What is the standard age for circumcising your baby? I assume I'll want to get it done (if I'm having a boy...) as soon as possible, but what is usual?

[text removed] But i guess you could chat to the midwife or your OB and yr next check up to see what options you have, i know it is not offered at my hospital, we have to head to Brisse 400km away.
Have you looked into the pros and cons of circumsision? Might be a good idea too.

The Dr I went to started them at 6 weeks old. I don't know what the 'standard' age is but I had one done at 6 weeks and the other at 10 months.

Hi, my son was 6 weeks to the day. The hospital wouldn't do it, we had to get a referral from a Dr & find a paediatric (sp?) surgeon in our area who does babies. The first Dr I was referred to only did adults & the only other one I could find in my area was luckily just down the road.
I dont know if you're aware but it does cost money, ours cost $500.
I was told that they like to do it ideally before 6 weeks of age :)

Good luck with it all, any questions feel free to ask me if I can help I will

I dont mean to sound rude but this was posted in the PRO CIRCUMCISION area so it shouldn't start a debate at all... fingers crossed as poeple can get quite passionate going either way.

Sorry, didnt mean to offend those who circumsise, didnt notice it was in the pro thread.

I'd advise to wait until you can let the bub have a general anaesthetic, which I believe is around 1 year of age.

Even with the plastibell method, the glans and the foreskin of the penis have to be forcibly separated (ie torn from each other) for the bell to be inserted beneath the forskin - and given how many nerve endings are in the foreskin I can only imagine that would be incredibly painful without anaesthetic.

In my religion it is recommended on the 7th day as the nerves are not fully developed therefore pain should be minimal. I was a bit scared of having it done and pulled out at that time but had him done on day 12... he had plasti-bell and didnt make a sound it also didnt bother him at all while healing but did take 14 days to come away. Looks great, no issues like extra skin or scars or anything that u can hear about :)

We are Gold Coast if u are around here i can give u the name of the Doc we used :)

Hi,
The RACP says there's no reason to and also that IF you're going to do it:

- insist on a licensed medical practitioner

- insist on EFFECTIVE anesthesia (any procedure that starts within a few minutes has not waited long enough for numbing to set in. Both sugar, and the amount of booze you can suck from a rag ARE NOT an anesthetics. The amount of booze it takes to block pain is quite toxic).

- don't even think about it until he is 6 months.

Untrue. What's not developed is the endorphine response which blocks pain.

Insist on proper anesthesia.

Friends had their baby done (can only go on their experience, as i'll never have elective plastic surgery performed on my sons for no good reason) when he was 3weeks old, -2weeks corrected age (ie he wasn't actually due for another 2 weeks) and he screamed the place down. My friend (she didn't really want it done, jsut did it to keep her DH happy) had to leave the surgery, and she could still hear him screaming shen she was outside. He would sleep or settle that day/night, and was too young for panadol too, so she could give him nothing to calm him down.

IF one of my boys had to be done for medical reasons, i'd wait until the could have proper pain relief for the surgery, despite what some say - it DOES cause them pain, and just because they can't process it/remember it doesn't make it anyless painful for them.

My sons were all done before they were 8 weeks old. One Dr I called wouldn't do them after they were 4 weeks, another if they were older than 8 weeks. Some Drs won't perform them until the child is over 12 months.

Hi,
We got our son done at almost 6 weeks of age, he was fine, cried for maybe 2 minutes and had a feed and then was happy.
