View Full Version : Was your pregnancy like your mother's?
I'm pretty new here, but have been lurking for a couple of months. At the moment my partner and I are in the early stages of TTC #1. I'm not sure this is the forum for this, but what the heck?!
I was wondering if anybody has compared pregnancy and/or birth stories with their mothers? Did both you and your mother find getting pregnant easy or difficult? Did you have similar side effects? Morning sickness? Stretch marks? Weight gain? Also with respect to the birth?
It would be great if I could have some idea of what to expect!

Hi!
Mum and I are both similar and different if that makes sense? We both fall pregnant easily, have terrible morning sickness, and have good pregnancies aside from the morning sickness, and have long labours. Other than that we are very different.
She went overdue with all 4 of us, I went 3 weeks early with my first.
She had great natural deliveries (aside from one birth with forceps), whereas I had a shocking long labour that ended in an emergency caesar.
She packed on weight with all 4 of us and had trouble losing it afterwards, but the weight just dropped off me! I carry all out in front and barely put weight on elsewhere, but she blows up like a beached whale!
As for stretch marks, she has many (and always has since she had us) but I have none. (thanks to Palmers Stretch mark lotion!)
Good luck with TTC - I hope it happens soon for you!
Mum fell pregnant first cycle every time (3 pregnancies), it took me almost 2 yrs to concieve #1 no family history of any ttc problems.
I had severe morning sickness, mum never had it, not even when pregnant with twins.
I had Placenta previa and needed a c/s, I am the first person in my family (incl mum/aunts/uncles/second cousins!) to EVER have a c/s.
I didn't get post natal depression, my mother had it BAD.
I got a few stretch marks, most of them were because of the c/s, mum got none, not even with the twins.
mum's boobs didn't get bigger at all for breastfeeding! She was a C cup before, during and after! I was A before, C when the milk came in and B now!
She fell pregnant with my brothers when I was 18 months old...;)
we both were skinny before pregnancy and just as skinny 1 month after birth :o

I haven't really discussed this with my mum, but I do know that there are a few similarities between her, and my sisters and I.
We all get pregnant easy, all have biggish babies and go overdue......my mum had twins and went 4 days overdue!!!! And they weighed in at 7 & 8lb!!!!!
She has 14 grandkids, and they have all been biggish, and only one has been born naturally before the due date (but only by 1 day, LOL)

My mum and I both didnt show hardley at all with our pregnancies but that was about the extent of being similar we got unfortunatley - i would have liked to be more like my mum. I had SEVERE morning sickness, she had none, She had short labours and i had a 36 hour one lol
We both however got pregnant really easy!!
Goodluck in trying to concieve!

Hi!
DIFFERENCES
- My mum was terribly ill with both of us, with morning sickness that lasted all day and all 9 months. She had to be hospitalised with both of us towards the end as she was so dehydrated. I was so worried I would be the same! But... I had a fantastic pregnancy, with only a little nausea at the start and only actually being sick on 2 occasions. Thank god!
- I have pretty bad stretch marks whereas mum has none
SIMILARITIES
- We both fall preggas pretty easy (well, at least I did with #1 - who knows with future bubbies!)
- We both have short labours (mine was just 3.5 hours!)
- We both got our periods back when bub was 8 weeks old
- Both my lil brother and my son are allergic to cow's milk and have reflux
- We both lost our baby weight pretty easy
Good luck! :fingerscrossed:
Thanks for all the replies. I was really hoping that I could use my mother's pregnancies as some kind of guide, but it looks like I'm just going to have to wait and see. (Need to get up the duff first, of course!) My mother got pregnant *really* easy, had no morning sickness, no stretch marks, and actually found she had lost weight during the pregnancy! She also had pretty easy births (are they ever easy?) with no contraction pain with my brother. However, the fact that she was a smoker way back then may have made a difference.
My mum had 7 kids, so im guessing we might have had something in common somewhere along the track!
im not quite sure what kinda pregnancies shes had, must ask her. was such a long time ago for her!
My mum and I had very similar pregnancies, both had bad morning sickness which disappeared around the 14 week mark, we both went into labour two weeks early - both of our waters broke before we went into labour and we both had fairly short and intense labours.
She ended up having an emergency c section as I was undiagnosed breech whereas I had a natural (with the help of the vacuum) birth. She also lost all her baby weight straight afterwards and I didn't (and she always likes to remind me of that  ).
We both also had bf issues and while she gave up bf after a week, I managed for 6 weeks before having to stop.
She also only had one baby and I plan to have many :D

Mum and have been alot different. She didnt show much at all, actually by the time i was 26 weeks i was bigger than she ever got full term.
All of us were small babies and between 10days and 3 weeks early, so it ill see how i go for similarlities in the next couple of weeks.

Nope.
But that doesnt suprise me I take after my dad's family so I probably had a similar experience to my paternal grandma.
My older sis had a similar one to my mum though.......No morning sickness, moderate weight gain, easy pregnancy but a hard labour.
Mine was more.......Loads of Morning sickness, big weight gain, swelling and back ache but an easy birth:D

My mum and I both had Pre Term Labour consequently both losing 2 babies each, she also had the misfortune of them leaving behind part of the placenta after a D&C same as me and following births of heathy babies both of us having to have blood transfusions for blood loss. My aunty always says as I am my mums only daughter ..the apple didnt fall far.

my mum and my pregnancies were nothing alike other than at the end of the day we had a baby.
mum fell preggers 6 times at the drop of a hat
I took 4 years and had a sucessful IVF pregnancy
mums were all natural deliveries
mine was an emergency c-section
mum had morning sickness and vomited for 9 months with the 6 pregnancies
I had morning sickness the first 3 months but mostly only dry retching vomiting twice
mums deliveries with 2 of my sisters were nightmares ie cord wrapped around neck, my sister died twice and the other was born a blue baby and they had to do a blood transfusion on her and change her blood over (something like that I'd have to talk to mum again to get the facts straight)
my DS was born with no complications once the c-section was underway he had an apgar of 9/10
mum put on heaps of weight and found it hard to loose because she had 6 babies in 6 years so she didn't lose the weight completely until after she stopped having babies
I only put on 14kgs and lost 10 by the time I got home from hospital
mum had no probs BF
I couldn't BF
mum's boobs got bigger and bigger and bigger - she's now a 18DD
mine went from 12B to 14C and back to 12C sometimes 12B depending on the bra
mum's babies ranged from 5lb to 9lb
my DS was 9lb 8oz
mum's babies all slept from 6pm to 6am straight from the hospital
I was up and down all night with my DS
so all in all really nothing was similar
Both mum and I fell pregnant very easily. Both first borns had to get rush out: forceps/vacum and were not breathing at firts. We both hide our pregnancies, we both got comments on not being very big. Other then that I am not sure, she cant remember a lot about the pregnancies, this used to frustrate me a bit, but after I had Aden I know why, you want to forget the horrible things and just remember the nice ones. :D
All I know is that it was quite easy for us both to become pregnant.
:fingerscrossed: that Nugget doesn't do what I did to my mum... I was 3 weeks late and then completely posterior! Mind you, someone told me I can help this by leaning forward and slouching a bit..? so then bubberlicious can get comfy aginst my belly rather than my back or something.

Mine and Mum's were totally different. She had easy pregnancies (3) despite morning sickness and very short labours (3 hour labour with me her first baby). She had little babies and all natural, no drugs, no stiches. Mum never went into labour naturally ( all induced)
I had a horrible pregnancy, drugs during labour, massive baby and 3rd degree tear. Oh and I went into labour naturally with waters breaking at home.
I thought I was in for an easy time of it if I was to follow Mum but it wasnt to be.
At the moment my partner and I are in the early stages of TTC
You're doing that AND typing at the same time?!?
Now that's talent!!;)
LOL! I did say *early* stages!

Well there we not many similarities between mine and my mum's pregnancies.
She only got one stretch mark out of three pregnancies, not sure how long it took ttc but i def know i was a surprise and so was my little brother although my sister who is the middle child wasn't so there's nothing similar there as both of mine were planned.
She had very quick easy labours and deliveries with the three of us and i had 2 hard deliveries (a c/section and a VBAC).
Although we both had easy relatively trouble free pregnancies so that was the only thing that was the same.
wow i wished some of her luck with the stretchmarks and labours and deliveries had rubbed off on me ;)

Nope, not at all.
All my pg's have been different to both of my mother's.
Except we both got as big as a house!

My mum never ever discussed her pregnancies with me, or talked about raising us kids....nothing. So I have no idea if mine were like hers or not. All I know is that with her last pregnancy, my sister was 9lb 13oz and had the umbilical cord around her neck, so mum had to have an emergency c-section. The obstetrition only came to town once a month and he happened to be there that day, otherwise both mum and my sister would have died.

Both my mother and I got pregnant very easily (first try every time) and we both had long labours with our first babies (hers was 16 hours, mine was 18 hours).
I had morning sickness with both pregnancies, she never had it in either of hers.
No my pregnancy was very different to my mums. My mum had hardly any m/s, I couldn't get off the couch. My mum was in maternity wear at 10 weeks cause she just ballooned, I never fitted maternity wear. I only grew a belly and maternity clothes wouldn't fit me anywhere else. My mum hated being pg, I loved it (after the m/s).
Now my nana (my maternal grandmother) and I had very similar pregnancies and she is the only other woman in the family that vomited during labour.
At my first app the midwife I saw told me that you shouldn't compare pregnancy and labour to anyone but if you do make it your maternal grandmother, because that's who you'll most likely be closest to.
In saying that, on my mum's side of the family the longest labour was 4 1/2 hours (my nana had three 2 hour labours). My dad's side of the family had longer labours (approx. 24 hours) and I came out in the middle at a 14 hour labour. I was still at home by the time my mum, nana and aunty were holding all their babies!
Hi there. My mum and I are very similar. We both conceived very easy and both had very mild morning sickness.
The only thing i hope we are not similar in, is that my mum had 8 children, me being her 3rd @23 and I am now preg with my 3rd due when I am 23  .
My mum also miscarried before getting preg with me so I was her 4th preg but 3rd baby. I am glad i didnt follow her in that aspect but yes we are pretty spot on :D
polus my little bro is the same age as my daughter :D MADNESS
