How do you guys breastfeed?
I'm finding I dont seem to be attatching Ollie right. He's fine when my breasts are FULL of a morning, I hear him gulping away, so I know he's getting food. But later in the evening when I'm tired ect...I cant seem to get him on right. He will suck for an hour and then scream cause he's still hungry. Last night we offered him some expressed milk after he had been sucking for about an hour and he drank 100ml!
I dont think I'm getting him on right because sometimes he squishes my nipples. But they told me at the hospital that if they dont have hollowed out cheeks and their jaw and temples are working they are on right....he never has the hollow cheeks and his jaw and temple always work.
Any help would be good!

Your supply isnt as good of an afternoon if i remember rightly. Also alot of bubs feed constantly or cluster feed of an evening. Its tiring i know, i'm still bf & my daughter will be 1 on thursday.

Man, I wrote a huge response to this thread before then my computer stuffed up!
I did say exactly as Rainbowbrite said though that most mother's find their milk to be at the lowest in the afternoon.
Is the breastfeeding painful at all? If it is the attachment is not correct, but if it is not painful or uncomfy etc the attachment should be fine.
Some babies prefer to be lazy drinkers too and don't like having to work for their milk and bottle feeding does not really make them work at all which is why you will find bub drank 100ml cause it was easy! My DS was the same he would love the foremilk as it just flowed out but when it came to the hindmilk where he had to really suck for it he would get frustrated etc.

you need to get yourself to a cactation consultant NOW before your supply dwindles too much... Elise is one soon too (friday) and im still feeding her and there is nothing wrong with my supply. A lactation consultant can answer all your questions for you and help with attachment.
The Austalian Breast Feeding Assoc is great (im a member) they have a 7 day Helpline the number is 3844 8166 and 3844 8977
if the phone numbers get deleted just pm me and ill get the number back to you ASAP

Oh, it's difficult isn't it!
The Australia Breastfeeding Association website has some useful links to help you get your latch correct.

I agree with the other PP's, that in the pm and evening your supply is often low. Remember increased demand = increased supply, therefore feed as often as you can, 2-3 hourly if poss.
It is important that the latch is correct though!
I actually agree with everyone else above however I saw a lactation consultant about this when I was bf DD. It turns out that she was feeding fine but using my nipple for non-nutrative sucking (basically as a dummy). I noticed her latching on was different when she did this. Its common at that time of day for bubs to be unsettled, which is why she wanted to do it and why she screamed when I took her off the boob. My lactation consultant said that although supply is lower in the late afternoon and evening it is very rare for the supply to be too low as breastmilk is so dynamic.
However, I would suggest you see someone as it could be one of a hundred other reasons and its really important to make sure that you are not one of the few women who struggle to produce later in the day.
Good luck

I find it really helpful in the PM time of day to nurse Liam whilst lying down. He's at the age where he latches on, sucks for a second, and pulls off. When he is lying down, I cuddle him close and he stays latched on for longer.

Thanks for all the advice guys!
He's being a little ratbag lately with feeding, he latches on, sucks for a minute, pulls off and pulls a face at me. Or he pulls his head back and pushes off with his arms, while keeping my nipple firmly attatched with his suction! OUCH! :o
But I have figured alot of the time when he is still crying when i put him to bed its just cause he's bored! Obviously he didnt get the memo that says babies are suppost to only be up an hour at maximum in the first 8 weeks! He likes to be up about an hour and a half. An hour to feed and change, and half an hour to play! :)
