Timid child

My grandson is 3 and I have noticed when he is with other children he is very timid and lets them take toys off him and will get off any play equipment if he sees another child approaching, how can I teach him to be more assertive without becoming aggressive.

My three year old is much the same. He will also back off if there are kids around who are bigger than he is or if he thinks they're too rough for him he will move away and play on his own.
I'm still not sure myself of how to help him stand up for himself. My sister took the stand when her daughter was being hit at day care by one of the other kids, to teach her to hit back. But I don't allow my son to hit back.

My 9 year old sister is the same. I think it is all about them being shy. I ask her why she does this but she just says "because i dont care" but really you can see how much she really wants to play..she just cant get enough confidence in herself to. She is Ok with her best friends but when its other children she doesnt know..thats when her shyness really comes out & she will let them walk all over her..its sad really.
