Hi there, I have thrush and am breastfeeding my baby, the doctor prescribed diflucan one and assures me its ok to use whilst breastfeeding. However on the packaging it insists to not use whilst breastfeeding, I am afraid it will affect my baby in some way thats not described on the packaging.
Instead I am continuously using nilstat cream, but find it hard to use it each day. Was wondering if anyone out there may know what the repercussions are of using diflucan one whilst breast feeding, will it affect my babies brain? or development?
Thankyou in advance to all replies.
p.s. what does dd mean or ds
DD and DS refer to dear/ darling/ damn daughter and son
Thrush treatments are safe during pregnancy/ breastfeeding and I took difflucan. They "don't use during pregnancy" is just legal protection for the companies. It won't do anything to babies brain or development.

DD-Darling daughter
DS-darling son
[well i think any way! i know they are daughter/son!]
i'm not sure about the diflucan, but when i had thrush i used canisten, it's a cream you put on so doesn't matter if you're breastfeeding

yeah, I am using nilstat which is a cream, it has mostly settled my thrush, but it is not completely cleared up. I shall do the full 14 day course of cream and if no different then I shall try the diflucan one.

hi there,
typing one handed so please excuse the punctuation.
i had a rather bad advanced case of thrush when my dd was 1 - 2 months old. it was very persistant amd i tried everything to get rid of it, and i mean everything (nilstat, bicarb, canesten cream, lemons cut in half coconut style inside my bra - that was a different look haha). in the end the only thing that got rid of it was a course of diflucan tablets that a specialist very experienced in the latest breastfeeding research prescribed for me. she explained that they no longer believe fluconazole (the active ingredient) to be harmful to breasfeeding bubs and she couldn't understand why they continue to put that on the packaging. in fact the pharamist that filled my script said the same thing.
a few other tips were:
express a bit of breastmilk after your feed onto your nipple and allow it to air dry (that stuff is magic, it'll fix nearly anything!)
don't wear a bra to bed at night even if it means sleeping on towels. this allows the area to 'breathe' and is important as moisture fosters the growth of thrush.
wash towels, bras etc every day and hang in direct sunlight
don't use anti-bac soap as that actually kills good bacteria and can cause thrush to spread to your fingernails
stay away from sugar and flavoured yoghurts, jams etc (natural yoghurt is good though )
anyway, sorry for rambling. i hope you get to the bottom of it soon as it can get quite painful.
ETA: of course do what you feel is right, and if you aren't comfortable using the diflucan, it's certainly worth trying the other things first, after all they may work well for you, especially if you have caught it early!
Thanks Ourlittleblessing! I have nipple thrush and it's grim. The protocol from The Women's hospital here says fluconazole, every other day for a week.

yeah it's the pits isn't it! I thought mine would never go away....
it actually took 9  tablets (one every second day for a week at a time) for mine to go away. But that is very rare, so don't dispair! The specialist said that one week usually does it.
I haven't had a problem with thrush since.
I was finding BF all so hard and wanted to throw it all in a couple of times as it was so painful, but I am a stubborn thing, and I'm so glad that I persevered now as it is so easy now and not only that but enjoyable too!
Good luck :)

Hi there ladies, thanks for all your replies. It is actually vaginal thrush I have not nipple thrush. But am halfway through my nilstat course, if this doesn't work I shall probably use the diflucan one treatment.
What I would like to know, is how on earth do you catch these things.
My only guess is that when I got mastitis a month or so ago the antibiotics destroyed my natural line of defence and bang the thrush just thrived.
