 6

Normal vaginal birth 1
Forceps birth 2
Ceaserean birth 4
Vacuum birth 3

That is a hard question, I think that a vaginal birth would definately be the best and safest way to have a baby in most cercumstances though, something usually happens to change that, and in those cases, something needs to be done and the forceps, vacuum and caesarean are safer options but change constantly depending on the problems that arise.

The following list gives different professional people who are involved in childbirth. In your opinion which of these professionals is the expert in delivering a baby in a normal vaginal birth?

If you have had a baby, where were your children born?

Painful, Emotional, Beautiful

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not
Yes, Women have been doing it forever, and todays technology makes it even safer.

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not
No, the emotion, pain, lows and highs take your body on a roller coaster ride. No one can quite explain it.

Do most women enjoy childbirth?
I don't think so, but in the end you totally forget the pain you went through (thats why we go back time and time again) lol

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why
For me it is a hospital where all the professionals are so as if something were to go wrong they have everything on hand and can go about fixing it asap.

What is your opinion of homebirth?
It's not really for me I would rather be in the hospital, but for some it is great as long as they have trained professional at hand who can identify any problems that may arise.

Hi Kylie

Well, since you've contributed to my book and I think your work to become a doula is really great, here's my answers...

I'm 26, have a gorgeous son and another on the way... I'm blessed. I was born in the UK, have a very English background, but have been in Oz most of my life.

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you?
Empowering, relieving, hopeful... I had a caeser last time and am hoping for a VBAC.

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not
Now that I've had one baby through surgery and done a lot of research, I think child birth is far safer than our society makes out. Although medical advances have saved many mums and bubs, for the most part, child birth is what our bodies were made to do and it's sad when we're robbed of that beautiful experience.

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not
I'm not sure - I haven't really been through it. However, I do think that in today's western culture, it's probably a lot more difficult than it has to be.

Do most women enjoy childbirth?
I think many women do, but many women also feel that they weren't in control of their experience. My friend recently had a really awful labour, which ended in an emergency c-section and it's something she feels she'll never get over. It's certainly put a dampener on further birth experiences.

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why
I think this totally depends on the woman. I admire those women who choose homebirth, however I don't think it's for me. I like being in hospital - call me strange - and being pampered for at least a few days following. I guess if the right atmosphere is created and support offered during and following birth, then home would be remarkable.

What is your opinion of homebirth?
Think I' pretty much covered that above!

The following list gives a variety of activities including childbirth. Place numbers next to each activity that shoes the danger level. Make number 1 the most dangerous:

The following list gives different professional people who are involved in childbirth. In your opinion which of these professionals is the expert in delivering a baby in a normal vaginal birth?

Obstetrician 3
Midwife 1

Approximately how many births have you seen on the TV or in films?
Not entirely sure - probably about ten to twenty.

How many real births have you seen in real life?
Only my own... c-section.

If you have had a baby, how many have you had?
One.

If you have had a baby, where were your children born?
In a private maternity hospital.

Where or from whom did you learn about childbirth?
Antenatal classes and personal reading.

I'm Steph, Im 19 and Mostly Australian but with a part Asian (Chinese)

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you?

Beautiful, EMotional, Fast

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not

Yes. If women could give birth thousands of years ago without the presence of trained professionals, it's only even safer now.

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not

I wouldn't say its easy emotionally or mentally but for me, physically, it was over so quickly that it didn't feel hard.

Do most women enjoy childbirth?

I think most women enoy what childbirth brings to them, maybe not so much the the pushing or c-sect.

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why

Where ever they feel comfortable. If that be at home, then as long as they have the help, and equipment needed, it's safe.

What is your opinion of homebirth?

I have nothing against it. If a woman feel most comfortable giving birth at home then thats what she should do. Although personally I couldn't do it.

Im 30, Australian breed but have Chinese influences (parents)

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you?

Painful, Emotional, Relieving

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not

Yes - women were designed to be the bearer of children and if people thousands of years ago could do it without pain relief and without modern day medicine and knowledge it is definately safer now than before.

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not

I wouldn't say it is easy (it may be for some) but it is easier giving birth than raising a child!! :p

Do most women enjoy childbirth?

The end result is the main feature and the mother's amnesia to childbirth is the best gift later on :)

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why

The best place to give birth is where ever the woman feels the most comfortable

What is your opinion of homebirth?

Up to the individual. Some people prefer it, others don't. Where ever you feel the best is the best place to give birth. Some women don't have a choice and the baby arrives before the mother can get to a hospital!
However if there are complications during the labor and there is no help around then it can get complicated and dangerous for both mother and baby.

Hi I'm also studying to become a doula and I'm up to my second module and I was thinking that if you lived near me, we could have study sessions or even go out and train toghether. If you dont live near me it would also be good to go online and discuss what we have learnt. I'm on the Gold Coast by the way. and I'm also doing mine through optimumbirth.

Amazing, empwering, surreal

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not

Yes, our bodies are designed to give birth

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not

I found it easy, I just trusted my body and went with the flow.

Do most women enjoy childbirth?

Probably not, but I did.

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why

At home, where you are not expected to produce a baby according to somebody elses schedule, where one intervention will not be followed by another and another, where you can have a sense of control, where people will not disrect you by invading your privacy and space, where you can go into your own "zone"

What is your opinion of homebirth?

The most satisfying thing I have ever done.

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you? Empowering, miraculous, satisfying

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not - In most instances absolutely. Why - because this is what our bodies are designed to do. Having grown up on a farm, I've never seen a cow, goat or sheep drop dead from birthing and by and large there is no intervention. I'm obviously not comparing human beings to farm animals but we are animals!

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not. Easy - now there's a word I've never associated with childbirth but I guess it is yes. My body instinctively knew what to do.

Do most women enjoy childbirth? I would say not - fear is powerful.

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why. Home. Because we've medicalised the process and there's no need for it. Women birthing in the comfort of their own homes surrounded by supporting, loving individuals is more conducive to birth without intervention, intact perenium's, and less instance of CS. There are obviously exceptions to this rule but in the main, yes home is safer. A lot of nordic countries subsidise home MW's and women never go to a hospital for birthing. It's a cultural and educative issue.

What is your opinion of homebirth? Love it - if I had another that's where it would be!

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you?

sweat, blood and tears

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not

Nope - didn't lots of women regularly die in/after childbirth in the 18th and 19th centuries?

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not

Don't know, I think there was too much intervention at my baby's birth. Perhaps if I'd not been induced things would have worked out differently.

Do most women enjoy childbirth?

I don't think so.

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why

I have heard that it is statistically at home, but honestly, I want to be near drugs.

I would love to work up the courage to give it a go.

Age and cultural background

I'm 31, born a boring caucasion Aussie...but have travelled loads and have a weird, wonderful and colourful patchwork of a background which has made me a real odd-bod culturally....

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you?

Sacred, Priviledge, Miracle

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not

Yes. Thousands (or millions?) of years of childbirth, billions and billions and billions of humans and animals exist because of childbirth - so it cant be that dangerous can it? If it were dangerous, there wouldnt be many of us walking the planet, surely?

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not

Potentially, Yes. When the environment and support people are conducive to it (from my experience).

Do most women enjoy childbirth?

Taking into consideration the planet's entire population of women, I believe the answer would be a resounding Yes. It is only in the west, where the myth of childbirth being dangerous is perpetuated, that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, and women, especially in english speaking countries, dont look forward to birth, and consequently do not enjoy it.

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why

Anywhere that the birthing woman feels 100% secure and comfortable.

What is your opinion of homebirth?

Very excited to be going for a homebirth in around 5 weeks time!

The following list gives a variety of activities including childbirth. Place numbers next to each activity that shoes the danger level. Make number 1 the most dangerous:

6 Childbirth
4 Driving a car
2 Rock climbing
1 Smoking cigarettes
5 Surfing
3 Sky diving

The following list gives different types of birth. Place a numbers next to each type of birth to indicate your opinion as to the best type of birth for a baby to be born. Make number 1 the best birth.

1 Normal vaginal birth
Forceps birth
4 Ceaserean birth
Vacuum birth

To be honest, I feel a little nervous rating forceps/vacuum, since I havent experienced these, so would have no idea the aftermath/recovery from such procedures.

The following list gives different professional people who are involved in childbirth. In your opinion which of these professionals is the expert in delivering a baby in a normal vaginal birth?

GP
Doula
Obstetrician
Midwife
Nurse

Midwife (as opposed to a medwife) and Doula. In both these cases, when choosing a midwife and/or a doula, I would look firstly for one which has given birth before, and has a healthy positive attitude to these births - and the more times the better. On top of that, moreso in the case of a midwife, I would want for her to have a good track record with natural delivery. She would have to believe that women's bodies arent lemons ;)

I beleive in truly rare pathological cases, an OB may become necessary, but for normal births, OB's should stick their noses out of them!

Approximately how many births have you seen on the TV or in films?

totally lost count! thousands?

How many real births have you seen in real life?

Only 3, I suppose - my own

If you have had a baby, how many have you had?

3 so far

If you have had a baby, where were your children born?

#1 hospital, Kent, UK

#2 hospital, Croydon, Surrey, UK

#3 hospital, Hornsby, NSW, Australia

Where or from whom did you learn about childbirth?

The first book I read, before baby #1 was Dr Miriam Stoppard's "New Pregnancy & Birth Book". I read absolutely nothing before baby #2, and before baby #3 I read Grantley **** Read, Ina May Gaskin, Michel Odent, Sheila Kitzinger.

This time round I have re-read my Ina May Gaskin books, I have read 'Birthing from Within', 'Active Birth' by Janet Balaskas, and millions of birth stories - mostly VBAC/VBA2/3/etc/C stories.

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you?
Natural, amazing, life

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not
Essentially, yes. Yes I do. I think it is far safer now than even 20 or so years ago & certainly safer than it was hundreds of years ago. Not just because of medical intervention (although I think this can & does have a huge impact on making modern childbirth safer), but also due to the sheer volume of information we all have access to nowadays.

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not
mmmmmm...... no, not really! I had a planned c/section, so mine was relatively easy I guess in that I never went into labour, but recovery was difficult for a while there.

Do most women enjoy childbirth?
In all honesty in my experience, I'd have to say yes.

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why
Wherever the woman feels comfortable. Whether that be in the home, a birth centre, in a hospital, out in nature somewhere - wherever. For me, it was hospital (whether I'd have needed a c/s or not)

What is your opinion of homebirth?
I think it's a great option for those who feel most comfortable giving birth at home. These days I think it can be quite safe. It's not something I would seriously consider, but that is only because I would feel more comfortable giving birth in a hospital (adds to the experience for me!)

The following list gives a variety of activities including childbirth. Place numbers next to each activity that shoes the danger level. Make number 1 the most dangerous:

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you?
difficult, painful, scary

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not
I do believe that childbirth is generally safe...because that is what the female body is designed to do! Of course there are complications which can make it UNSAFE, but generally speaking, I think it is reasonably safe.

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not
I've never given birth (I had to have a caesarean), but I don't imagine it to be easy. Having a caesarean is by no means easy either...though so many people seem to think it's the "easy-way-out". While the delivery of a child through a c-section is generally easier and more painfree, the recovery, IMO, is generally more difficult.

Do most women enjoy childbirth?
I think they both do, and don't. Generally, I'm sure they enjoy the outcome of giving birth - having a baby! But I doubt that many people actual ENJOY the pain of labour. Still, I REALLY WANT to have a vaginal birth...so at least I LOOK FORWARD to it, and I'm sure I'll enjoy the EXPERIENCE at least...

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why
In a hospital. While I think it's lovely that so many people want to give birth at home, I would not find it comfortable for me. Hospitals, generally, have access to different methods of birthing and can intervene if necessary.

What is your opinion of homebirth?
I think it's a nice idea for those who want to try it...but I wouldn't find it comfortable. I also think it leaves room for little complication/error.

The following list gives a variety of activities including childbirth. Place numbers next to each activity that shoes the danger level. Make number 1 the most dangerous:

6 Childbirth
4 Driving a car
2 Rock climbing
1 Smoking cigarettes
3 Surfing
5 Sky diving

The following list gives different types of birth. Place a numbers next to each type of birth to indicate your opinion as to the best type of birth for a baby to be born. Make number 1 the best birth.

1 Normal vaginal birth
3 Forceps birth
2 Ceaserean birth
3 Vacuum birth
(I think that Forceps and Vacuum are equally dangerous)

The following list gives different professional people who are involved in childbirth. In your opinion which of these professionals is the expert in delivering a baby in a normal vaginal birth?

5 GP
3 Doula
2 Obstetrician
1 Midwife
4 Nurse

Approximately how many births have you seen on the TV or in films?
Countless! Though I get quite annoyed when none of them every seem realistic...they're all just the same as each other (sudden onset of labour, quick rush to hospital, panting on bed with legs in strippups...).

How many real births have you seen in real life?
NONE! I think I would be a little terrified to see a birth.

If you have had a baby, how many have you had?
Just 1, via a "Elective" Caesarean Section (It was not REALLY elective...I hate that word. I was INSTRUCTED to have one because my baby was 2 weeks late. I believe it was a precautionary measure, not something that was actually necessary).

If you have had a baby, where were your children born?
In hospital in Queensland

Where or from whom did you learn about childbirth?
I learnt about childbirth from a number of sources. From others who had experienced it themselves, from books, from television programs, from ante natal classes, from healthcare professionals.

When you think of childbirth which 3 words describes it for you?
Believe, Breathe, Exhaustion

Do you believe childbirth is safe?
Yes, I believe it is safe, especially if you compare it to early last century. We have more knowledge, and knowledge means power.

Do you think childbirth is easy?
No way! Childbirth tests your strength - not only your body but your mind. It pushes you to the limits and back again.

Do most women enjoy childbirth?
I don't think it's the actual labour they enjoy, but the result at the end - the CHILDS-BIRTH.

In your opinion where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why?
It really depends on where they live. Giving birth at home would be ideal, but only if access to a hospital is available. Being in familiar surroundings would make the labour 'easier'.
However, I felt more at ease during the latter stages of my labour at the hospital.

What is your opinion of a homebirth?
I think it would be wonderful. I think there are alot of women wanting to have a home birth, but with not many midwives/doulas/dr's to assist they are put off. I'd never heard of a doula until 2 yrs ago, and insurance wise midwives/dr's don't want the risk of something going wrong at a home birth.
In an ideal world we would all have home births, only going to the hospital if assistance was needed.

The following list gives a variety of activities including childbirth. Place numbers next to each activity that shoes the danger level. Make number 1 the most dangerous:

5 GP
3 Doula
2 Obstetrician

Approximately how many births have you seen on the TV or in films?
Heaps - there's the 'real' birth ones you see on documentaries and info videos at prenatal classes, and then there's the 'not so real' births you see on films (quite hilarious to watch!).

How many real births have you seen in real life?
None, I've never had the opportunity, but if I did I would jump at the chance!

If you have had a baby, how many have you had?
2, 1st vaginal birth, gas and pethadine 6hrs.
2nd vaginal birth, gas, episiotomy, vacuum extracted, 8hrs

If you have had a baby, where were your children born?
1st - Country hospital in SA, 2nd - RPA in Sydney, NSW

Where or from whom did you learn about childbirth?
As a child I went to LifeEd which taught you all about the birds and the bees. As an adult I read books, prenatal classes also.

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you?

Miraculous, Primal, Lifechanging!

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not

Usually, but there can be dangerous and unexpected complications which is why I would always choose to have trained medical proffessionals there in case.

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not

Absolutley not! But it's amazing what your body is capable of.

Do most women enjoy childbirth?

Not when it's happening, but afterwards I thought it was amazing and I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why

It's whatever each women feels comfortable with, but for me it was in a hospital with an OB there in case. But after having such a text book birth I know i could have done it with just the midwifes, but I would still want to have an OB incase anything went wrong.

Hi I am Danielle, I am 19 and I don’t have any cultural background (just an Aussie girl!!) I gave birth to my daughter Oct of last year (aged 18) and I am preggie with second bub due in Nov.

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you?
Amazing, Painful, Worth-it

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not
I think that giving birth is just as safe as any other activity you may undertake, every thing has risks but we are educated enough and have high standards. Plus the people trained to help you know what’s going on!

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not
Easy?? Well it just happens, it’s not like you need to learn how to do it. I didn’t find it a particularly hard thing so to speak, your body is designed for it.

Do most women enjoy childbirth?
I don’t think I have ever asked that, for me I found it an enjoyable process, it was a nice bit of closure for nine months worth of work (I don’t know how I would of felt had I not had a natural VB. I don’t think it would have been less of an experience but it may have effected the enjoyment)

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why
Somewhere where she is comfortable made to feel good about the experience and there are trained people to h help her through the experience as well as her support team.

What is your opinion of homebirth?
I think it’s a great idea, with bub we tried to stay home as long as possible cos its where I felt most comfy. As soon as I got to hospital contractions stopped!! I don’t think that I could have my bub at home though; I think I need the reassurance that extreme medical help is next door if bub needs it. Perhaps if I had more of an understanding of it, I also think it would be harder to organize where as hospital you just have to fill in the forms, all the people are their already.

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you? Beautiful, amazing, empowering

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not. Yes. It is a bodily function designed to perpetuate the human species. If it was unsafe, our species would have dwindled.

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not. Childbirth is easy in that our bodies know what to do. We don't need to do much but sit back and do what our instincts direct us to do. But it is hard in that it takes effort.

Do most women enjoy childbirth? I don't know - I am not most women. But yes, I enjoy childbirth.

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why. The best place is where the woman feels safe. Unfortunately, a lot of people are misguided as to the safest place - they may feel safe but be making unsafe choices. I feel that the safest place is at home away from unnecessary medical intervention.

What is your opinion of homebirth? Natural, normal and perfectly safe.

Pain, drugs, ecstasy!

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not- Yes and no, depends if everything is going well during labour and pregnancy, more a yes answer than no!

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not-Yes, if you get an epidural in time, no if you are too late or problems arise.

Do most women enjoy childbirth? Not during labour, but as soon as bub arrives, yes Totally!

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why-Hospital with an epidural, safest place for bub and mum.

What is your opinion of homebirth? No, for me. To me hospital is safest.

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you?
empowering, amazing, lifechanging

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not
Yes, absolutely - leave nature to do it's job and problems are rare
(and if problems do occur we have trained professionals to help)

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not
No, I don't think it is easy - I think it is incredibly intense, hard-work and painful. But I do believe it is manageable - the pain is not constant and if you are prepared then you CAN do it. And the rewards...well they are indescribably magnificent!

Do most women enjoy childbirth?
Depends on the woman, their beliefs and expectations, how prepared they are and how much they surrender their experience to their caregivers. I know I enjoyed every minute of both of my births, but I know their are plenty of mums who did not.

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why
Wherever they feel most comfortable and safe.
(I should add though that if women are looking for an intervention free birth then at home is probably the best place to be - unless you are FULLY prepared and informed and ready to be assertive)

What is your opinion of homebirth?
Superb idea - should be an option for all women if they want it.
(And, if you could also get a live-in chef and babysitter for 5 days after the birth, that would make it PERRRFECT!)

The following list gives a variety of activities including childbirth. Place numbers next to each activity that shows the danger level. Make number 1 the most dangerous:

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you?
Miracle,emotional, pain

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not
Yes- Millions of women have given birth and millions will do it again. The feamle body is designed to carry children and to give birth.

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not
Definanlty not!!! Having not experianced child birth before I cant say for sure how easy it will be for me..... but I would never say that it is easy. You have no control over the situation leaving you at the complete mercy of your midwife or Dr. The physical pain that women endure during child birth is one thing but your not just giving birth your giving birth to the miracle YOU created and that in itself would be hugely emotional!!

Do most women enjoy childbirth?
i suppose it depends alot on you Dr, midwife and support people. Its the people around you who make or break the situation- I believe that if you dont have good support during labour and birth you wont enjoy the experiance like you could.

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth? Why- Probably at the hospital simply because should the need arrise that emergancy medical intervention is required the medical staff is there to assist. but Im all for natural active births with no drugs and no medical intervention

What is your opinion of homebirth?
If I had the money I would probably try for a home birth after seeing how I go with having my first child. I believe that if you are coumfertable you during labour and birth- you will enjoy it far more than what you would in unfamiliar suroundings so being at home would be coumferting.

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you?
love, woman, strength

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not
For the most part yes, it is a natural process that we are created for, however like anything there are always risks, nature has no guarantees

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not
It can be, in the sense that in most cases, the body does all the work and directs you in what to do, althought there are a lot of people whoo have challenging births. For me, apart from being overdue and induced the laboring process (although painful) wasn't hard, I listened to my body and obeyed it, the first time I think I have ever truly felt my "instincts" kick in. But it's no walk in the park.

Do most women enjoy childbirth?
I dont think so. I think we talk about childbirth in all it's goriness and pain alot more than previous generations, which to me can mean we have more to be scared of. The fact that so many people now opt for elective c sections and epidural/spinalblock, tells me that people will avoid the natural scenario at all costs. I personally did enjoy the birth of my first, it was a strengthening experience which made me LOVE being a woman, what a tremendous power to have, the power to give birth.

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth?
I like the thought of home birthing, but I still feel that we have the option now days to provide every type of response to emergency, that I choose A Birthing centre

What is your opinion of homebirth?
I like the idea, but I do find great comfort in knowing that I have all the medical support I or baby should need at arms length. If I were to lose my baby, because we were too far from hospital care, I would never forgive myself. So many women lost babies, and their own lives in previous generations through not delivering in hospitals, so I can't really understand why you would want to put either of you at risk , when there is simply no need.

When you think about childbirth which 3 words describes it for you?
painful! natural, powerful

Do you think childbirth is safe? Why or why not
In this day and age, yes. I felt very confident with the care I had during the labour. I was lucky that I didn't have to have an emergency C-section, but it was close. I would not feel safe having a home birth as I would be nervous about needing medical intervention and not being able to get it in time.

Do you think childbirth is easy? Why or why not
No, I am so glad that I had a support person to help me through it. For me, it wasn't easy because I was expecting something different. I was ready for the pain, but I was not expecting the exhaustion and the feeling of wanting to faint - I didn't know how to deal with that very well.

Do most women enjoy childbirth?
I don't think so - I didn't enjoy it, but I felt proud of what I had accomplised afterwards. I enjoyed the excitement of realising it was time to meet my baby!

In your opinion, where is the best place for a woman to give birth?
Personally, I would choose a hospital - I would feel safer knowing that all the necessary staff and equipment are close by in case of an emergency.

What is your opinion of homebirth?
I think it's great that we have so many options these days, but personally, I would not choose this option for reasons stated in the previous answer.

A hard question to answer as it depends on many things - how experienced you are at the activities such as surfing, sky diving etc and for the childbirth - how your pregnancy has been, how the baby is positioned, where you have the baby, how old you are, how healthy you are etc. I don't think its as clear cut as the question suggests.
