View Full Version : How Did I Get Nits????
Hi
I was just having a shower and was washing my hair, when looked at the hair in my hand (that had come out) I spotted this bug on my finger...
I am soo grossed out, how does an adult get nits?... I just finished looking at my daughters hair and i couldnt find anything.
i think that it is head lice..i googled.. it and it loooks like the pic i seen, my sis thinks it is probably just a bug..
To make things worse it is my daughters 3rd bday on sunday... do i have to cancell the party? or will it be ok if i treat out hair tomorrow.?
YUCK!

If you treat your hair tomorrow it should be right
Headlice looks like a small ant with legs spread outwards, about 8 legs i think, an adult lice is the size of a grain of rice, aged 2 weeks. It takes 2 weeks to go from lavae to adult. It may have jumped from an infected person to you or you have lavae in your hair that has progessed the full cycle. Definately treat your hair, your kids and partner asap, then do it again 24 hrs later. I have found a great one (im a hairdresser, trust have tried a few) its called LICE BOMB,they also have a preventative spray. try price attack. Also Moove has a great comb thru conditioner with a great comb. Also wash all sheets on all beds and towels. A pia but has to be done.
Good Luck with it and hope this helps , cheers Jen
meant to add you'll be fine for that party, most eggs and lice will die first time but some eggs don't so redo 24 hrs later and again in 7 days.

it possibly could have come from your kids (do they go to daycare) It may have crawled on their hair, and then straight to yours if you gave them a cuddle.. (nits cant jump, and they only live for about 3-4 hours if not on a human head)
You dont have to wash all bedding etc, they dont survive long, but there is so much conflicting advice about it. a shake out is all thats needed, as there is nothing for them to cling too.
to get them all you have to do is sit on a seat (bus... car... aeroplane... etc ) and lean back to where someone else left a hair!! it doesn't take much ..
are you certain you have them??? is your head itchy (not now... when you think about it .. you will itch... I mean allllll the time??) - you can always check by spreading conditioner through wet hair ... and then using a fine toothed comb... they cant cling to the conditioner... and you will definately find some if you have them..
they usually start behind your ears and around towards the neck (where it is darker and safer) - then breed and move further around the head..
head lice live on your blood... so you will also notice little bites on your head (scabby bits ... TMI??) - if you have them...
as a teacher - I have copped a fair whack of them over the years...

So Veve for future reference what have you found the best weapon against treating the nits? My mum used to use Orange - Medic but I don't even know if that stuff is around anymore, it was all natural etc.
well - I tried all the natural stuff that I could get... but most of it gave me migraines
currently (not right now... but I have a can in the cupboard) I am using the ban lice stuff (white can... purple lid) - it is like a mousse .. which makes it REALLY easy to use ... . and although chemical based it doesn't have an overwhelming smell (which is where the migraines come from..)
oooh I should get a commission for that speech :D

Tar though, will keep that stuff in mind if the need ever arises. Can I also ask what causes the migraines in the other products is it just the smells, and are you prone to migraines?
I think it is because you have to leave the mixture on for so long... and yes .. for me it was just the intense smell (it was right up there with the foils at the hairdresser... REALLY intense)
no... I used to get migranes as a kid.. dont anymore ...

Have you seen a movie lately? That's how a friend of mine contracted them. Oh and the eggs can live for seven days off the human head until they hatch and without the food supply (your blood) they die, and adults can live for 12 hours off the human head. So make sure you wash your pillows and blankets you sleep with and vacuum the carpet. Don't forget the headrest of your car, give it a good vacuum as well. The natural remedies don't really work very well so the nit conditioner is really good for combing out the nits and eggs as well as killing them in the process. If it's bad infestation, you might need a insecticide (the strongest kind). Good luck and if you feel that your head is still itchy after the treatment, repeat it because they aren't all dead. Repeat in 7 days to kill anymore hatched eggs.. no worries.

Nits LOVE healthy and clean hair!
I got them off a sheep I was rearing just before I got married, I was so embarrased :o and it was horribly uncomfortable - don't worry about Sunday - if you are extra concerned after you have done your treatment just put your hair up while your guests are there etc
Good luck!
I get the little B%$%ards all the time.
I think its just my hair (long thick and dry). If I see a kid at Woolies scratching I bolt the other way. I use the tea tree nit killer that get rids of them in one go. I pop the pillow covers in the dryer for 10mins and the heat kills any eggs or lice.
I used to use the preventative spray but loathed the smell, so I put leave in conditioner in DS hair (makes it too hard for them to latch on).
Nasty little buggers..and they always come when I have booked in to get hair done.:banghead:
should mention ds hasn't had them since using leave in conditioner....

ROFL - Oh Jessie... you made me laugh out loud!!!! Isn't life different in the country!!!!
I would put conditioner on your dry hair and then comb it out to see if it was actually nits in the first place.
My kids had nits several years ago and we tried absolutely every chemical treatment available and nothing worked, eventually i just did the conditioner thing every day until they were all gone, havent had a nit since:smiliedance:
tea tree shampoo is what i would recommend:yes:
