Hi Ladies,

I know there has been a bit of talk in the July Mums 'n' Bubs thread regarding solids, but i cant seem to keep track of the thread lately.

So just wanted to know...

Have you started your bub on solids?
What age?
How did you know they were ready?
What Food?
Do you make it yourself or buy something?
What do they seem to like?
How long before you try something new for them?
Any other things you want to share with me would be great.

Thank you,

Lissa7

Haven't yet but think I am going to need to soon. Lily has her 4 mth check up next Monday so will discuss it with MCHN then once I get her weight etc... checked!!! I go by Tizzie Halls routines as I guide to starting solids it's a great book and easy to follow. Have a look at the website www.saveoursleep.com.au (http://www.saveoursleep.com.au)

So just wanted to know...

Have you started your bub on solids? no but very soon
What age? 4 1/2 months
How did you know they were ready? watching me eat and waking during night
What Food? rice cereal
Do you make it yourself or buy something? always do my own vegies but I do use jars of fruit and custard
What do they seem to like? not sure yet
How long before you try something new for them? every 3 days
Any other things you want to share with me would be great.

Thank you,

Lahri

Have you started your bub on solids? yes

What age?3 months

How did you know they were ready? She watched everything I ate, not going long between feeds and a paed I met told me that she was ready

What Food? Baby rice with EBM, then I added some pureed pear and tried some apple. We have now tried sweet potato and carrot

Do you make it yourself or buy something?Make it myself, but I did buy a jar of apple custard as I wasn't sure what apples would be suitable for a baby

What do they seem to like? Everything so far

How long before you try something? I have given it a few days so far, especially before introducing anything into the baby rice.

Maddison opens her mouth when you put the spoon close, she knows what to do and took to it very well. If she didn't shown me any signs, I probably wouldn't have started her on solids just yet.

I use EBM with the baby rice so it is a familiar taste but you can use water. I made it quite milky to start with so it was easy for her to swallow and digest, you can then change the quantity to suit. Not like formula when you have set measurements. I started on a table spoon of baby rice with 3oz milk.

I read that you have to remember it is a new sensation and that babies have to learn to move the food from their tongue to the back of their mouth. They will often stick their tongue out when they first try foods as they are learning what to do with it.

I did it the other way round, but they suggest trying pureed veg before fruit so your baby doesn't get used to sweet things and then turn their nose up at veg. M seemed fine with fruit first then veg, but that's what the books say.

Have you started your bub on solids? Not yet.

What age? Probably after 5mo.

How did you know they were ready? I will just give it a try and see how he goes. I'm also waiting until he can sit up a bit better too.

What Food? I'll start with rice cereal and pureed fruits, banana etc, then add some potato, pumpkin, s.potato, avocado etc.

Do you make it yourself or buy something? I make all my own baby food. It's not hard and you know what is in it that way. Jarred baby food is not as tasty as home made.

What do they seem to like? My DD always loved rice cereal and pureed pears, pumpkin and avocado.

How long before you try something new for them? I would try it for a few days but to be honest, the really basic baby food is so safe it rarely causes problems...this is more of an issue with wheat, dairy and eggs and those aren't given until later anyway.

Any other things you want to share with me would be great.

I loved starting DD on solids. It's so much fun to see their reactions to things. The only thing I would suggest to watch out for in a breastfed baby is not to progress too quickly as your supply can suffer if they are eating too much solids too quickly....oh and remember to enjoy it!:)

Just started Bridie last week...

Have you started your bub on solids? YEP
What age? 4 months
How did you know they were ready? Didn't really see any signs, but MCHN told me to start her to (perhaps) stop the CONTSTANT spewing!
What Food? rice cereal, which she didn't like at all, so we tried some pureed pumpkin and potato, a few days apart...she loves it, she's been grabbing it off the spoon and smushing it in her mouth.
Do you make it yourself or buy something? Made the purees myself, bought the farex, will try some jars too
What do they seem to like? Loves pumpkin and potato.
How long before you try something new for them? About 3 days.

Thanks for your imput ladies.
I have not tried Jessica on solids yet, but i am thinking to try it in the next couple of weeks.
She has been watching everything i eat for the last month, and she is doing the chewing action with her mouth so i wanted to try her out with some solids, but there is so much contradicting advice out there regarding starting them at 6 months due to alergies, and No start them at 4 months etc etc. It really is confusing for us mothers with all the arguments. Anyway i will try some solids soon and let you know how i go.
Well done to those who have started and bub's are loving it. (are their poo's discusting yet?)

Have you started your bub on solids? Not yet
What age? I am thinking around 6 months.
How did you know they were ready?
What Food? I am researching baby led weaning atm.
Do you make it yourself or buy something? I will be making it myself.
What do they seem to like?
How long before you try something new for them?
Any other things you want to share with me would be great.
Do it in your own time, dont let other people force you into it. Also dont force bubs into eating, let her guide you with what she wants.

Have you started your bub on solids? Yes
What age? 4 months
How did you know they were ready? Thomas was constantly watching what we were eating and started waking during the night again.
What Food? Pumpkin, potato, sweet corn, carrot, apples, pears. He didn't like rice cereal at all.
Do you make it yourself or buy something? At the moment I am buying the jars but will be making my own down the track.
What do they seem to like? Thomas loves pumpkin and sweet corn
How long before you try something new for them? I alternate between different flavours each day. Haven't had any problems yet.
Any other things you want to share with me would be great. Don't feel like you have to do it just because she is a certain age. Do it when you are both ready and have fun watching her little face when she tries all the new taste :cloud9:

I've just started my DD on Farex but am wondering how much everyone is feeding their 4-5 month old? Not sure how much per feed and how many meals a day.

Lahri
25-11-2008, 15:22
I started of doing one tbsp of baby rice to 3 of EBM, just for a breakfast/mid morning feed. Sometimes early evening.

M has been having solids now for 4 weeks, so as well as all of my normal breast feeds, she has rice cereal in the morning and then pureed vegetables in the evening before her bath etc. Sometimes she has fruit with her baby rice, just depends on how I feel.

I pureed the vegetables and the froze them in ice cube trays so she started off having 1 ice cube, maybe with a bit of baby rice and EBM. The last two days she has had 2 cubes with baby rice and EBM. You can always leave what you little one doesn't want if you make to much.

Have you started your bub on solids?
Not yet

What age?
hopefully 6 months or more

I will look for signs of hunger and bub watching us eat

What Food?
Anything and Everything besides dairy and nuts

Do you make it yourself or buy something?
He will be fed the same food we eat and feeding himself

What do they seem to like?
Not sure yet

How long before you try something new for them? Every couple of days or so

After going through all the pureeing etc for DD I have looked at and will be doing baby led weaning with DS, It will also save alot of time if he eats what we eat so no seperate meals need to be made

hiya gals

it might sound lke a stupid question but i better be stupid than ignorant!!!!!

how do u know that bub is watching/interested in ur eating?

My little one is always looking at me even if i m not eating iykwim....n she has been putting fingers in her mouth for the last 3 weeks.....she is breast fed so i can't make out whether she has increased /decreased appetite for BF n she still does wake up once (sometimes twice )a night for feed.

what should i be looking for?

Lahri
26-11-2008, 11:37
Hi alabama,

I guess all little ones are different and ready in their own time. Our daughter sits on our laps quite often at the dinner table (always wakes up when we eat ) and my husband said she opens her mouth when I put food on my fork and lift it off the plate. I have been giving her solids now for a month so that wasn't quite as obvious then, it is something to look out for those.

When I first started her on solids she was fully breastfed (well she still has all her (.) (.) feeds as well) and she was just looking at the food instead of at me whilst I ate etc.

Sorry, not much help.

Just wanted to tell you all that i tried Jessica on Rice Cereal last weekend (just the one day) and she seemed to love it.
DF was not too sure about it, but this week he has paid more attention to her reactions to what we are eating, and i showed him how she opens her mouth when i give her a little spoon, and she tries to drag it into her mouth. So he has agreed that maybe she is ready, so we will try some more tonight when he gets home from work.
Will let you know how it goes, its all so exciting :yelclap:.

Tracey - we've recently started too. I know I said I would wait till 5mo...:o

Anyway Henry was not too fussed on the rice cereal and EBM but he is very keen when some pureed pears are added :D

He is also trying to drag the spoon (and our hands) into his mouth to get it quicker...and he gets upset if we don't keep the spoonfulls coming quickly enough

So he was definitely developmentally ready. He seems to be digesting it OK and also has been sleeping a bit better too

I tried our little one on an Organic rice cereal that I brought back from the UK with us, she ate it without any problems but I recently bought Rafferty's baby rice and it is soooo much nicer. It tastes like Ready Brek (do you have that here?)

Anyway, I have heard that a lot of babies don't seem to like Farex (I assume that is a brand here) so if they reject that, why not try Rafferty's.

Good luck with tonight tismum2b

Alison glad to hear Henry is enjoying it.

Well gave the rice cereal a go on Friday night, and she loved it. The only thing is she hates it when it gets cold, so i have to try to keep it warm.
I think DF was quite impressed with his little girl sitting up in the highchair eating!!
Will give the Rice Cereal and pureed pears a go this week, with the pears in it do you serve it cold or can you warm it up. Not sure if she will like things cold just yet.
Well done Henry on enjoying your food, now hopefully you will give your poor mum a rest during the night:)
Introducing solids has not really changed Jessica's appitite or routine yet.
What time of the day do you all usually give your bubs their "meal"?

Hey there just a bit of advice you can take or leave......be careful starting your bub on canned or packets (raffertys garden) veges as these usually contain more fruit like apple or pear than actual veges so when you start to make them yourself your bub may not like them because they are not as sweet as the commercial ones......trust me I know ds is 8 months old and I had a hell of a time getting him to eat veges with no fruit in it to sweeten it. No commercial food for ds now just all home cooked, at least i know whats in it!!!
As i said its up to you whether you take my advice. Goodluck with the solids its such a learning curve for both you and bubs!!:flowerz:

Henry is still enjoying his rice cereal (with pears). We tried mashed banana twice and both times it went straight though him so I'm going to leave that a little while longer and try again next month. He seemed to love the flavour though and was perfectly happy apart from the disgusting results in his nappy.

We have also tried a bit of pumpkin and potato pureed together. The first time it did the same thing as the banana :( but the second time he seems OK with it. Again...he absolutely loved it.

Until he is 7mo I am going to stick to only giving about 2 tablspoons at a time usually for dinner (except for the new foods which I give at lunchtime). Some babies don't seem to know when they are full and will just eat and eat if given the chance. I think Henry is one of those babies and I don't want him to miss out on his breastmilk.

Have you started your bub on solids? Yes

What age? 16 weeks (4 months)

How did you know they were ready? He started waking again during the night hungry, catnapping because he was hungry, hungry but not very interested in boob anymore (wouldnt take a bottle of EBM or formula either), would watch us eating and make a chewing motion with his mouth, would try and get hold of what we were eating and try to put it in his mouth.

What Food? First 3 days he had rice-cereal with EBM, next 3 days apple, then i introduced pumpkin and then some carrot.

Do you make it yourself or buy something? i puree up a big batch and put it in the freezer, then i just get it out as i need it. Rice cereal was obviously bought.

What do they seem to like?
He loves pumpkin and carrot, hates the fruit! I even gave him some carrot mixed with a little bit of spinach yesterday and he loved it too!

How long before you try something new for them? 3 days
I was told to do rice cereal on its own for no longer than 3 days as bub will get constipated, so you need to introduce some apple/pear etc.

I wasnt wanting to start Ethan on solids until he was closer to 6 months, however he had different plans! I am a little bit sad not to be exclusively breastfeeding anymore, but i guess i cant stop my little boy from growing up!! :(

We are doing BLW so Zaydn will be eating what we will be eating

Claire can i ask what BLW is? Its probably blatantly obvious, but for the life of me i cant work it out!!!

Baby Led Weaning

Rydens Mummy
04-12-2008, 16:17
Ryden has been on solids foe 2 weeks and will be 18 weeks old tomorrow. For breaky he has half a via brick, he wasnt keen on the rice cereal even with fruit in it. And i dont want him having fruit for breaky as i dont want him to get to like the sweetness in fruit over his vegies. ANd for dinner he has vegies, he has tried Sweet potato, pumpkin, potato, carrots cauli and broccoli, and zucchni. And loves them all. I cook them up and freeze them in ice trays, then pull out the required amount each night. I dont mix many of his vegies, since he like them all i would perfer him too have them seperatly, (hopefully he continues to like then and i dont get a fussy eater) The only ones i mix is potato, i think that would be bland a glugy on it own, so i mix that with one of the other vegies.

I give him 2 or 3 different vegies a night. Tonights menu is ZUcchni, pumpkin and sweet potato.

Baby led weaning means forgetting baby purées and mush and simply letting your baby feed themself from six months old on.

Here is a good site - www. babyledweaning. blogware . com

Hi Kiralee

These fruit & veg are from the routine that I used for starting solids for DD1 & DD2 haven't started Lily yet as she isn't interested. If you would like to know the book PM me it's great and makes it so easy.

From 4 mths - infants rice based cereals, apples, carrots, pears, potatoes, pumpkin, swede, zucchini

From 5 mths - green beans, sweet potato, turnips

Hope this helps :flowerz:

P.S - How are you going did you have your gall bladder out???

I gave Lily some rice cereal as a trial a few weeks back and she hated it I think with some fruit in it she might like it better.

I had my gall bladder out when DD1 was 5 weeks old and the recovery was fairly quick, sore for the first few days then slowly got back to normal I used to cuddle on the couch with her, good luck you will be fine, so much better thank those horrible attacks of pain!!!!

Tried some mashed up Banana yesterday and she loved it. But i think it caused her to have an upset tummy last night :(
Might try some potato and pumpkin soon

She loves apple and rice cereal, but is not a fan of pear at all!

How often are you all feeding your bubs?

Milk - WHAT TIMES....
Solids - How often? What times??

Hoe did you go with the rice cereal Alabama?

Thanks,

09-12-2008, 14:31
The potassium in the banana most likey caused an upset Tracey. Deacon gets an upset tummy from it, so Im just hanging out a little longer for him to have it.

Be careful with ANYTHING with split peas or peas in it (commercial baby food and homemade) it gives Bubba's terrible wind :crying: learnt that lesson!

tlsmum2b
09-12-2008, 16:21
Thanks Bep, today she has been a bit unsettled, think it might have been the Banana. i will remember to stay away from Peas too.

I know Henry (Alisonp's Son) had diarrhea from banana,

but does banana cause constipation??

Jessica was straining (not normal for her) and then finally she passed a poo... but it was thicker than normal. She usually has more runny type poos, but this was like green cake mix!!! Sorry TMI.

Think I will leave banana alone for now...

This is a rough guide in the book I'm reading which might help, I'm going to start this myself tomorrow when I introduce my DD to rice cereal (she had a little pureed apple today which she seemed to like):

7am - Feed (milk)
8am - Solids (breakfast)
11am - Feed (milk)
12am - Solids (lunch)
3pm - Feed (milk)
5pm - Solids (dinner, 1 sweet, 1 savoury)
6pm - Feed (milk)

Personally I'm going to give DD rice cereal around lunchtime for at least a week and give her all her usual formula feeds initially to see how she likes this. Then I might try the above.

Alisonp

Tracey - the green cake mix is the banana!:) The first time Hen had some nana his poo was bright green. I tried him again yesterday with banana mixed with some EBM and rice cereal and we had no problems - maybe because it was not as much banana at once.

Henry's poos are now much more like a paste that liquid (as they were when exclusively breastfed). The paste takes more effort to force out than the breastmilk poos so they will strain a bit.:p

The only thing to watch out for is a formed poo (ie if it looks like a firm adult poo). That is usually a sign to back off a bit or add some more fruit. The warning signs for constipation is the little hard pellets (like sheep poo):D

I have heard before also that bananas can lead to constipation sometimes....as can too much rice cereal.

Have you started your bub on solids?
Yes

What age?
Around 4 months

How did you know they were ready?
I let her tell me she was ready eg:

Watching us eat
Pulling things into her mouth
Waking through the night when she would normally sleep through

What Food?
Home made:
Rice cereal with milk added
Mashed banana

Bought baby foods:
Apple and/or pear
Pumpkin and/or sweetcorn

Do you make it yourself or buy something?
Both as above

What do they seem to like?
Banana, apple and pumpkin so far

How long before you try something new for them?
Every week I try a new taste for her

tlsmum2b
18-12-2008, 13:30
Just thought i would tell you all that Jessica tried sweet corn the other day, and was not a big fan of it, but anything that comes on a spoon now days she is very eager to keep putting in her mouth - even if everytime she screws her face up at the new taste!!!

Alison - Her poos are better! no more cake mix looking, but i do agree that i prefer that than the very watery ones she was doing before solids, they were leaking everytime! Although the smell is not good

How is Henry going? What foods has he had now? Do you still only give him solids at dinner time or are you giving them at breaky or lunch too?

How is everyone elses little bubba doing on the solids?

Alisonp
19-12-2008, 21:03
So far Henry has had rice cereal with pears/apple/banana, sweet potato, pumpkin+potato, and avocado. He has loved everything except the avocado.

I'm probably not going to bother going through all the various veges...just keep with the basic filling stuff until he can go onto stews/casseroles etc.

Once he is old enough to have meat we'll move onto beef and lentil, chicken and veg, irish stew, that kind of thing for the main meal.

Once he can eat yoghurt (8mo I think) we will add that in as a regular meal option too.

19-12-2008, 21:09
Aspen has had rice cereal with EBM, pears, apples, pumpkin, sweet potato, weetbix(1/4 bix with EBM) and a couple of the raffertys garden mixes.

Just a question what do you guys mix with your sweet potato as mine was a bit gluggy?

Alisonp
19-12-2008, 21:15
I usually mix veges with just a bit of boiled water from the jug.

I forgot to add before also, Henry is now having 2 meals per day....usually lunch and dinner but still only 2 tablespoons.

He seems to have put on heaps of weight this month. Not sure if is the solids or the fact he is still waking all night long :o

Miss Lily is loving the solids she has rice cereal with either apples, pears for breakfast lunch is fruit with baby yogurt (just started the last couple of days) or just fruit on it's own dinner is vegies either pumpkin, carrot, sweet potato, broccoli sometimes I will mix a couple together !!! She obviously was ready as she gobbles it all down and it still having about 5 BF a day so she is going really well at the moment and her little legs are starting to get a little bit of chunk on them they are not so tiny anymore but then again I guess she is now 5 1/2 months where has the time gone

Hi Gals

just wanting to know whether bubs poos routine change/comes back to normal?

Since i started aleesha on solids, she has started doing slightly loose poos... every time i change her nappy...and especially after a solids(farex) meal.Isit normal....will she ever be back on her normal twice a day schedule....

Alisonp
24-12-2008, 10:27
Alabama - Is she teething at the moment? I wouldn't have thought something as simple and bland as rice cereal would cause loose poos? Henry had a bit of loose poo after his first try of banana but he is OK now although I usually only give it too him as the fruit in his rice cereal so not as strong.

Henry usually does his poos in the afternoon or just randomly. This hasn't really changed since starting solids although he goes more often now than before.

I hope that helps.

Mahjong
24-12-2008, 10:30
I agree, I think she's cutting some teeth Alabama, DS' poos weren't that bad on Rice Cereal either. His nappies up until the other day were feral for 2 weeks, but he cut 2 teeth, once they popped he returned to normal.

Does anyone find their bub's getting bored with plain/flavourless foods? Deacon is and Im in need of some ideas LOL

Hi AmyLou,

Yes every 3 days is right, most ppl say to start on Rice Cereal then after 3 days add some apple or Pears i usually mix the fruit in with the Rice Cereal, but Jessica loves pears and apples on their own too.
The reason behind adding Apple or Pear next is to avoid constipation (Rice Cereal can bound them up a bit if given too much for too long).
Good Luck... solids is fun (watching their facial reaction to foods, but not the nappy end of it!!)

Hey Amylou,
Yeah im starting Mia on tinnned apples at lunch time. I started her on rice cereal three days ago and people have told me i should go with apples or pears next like tlsmum2b said to avoid constipation.
I just bought a couple of tinned jars of apples from heinz.
I have also heard to introduce new foods round lunchish so if they have a reaction to it you will be awake to see it.
Hope that helps chick :)
But really i know just as much as you, im just going off what other people have told me to do

I started Amira on solids at 4months. I started Amira because i got sick off her father sticking every kind of food in her mouth.. She loved them tho.
I started her on Apple,Pear, puree and Farax.
i tryed making it myself and Amira still to this hates everything i cook.
Amira loves Lamb and vegies and the chicken, noodles and veges but only from about 6months she loves alll the the custard too,
i Kinda rushed amira and gave her something new every couple of days. i still try her on new things but she isnt to interested.
She also like sucking and chewing on steak.
Amira loves Chicken meat and the creamy pasta salad you get from the deli and the cheese singles . DP always gives Amira some of what his eating no matter what it is and she seems to look having the same as us.its just when i make her something new she wont have a bar of it..
She also like Arrowroot biscults and the Heinz baby rice crackers.

Haha....it's so interesting to hear that so many little ones are starting solids at 4 months. Big relief. EJ had problems with her bowels when I was BF her and it was recommended that I give her formula :( Bit disappointing but she is much happier.

About 5 weeks ago she started chewing on anything in her reach and launching herself at any food DF and I were eating. At that stage I gave her a little bit of pureed apple, spinach and sweet potato (she loved it all but did stick her fingers in her mouth while she tried to work out the new texture - MESSY! :p). I waited for about a week after that before giving her any more solids...I've tried her on Farex, pureed fruits and veges and baby custard (not good results with the custard) and waited about a week each time before giving it to her again.

My main reason for not feeding her too many solids is that she is also one of those babies who just likes to eat and at 4 1/2 months she is already 8kg (double her birth weight!). Nurses said I have to cut down her feeds and give her water instead. :(
