Ok wasnt sure where to put this so i hope this is fine.
Just wondering how many of you had to pay for your bubs 18th week ultrasound? I had to pay $130 for Summer's one & booked in for the new bubs 18th week one & found out i have to pay $170  Im booked in at the redlands hospital in cleveland & they dont do ultrasounds there. I dont know how im going to pay it .. i have soo many things that need to be paid now this is just another to add to the list. ?? Did anyone else have to pay & if yes..how much?

I had to pay for all mine.
They were around the same price you have paid. If i remember correctly i think i got about $60 back.
I had to pay $180 also for the 18wk scan and then another $15 to have it put on video for us.
I was doing shared care between the hospital and my GP which is why i had to pay.

I too am doing shared care! and don't pay! I think it depends on where you go for the ultrasound!

I had to pay $155 for each of my ultrasounds (4) and I only got $51 back from Medicare.

I paid $170 each for my first two ultrasounds (got about $60 back from Medicare per scan). I had to have a scan at 32 weeks (placental abnormality) and because it was an additional scan, they only charged me $130 (still got back about $60). I've also had a few scans at my OB's office which have no extra charge. They're not as accurate and are really just used to check position of bub etc.

I wish my GP had an US machine in her room, I'd love to get those extra chances to see my babies.

I had to pay for all of my ultrasounds. The 13 week one cost about $210 and I got about 100 back, the 20 week one cost about $180 and I think I got about $80 back or something ike that.
My obs has an ultrasound machine in his room but he has only ever done 1 ultrasound which was at my first appointment at 10 weeks - just to confirm the pregnancy I guess. I think a lot of them dont like to do too many ultrasounds unless there is a problem.
There are quite a few ultrasound laces in Brisbane that bulk bill - Southern xray near Mt Gravatt does.. you have to shop around to find the bulk billing ones. Once you have a referral from the doctor, you can use that referral with any ultrasound place as far as I know. best bet is to ring around a few places to see if they bulk bill

Dumb question probably...........but what is shared care? Doesn't everyone either go to a GP or gyno??

A GP will not deliver the baby so you will do shared care with the hospital so majority of the appts are with the GP but a few will be at the hospital.;)

Oh okay, ta. I saw a GP the entire time with all my pregnancies. The only time I stepped foot inside the hospital was when I gave birth.
Isnt it really odd, that everyone has had to pay differently!! I havent had to pay for any ultrasounds this pregnancy, I had them at the hospital and medicare cover the 18 weeks scan. I had to have a follow up 4 weeks later, and still that didnt cost me a penny!
The only time I have ever had to pay for an ultrasound, was when I was booked in at a private ultrasound place, when I was preggers with Jordan, and I only had to pay $50. I thought that was abit rich!!!

Would you believe that the hospital where my kids were born doesn't HAVE an ultrasound machine??!!!! All my kids needed renal scans after birth but I hadd to take them to a radiology place and pay $155 because the hospital couldn't do it.
i had to pay for my first one with dd. think it was about $150 got alot back but. with this bub i didnt have to pay for the 18 week scan. im doing shared care between my obs and midwives, mainly all appointments are with midwives but. (obs says they have more time than him lol)

I can't believe that any mum should pay for ultrasounds!! Isn't it one of lifes necessities? I am pregnant with my second bub and have 2 free ultrasounds, at 12 weeks then at 18 weeks. I go through share care with my gp and with the gold coast hosp. My first appt with them will be around the 25 week mark. My sister is in toowoomba and isn't too sure of her dates so has to pay for the first ultrasound but gets the 18 week one free. You think it would all be the same!

I'm having a 6 1/2 week (hopefully) dating scan this coming Friday.
My GP sent me to the ultrasound place, I didn't even think to ask if I'd have to pay, am just assuming it's free.
Maybe it's not??
I work in admin radiology and get asked this q everyday - never assume that and radiology procedure is free (eg - CT scan, ultrasounds, x-rays, MRI's, PET's etc). Most private radiology companies (those not in public hospitals) charge private fees. They can also set their own fees but the medicare rebate does not differ.
Quite often your referring DR can request that you be bulk billed or have arrangements with particular branches although this is becoming less available as the medicare rebate does not increase very much each year for radiology.
People often think radiology is very expensive for the 20min scan they are part off but do not realise the work that goes on that they do not see to finalise their results and also the cost of the equipment needed.
Alot of radiology billing is controlled by medicare (what they will and won't rebate) such as they nuchal translucency aka first trimester or 12 week scan, this is not rebated at all except for the few who do meet medicare criteria.
Whenever having any radiology procedure is is always best to ask for an estimate cost first, especially if the practice is not in or attached to a public hospital.
Hope I haven't rambled to much.
Also (couldn't work out how to quote)
"I can't believe that any mum should pay for ultrasounds!! Isn't it one of lifes necessities?" (bubbalucy)
We do have a great medical system compared to other countries but yes it does still let us down. I also find it hard asking cancer patients (who sometimes have a couple of scans per week) to pay $100's each time. Some peoples medical costs get so high they organise payment schedules with us (if no bosses are around I usually just bulk bill them anyway):D

Our local hospital can't do US's, x-rays, casts, deliver babies or anything, it's really only a first aid kit and a nursing home for elderly patients.

I am in the public system and had a video and photos taken in an ultrasound but had my normal bulk billed ultrasounds. I call it the entertainment ultrasound was $255 couldn't claim any of it, pretty expensive just to put in a scrapbook though.

i have all my antenatal care at the hospital coz they have a specialised unit for young mums 21 and under.i see the same midwife each visit and depending on how busy the dr is the same dr when i need to see the dr for antenatal care. i had the same type of care for when i was preg with DS and i chose to do it the same way this time
I went to ROYAL NORTH SHORE HOSPITAL in SYDNEY and i had to pay $80 per ultasound. When i lived in England nobody had to pay for ultrasounds, I still don't think they have to. How come we do??

I don't think you can get an U/S in Sydney for under $200. Private healthcare in this city (along with a lot of other things) is such a rip off.

You should start a new thread on this hun, because it might not be seen in this one :) I'm not sure myself.
My public hospital doesnt have any appointments left... so I'm paying $230!!! to go to the same place that did my NT scans for $154.....
Its not cheap, but when you have no option... you have no option.
Hopefully the rebate is half decent!
