I'm watching 9am with David and Kim and in the opening part they mentioned a segment on breastfeeding in public. It isn't on just yet, thought I'd let you know in case anyone wants to watch it :)

Was it worth watching?
Or was it one of those pices on how to cover up and not make other people uncomfortable?

Turns out it was pretty boring, and at the end (surprise surprise) it was a plug for an online shop for clothing to make BFing in public more comfortable (so I'm assuming that means things you drape over etc. You didn't miss much.

I was going to mention those mum bib things, but did not want to offend anyone.
They are getting marketed everywere, but I seem to get my heckles up when I see them:p
You shouldn't have to feel like covering up is right.

I was really let down by the segment. I was hoping that it would take away some of the 'negatives' that people have about feeding in public. But it was about covering up to save everyone else.
I think the blankets are great, if you have an issue with feeding in public, but i dont think they are the answer. We shouldnt be forced to feed under a blanket.
I think there should be a national breastfeed in public day. There should be more done to take away other peoples problems with it.
I have always fed DS2 when i am out. I walk through big w feeding him. I have never had any negative comments and i wont be hiding away.

Yeah, I was at a shopping mall and a lady sat down to feed using one of those things at a food court, and for some reason I felt sad that she didn't feel comfortable about feeding without it, that she really thought that others would care that she was breastfeeding. And her baby was so tiny, I really don't think people would have noticed or thought much of it.

Actually, the drape thing was made of a rather bright fabric and was big and cumbersome, and TBH I think the fact that she was using that would have attracted more attention than if she had just descreetly breastfed without it.

Look, I do understand if people are uncomfortable feeding in public, I know I still am at times, and imagine how it is feeding a tall 21 month old. When you're feeding a small baby people really don't look, but feeding a toddler is somehow a bit controversial in Australia. The Swedes and Norwegians have the right idea (highest BFing rates in the world and toddlers still BFing is a regular sight in public - I've been to Norway so I remember that).
