We went to Airlie last year and stayed here http://www.boathavenresort.com.au/
Was just lovely.. We had 3 kids are the time and the youngest was 20 months..
I personally didn't find Airlie a family place but that was more because of all thebackpackers and the night life.. It is a beautiful place though..
Cape Hillsborough near Mackay is just gorgeous.. We camped there and loved it..

We stayed in Port Douglas, without DD and absolutely loved the place. So much to do there. I want to go back....
If you are hiring a car you can drive to Mossman Gorge, Daintree, take the train up to Karunda (sp?) or go on the sky lifts, take a boat trip out to one of the islands or on the reef.
We stayed at Radisson Treetops Resort. We knew of about 4 other couples that had stayed there too.
Good luck and hope you end up somewhere beautiful.

Well i am going with my mum and ds to PD just after xmas.
We are staying at Port Douglas Queenslander.
Wherever you go i found an amazing website that has reviews from real travellers on most hotels, tours etc.
It is tripadvisor.com.au.
I REALLY recommend you checking it out.
Hey Megan!
There are some really nice places around Mackay. Nice beaches and if you go inland there are some nice places aswell.
Also, the Atherton Tablelands are really nice.
All depends on if you want to stay on the coast or go inland.
:iagree:Sara the Atherton Tabelands are absolutely beautiful... And if you would like a varied holiday you could always turn at the Innisfail turn off and head up there, you go through Milla Milla and Malanda before you get to Atherton, and then you could head through to Mareeba (there is an African Safari Zoo there as well) and up to Kuranda then through to Port Douglas and always back through Cairns (especially for some retail therapy)... Then you will get the whole experience... Very scenic drive and plenty of places to stop on the way with bubs...
And accomodation in Atherton is relatively cheap and they have quite a few nice bed & breakfast's... And then if you book ahead now for Port Douglas you could get relatively priced accomadation (Sunday would be the best day in Port, markets and live local bands, good lil shops all open)....
Goodluck... Kat

Have we helped any Megan?
I'm after some advice and tips as well. We're coming up to Cairns for a few days just before X mas. Now, I'm after some things to see/ to do with our boys, they're 4 and 2 years old and very, very active.
Are there any good beaches around? Or pools with slides or good playgrounds?
Or any Zoo's, Mueseums or something like that for kids?
We'll have a car, so we're also looking around for some day trips in the Area.
Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks :)

It all depends how far you want to travel from Cairns Coffee.
Google these places.
Kuranda - take the train there or the sky rail
Cairns Wildlife Safari
Green Island - you can go on a day tour over to the island. Snorkeling, glass bottom boats, semi-submersibles etc.
Cairns Wildlife Dome
Port Douglas Zoo
Sugar World - like a water park
Atherton - Crystal Caves - the kids will love this one.
That's all I can think of for now.
There are plenty of nice swimming spots to visit for a short drive. Go to the parks and wildlife website and look them up.
Make sure you do the tree top rail thing, thats really nice.
Thanks so much for the Tips, Mummy2Phoenix.
I think, with the boys we probably could travel a max of 3 to 4 hours in the car. No idea how far or where that would get us.
Also not sure, if we do day trips every day or just being around Cairns mostly.
But def. will look the places up.
Kuranda sounds great, same as sugar world. They boys love anything that has to do with water..
Im not sure how much there is to do at Cairns other than adventure stuff we usually go there to go shopping, there is a nice swimming area near the water in the main part of Cairns..maybe look at their tourist info on the net... there are places not that far away...
Sara sorry i didnt reply I didnt notice more posts... We are actually spending the few days at Maggie Island now with DH's family but Im going to look into all these other places for next time now I know about them!!
