Day of Unity and Action - “Great Expectations”

Women of Victoria EXPECT Great maternity reform!
Host:Maternity Coalition Victoria

‘Great Expectations’: The Future of Maternity Care in Australia

You may be aware, that Minister for Health, Nicola Roxon has recently announced a review into Australian maternity services. Consumer groups across the country are very pleased that the Minister has listened and understands the need for improvements.

The benefits of the care of a known midwife throughout, pregnancy labour and birth are well documented, they include reductions in surgery, increased rates and duration of breastfeeding, reduction in post natal depression, greater maternal satisfaction.

Midwifery care incorporates clinical assessment and monitoring within a social framework, this model has considerable capacity to improve health and related outcomes for Indigenous women and those at risk.

The cost of maternity care has risen significantly. Obstetricians have increased their fees by 269% since the Medicare Safety-net was introduced in 2004. While midwives are educated and registered to provide the entire carriage of care for healthy women (approx 75%) a lack of funding and indemnity insurance still prevents this. It is estimated that around 1% of midwives work to their registered capacity.

Maternity Coalition is uniting the women of Australia to support Minister Roxon’s work and seeks support from politicians across the country. Maternity Coalition is hosting community events across the country. There is considerable media interest.

On Sunday 16 November families from across Victoria will meet in Treasury Gardens from 2pm.

Please come and hear from women across the state regarding the current broken maternity system and how 1-2-1 community midwifery will transform services in both regional and metropolitan areas.

Should you be unable to attend would you please consider sending a message of support, because in someway birth affects us all.

Anyone else coming along tomorrow?
Please come show your support for change.

Chelle...my whole family is coming so sure you will spot us :-) I guess they will have a stage or something set up as I know they are getting media etc along, never been to something like this so not really sure what to expect.

I've just had a interview to join local advisory committee to do with community health so that's another avenue for anyone wanting to take the next step forward in actually being heard and having input. These are always advertised but you just google your local health board and see what's available for consumers and or professionals.

I just wanted to say I know what they mean about obstertricians putting up their fees since the medicare safety net came in. When I had DS 1 in 2004 my ob charged $1800 (for everything, including delivery etc) when I had DD 2 last year his fee had gone up to $2500 whilst I am glad we used his services as he is a great doctor and I did enjoy my 6 day holiday at Peninsula Private in Frankston I was really shocked by the price hike!!! I am planning number 3 and have already started saving just so we can afford our ob's fees
