Yes! - I've requested tootsie rolls and dill pickle chips for xmas - don't know if they'll make it through customs or not - though my mom has sent reece peanut butter cups through the mail with success so i'm hoping.....

I just got back last week from 2 weeks in Montreal and Toronto, so I got my fill of GOOD bagels and treats. I had requests to bring back Reece's Peanut Butter Cups (bought at the post-halloween sales, woohoo!), as well as big marshmallows and graham crackers so that a fellow canuck could make s'mores, lol

All I hear about is how I'm going to have to have some tim hortons and a boston creme donut when I get off the plane one day when I go and meet my FIL over in Toronto

I'm not letting dh read this thread.. I wont stop hearing about his cravings for weeks!

mmmmmm s'mores :) It has been 11 years! Way too long.

PS - You can get good marshmallows at Target. They are in the lolly aisle. I was so excited when I found them because I wanted to make rice crispie squares and the marshmallows here taste different.

Little Bean, I've tried making rice krispie squares once, and they were awful. I just used the Coles brand marshmallows I think and they were way too sticky. Maybe I did something wrong? I also was lazy and just used them out of the bag instead of selecting only the white ones, so we had pink rice krispie squares! lol

little bean -Good tip on the marshmallows, I'll have to check it out. They taste fruity here or something.

"Real" fluorescent orange Kraft Dinner - yum!!

janiceg- sorry to stir up cravings! :)

Kimberlee - Oh! Dill pickle chips!! I just started salivating.
they should get through customs no problems, it's the microwave popcorn that they confiscate!

Chicadee-I am very jealous of the Hallowe'en sale candy! Somehow Hallowe'en candy is better!

If anyone gets desperate and has a few bucks to spare, I found this website that ships all our favourites. I think it may take ages to arrive.
It is VERY expensive though - but some days, I am VERY tempted!!

chickadee - definitely try again with those marshmallows from Target. I'm pretty sure they are imported from the US and they have that normal marshmallow taste.

Before I found them, I tried making it with other marshmallows and it was horrible - I ended up throwing the whole lot in the garbage!!

maplewattle - Great website but I had to stop looking at it as I was getting even more cravings....

I know kimberlee! It's deadly! Today for me it's Captain Crunch cereal.

I asked my mom to mail me some Twizzlers as a treat - had a MAJOR craving and can't find it over here - it took ages (slow mail) , and when it finally arrived, RATS had knawed into the bag somewhere along the route. Devastating!!

Your so lucky maple.. Dh has family over there, both his parents, siblings etc, and they all refuse to post anything over, even if we pay for it.. Dh left some of his stuff over there last time, including one of dd's teddies he took, and they wont even post a teddy  Good luck to us getting them to send over anything else! You got a good mum :p

That's terrible Leeny! Some people have no idea how hard it can be to be on the other side of the world! Your poor dd without her teddy!

Her granddad lives in toronto, as well as her great grandma, and her grandma lives in alliston, as well as 2 other great grandparents, her aunties etc.. Not one of them have ever even posted Gwen a birthday card.. It really does make me sad for her.. It'd cost a dollar or 2 to send her a birthday card.. How slack!!

Leeny, how big or squashable is the bear? Do you think they'd send the bear to my parents? Mum sends parcels every few months and wouldn't mind popping the bear in.

Leeny
21-11-2008, 18:21
Its probably about 30cms in height, normal fluffy teddy-reindeer-bear type thing, but I'm sure it it could be smooshed into a pretty small parcel... Where abouts is your mum? I'll have to ask my SIL if she'd be ever so kind enough as to post it somewhere in her own country

Ohh, and Happy birthday to your DD!!!!! (just seen your ticker;))

Hi - my mom has just got her ticket to come out for the birth of our next daughter in Feb! so if anyone has any crazy cravings I can add it to the list of things I've already asked her to bring out and post it to you when she gets here.
Also Leeny if you want to send the stuffed animal out to her (she's in BC) she can bring that out as well (she'll get here mid Feb) - if your family hasn't already sent it.
I'm very excited!

Well...I tried talking to dh's sister, and she seems to be ignoring me  Thanks Martha and kimberlee for the offer's.. It was lovely!! If she talks to me, I'll ask her if she's still got the bear.. Unfortunately, I doubt she kept it.. I hope she did.. But I have my doubts..

Kimberlee.. Dh said he'd love love love some orange and cherry kool-aid.. It's 3.50 a packet at the place over here that sells it.. Just crazy isn't it? I just spent $13 dollars on a packet of reese for him for christmas.. It's just going to get more expensive too.. Ludicris!

kimberlee
16-12-2008, 19:22
Hi Leeny - I can for sure get my mom to bring over kool-aid and a couple reese too if you want! I think I want some now!! I'll put it on the list and PM you when she gets here - looks like about Feb 18!!

Wow thanks kimberlee, thats lovely! :) Does your mum come out here much? Dh hasn't seen his dad in over 8 years, so he might be heading off to Canada next year.. I done some looking at airfares though.. Wow :( I don't know if we can save that much, especially when we're still paying off a big credit card bill.

Yeah tickets are getting expensive - my mom just found a deal for Feb from Vancouver for 1500 CAD which is really good and she doesn't have to go through the US which is really nice. Air new zealand i think.

We tend to bring my mom out since flying the whole family over there is really expensive - she's been out 4 times in the last 3 years. I've been back 2x in 4 years and my husband has made the trip once with me but half my family is in Ontario and the other half in BC so when I go over it's more expensive as well as I fly to Vancouver then on to Ontario then back to Vancouver trying to fit everyone in....

My mom usually brings 2 suitcases so she can bring stuff for me - I've already ordered a couple dolls for my daughter and my husband is a really big guy so she brings clothes out for him and shoes (it's hard finding size 13 out here) I think Canadian/American (my dh is american) sizes are just bigger - back home my DH is an XL or XXL but out here we have to go to big and tall and get 4XL or 3XL and it looks like a tent on him - he doens't have a belly but is really muscular - anyways I tend to buy lots online and bombard my mom with deliveries to fill a suitecase with - so kool-aid and reese are no big deal to bring out - and we're just up on tamborine mountain - actually have friends that live in Greenbank and it's easy to post to you!

Just noticed this thread and how out of date it is - I expect all previous posters have had their bubs and are probably not logging in so much.

Just curious if there are any canucks out there and in the odd situation of being pregnant for the first time while being away from "home"? I've been in Melbourne for four and half years and am married to a great Aussie and do make my home here now, but this is the first time I have really felt homesick for Vancouver now that I am pregnant (due jan 2011). Would be great to connect with anyone else in a similar situation, particularly if you are in Melbs and may be keen for a cuppa somewhere in the city down the line!

BTW my Canadian cravings have been very specific: Milestones Thai Noodle Salad, Pirate cookies, Ruffles All Dressed chips and Passion Flaky's!! Brutal. Probably best I'm not there, come to think of it.

Hope to hear from someone soon!

Thanks for your reply all the same...wish I was on the Gold Coast!! Its rather cold here at the moment, though of course nothing like home (I always try to remind myself of this when I catch myself in a whinge).

You're a student doula, hmmm? That is awesome!

Have a great day. :)

CANADA DRY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lots of home-specific food, not really Canadian specific. Things like the Mennonite Apple Fritters at St. Jacob's Market...

Funny thing is I actually got pregnant while at home over Christmas - and within a week I was turned off Iced Capps. Prior to that I was drinking them nonstop. Literally, every time we saw a Tim Hortons, I would beg my mum to stop even if I already had one.

I'd kill for Timmies here... Donuts. Cookies. And actually, the oatcakes too.

I wanna go home!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi

I just came across this section. It's a little hidden amongst all the other information on Bub Hub.

I totally feel your pain on the cravings for Canadian items. We LOVE Timmies (double, double of course!- via the drive thru). Tim Hortons coffee brewed here is just not the same. My parents were just here for Christmas and brought me some items- maple syrup and reeces peanut butter cups. I have found a couple places where you can get items but they are stupidly expensive.

We're planning on going back to TO for a visit in July. We started looking at airfares and were shocked. It's practically a down payment on a house:eek:! We're going to try and use some of our points. I'll let you know if I find a good deal.

Carolyn

Hi Rainbeaukitty, I hope your bub came safely and you're all settled into motherhood!
Have you considered joining the Canada Club? We went to a few things when we were in Perth. I know they're active in Melbourne and put on events regularly. Try: http://www.canadaclub-vic.org.au/
