Hi,
As I have mentioned before- I have been prescribed Zofran for my morning sickness.
But I am concerned in taking it- the information sheet states that you shouldn't take it whilst pregnant obviously unless advised otherwise.
BUT it makes me normal- to a point- it means I can drive, go to work and just be slightly nauseated rather than living/sleeping in the toilet thinking I'd rather die.
Has anyone heard of side effects or problems with baby with the use of Zofran?
Would love peoples opinions.
Ta
Mel
I weighed up the risks when the Dr prescribed it for me for my 3rd and 4th pregnancies.
The risk seems to be minimal and the benefits outweighed them- to be able to function, look after my other children, work, drive, live then for me those minimal risks were worth it.
\I think it's classed as a category B? Which doesn't necessarily mean it has bad side effects- it may mean that they haven't done the amount of testing on it as they have say panadol.

If you google it, ait comes up with some information sheets that tell you it is category B1 for pregnancy. This means it there has been testing, and no reported ill-effects, butnot extensive testing. From what I could find there has been one major human trial. The findings showed no more birth defects than int he control group, and a decrease (although this was not attributed to Zofran directly) in miscarriage when compared to the control group.
the main reason (from what i could find) for the lack of testing, is that it was designed in the first place to help with naseau in cancer patients (THAT scared me!!) then somehow it was discovered that it helped with MS too.
I took 4-8mg per day from about week 10 of my pregnancy with DS until he was induced at 36weeks. I could go to work and look after DD so much better when taking it. I developed PE and had liver issues, but I also Had that in my first pregnancy where i took no medication, so don't think it was linked. DS is a perfect bubba, no problems.
I am also now on 12mg per day for this pregnancy, and that is making me feel semi-normal. I was in hospy on a drip at 6weeks as i couldn't stop :barf:, then back again 3weeks later when i tried to drop the dosage. For me, the risks of not taking it are higher than taking it.

I didn't take it when pg but my 2 1/2 year old takes it for severe nausea... it's a wonder drug, makes her life liveable... she has liver disease and kidney issues and multiple other problems and so far no damage to her at all... and the children's hospital prescribed it....she takes 2mg, 3 times a day and is 11 kgs... if it's safe for her... should b okay 4 you... It's used extensively in the US!!!

Thank you so much for your replies!!!
I too was a little worried when I hear that is mostly prescribed for cancer patients.
But I have decided that sanity and being healthly has to be a better option.
I'm only on 4mg a day, which seems to be helping enough for me to go to work and function with a little bit of nausea (just to remind me that I'm pregnant!! :))
I feel much more confident hearing your responses- thank you sooo much!!
I had it when I was preggy a few times and it really helped
DD loves the stuff she has it 3 times a day and it realy helps with her nausea

I only took it when I had to go out. While at home, I tried to keep off it as much as I could.

I also took Zofran when I was pregnant with DD, as many have mentioned the benefits of functioning and not needing multiple admissions to hospital for dehydration, for me, certainly outweighed the possible, if any, risks.
I know it's hard to reconcile taking drugs when you are pregnant, I `anxed' over that too, I don't even drink coffee or tea when pregnant
Good Luck with the rest of your pregnancy :hugs:I hope the nausea settles down (mine did, and I was off the Zofran at five months)

tbh I'd never heard of it until I saw it mentioned few times here. My m/s has just kicked in and I feel so awful most of the day. but so far not been vomitting and can still find food to eat so I think i'm probably lucky compared to you and some others on here. Maybe it's one of those things that's better if you can do without but if you can't hold down food or function at all you must be better off taking.
Maybe it's prescribed for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy? That is supposed to make you feel sick and nauseous. I wouldn't be concerned that it is also prescribed for cancer patients as this is no reflection on the strength or danger of the drug it is probably just that it helps with nausea? I know that there is an antidepressent that is also prescribed for anxiety and then they discovered it helped people to give up cigarettes!!!
Best of luck. I reckon take it while you need it so you can look after yourself and bub :)

I am happy to report that my morning sickness has eased at 10 weeks!!!! :yelclap::thumbsup:
I still get nausea but I just throw up and feel better and continue on. It's not stopping me from doing anything!!!
Thank god!!!!!! I am a much happier mummy to be now!!
Thanks for your support ladies, you have such worries when you think it could potentially affect bubs what you do and eat so it's nice to have opinions from others in similar situations
Hi so glad your ms has settled! :)
Zofran is an antiemetic, as in is used for stopping nausea and vommiting. It use to be really expensive and the govt only recognised it for cancer patients with nauesa and servere vommiting but now it is readly used for all nausea, after maxolon or stemetil (not safe when preg) has failed to help.
My pharmacist when I asked about it told me many preggy mums take Zofran and have no ill effects on the child. Hope that helps:)
