I was just wondering how problems with dairy present in young babies. My DD is a very cranky little baby through the day and I noticed it was particularly bad the morning after I had drunk a lot of milk. I have since cut out all dairy for 24 hours and have not noticed any significant change. So to my next question, how long would it take to get out of my system? She's an angel through the night and only wakes once for a feed.
Anyone have any ideas?:)

I've been told that milk production peaks in the morning, so perhaps DD is getting more foremilk in the morning and the lactose is building up (foremilk contains more lactose). We had this problem when DS was about 6 weeks.

That said, I also find that the more dairy I have the more it affects DS, mainly with a stuffy nose (when I have more dairy my sinuses get all claggy, so it appears he might have the same problem).

Dairy contains a lot of hormones and proteins that really aren't suitable for humans. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that any baby is sensitive to it. As adults we have it but our bodies have built up a tolerance to it.

Thanks for that, very interesting.
I find it so hard not to eat dairy foods, I love dairy.:o
I'll see how it goes, I have to go to the GP on Thursday anyway, so I'll see what he thinks too.:)

HL - check out this thread:
lactose intolerance (http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/showthread.php?t=11731) as it has good links to a very helpful article on the subject. The author of the article is a lactation consultant here in Brisbane and has helped 2 of my friends diagnose their children as being intolerant to cow milk protein rather than lactose.

My little one is one of the babies referred to by Draught above *waves above in the manner of the Brady Bunch to Draught*.

Looking back she started showing signs of an intolerance well before I realised there was a problem.

The crankiness was a big sign because her gut was spasming from the reaction to the cow's milk protein, and causing her pain. It affected the position in which she started putting herself to feed, how she fed on the nipple (it became like a bungy cord concept), she arched her back & generally threw herself around despite whatever I did to help it.

And then I noticed that her poos were just becoming watery rushes with mucous in them.

My GP stuck to the party line that this was lactose intolerance after we did the sugar reduction test on her poo. When I did some more research though it was clear that lactose intolerance is excessively rare in infants, and in fact they need lactose for brain development.

I have cut cow's milk protein from my diet and within days I had a calmer baby. Her gut took nearly 2 months to heal - but she was diagnosed at 5 months and had a great deal of damage.

I too loved dairy - and unfortunately my excessive consumption may well have overloaded her system and caused the intolerance to be aggravated.

Definitely worth monitoring and doing some reading on the area.

Mamma Mia and Elissisa- sounds like an allergic reaction to the protein found in dairy products.

My son is allergic too and gets very congested/mucusy when exposed to dairy.
Its also related to allergic rhinitis(which my son has as well)

He too was a very unsettled bub coz of this (very chucky, whingey and unsettled sleeper)

I went on the elimination diet (as well as eliminating dairy)while bfing and saw a dramatic change in bubs behaviour/personality.

E- chat with your gp and see what they say, hope Amelia feels better soon:hugs:

i am a cheeze addict and while pregnant craved dairy big time, strange, cause i never could tolerate it before. after the birth, i kept eating it but bub cannot handle it at all. he would be REALLY gassy and you could hear his belly rumbling. he went from no poos to runny poos and the cranky hour was the screaming 4 hours!!!!

i stopped all dairy for four days and he was calm then ate heaps and that day and the next, i had a feral baby again. so no more dairy for me:(

the four day thing is good, cause you will get a reaction from them and be pretty sure what they are sensetive to
