The private hospital was probably full, it happens a lot so they have no choice other then to send patients to the nearet hospital with beds.

:hugs:I hope he gets better soon.

If there are no beds available then there are no beds so they are well within their rights to send patients away.

I hope your FIL gets better soon.

Tyrah - it sounds like your FIL needs to be in the emergency department anyway, of which Private Hospitals dont usually have one. He should be at a public hospital where they can look after his health issues and he can always be there as a private patient.

Hi Clairesmum, the emergency department must have been on 'Bypass', which is when either the department or the hospital is full and they have no beds left. Its often frustrating, but the public system isn't all so bad, especially when it comes to emergency situation like your FIL. Generally things move a bit faster in the public system in emergency situations. Best wishes to your FIL and family.

I hope your FIL is doing ok. A hip replacement is worring enough but blood clots near the lungs must be very worrysome.

My Mum is a nurse in a public hospital and they often will get patients who have been turned away from Private Hospitals.
On occassion some of the patients have expected to be seen sooner, have their ops done etc as they are private patients but unfortunately it cant be done and you more or less are in line like everyone else.

Public Hospitals are fine and I'm glad your MIL feels as if more is being done there :)
I hope your FIL recovers soon

As the others have said they definatley can do this if they don't have the staff/facility to treat him at the time. I'd hate to see them admit someone when they didn't have the resources to look after them.

If you do have complaints about the treatment he received while in the hosp there are people to call, one being the Health Rights Commission on 1800 077 308.

In anycase, you may even find that your FIL will be best treated with a happy medium. Private treatment in a public facility. Means the public hosp will be paid more for his admission, and if they are able to they will TRY to give him special treatment (some off TV free, newspapers, better (delux) meals etc.

Good Luck though!
