Uncertain if this is in the correct area but...

My DS is 7 months and his big toenails are still cracked all the way across the top. I trim them so they look like normal toenails but they always re-grow cracked. All his other nails are fine.

Is this normal? Did what I say make sense?

My DDs toenails have been odd since birth, so I think I know what you mean. She's 2.5 now and most are starting to look normal, but a few and definitely her big toes have a strange fold in them. It's like the nail bed is too small and is recessed down into the toe, so when the nail grows it is pushed upwards by the higher skin at the end of the toe. And winds up looking bent and a bit cracked.

I have always assumed that even if it's not normal, there isn't much that could be done at this age anyways. I just try to cut flat across the top so I don't give her a tendency to ingrown toenails later in life.

Both my girls big toes are like that too. Mac's are just starting to look a bit more normal, and she's nearly 3. I just cut straight across the top too like Martha, and hope they grow out right. I thought hers were a bit odd, but then Charlee came out with odd ones too. Wonder why its only the big toes though?

My dd has weird toe nails too. They have lines running across them and are very weak and peel off. I haven't ever had to cut them much. I actually took her to a GP to see if she was deficient in something and he thought it was probably just genetics and they would strengthen up as she gets older. She is 4 now and I am not sure that they are any better.
