i have just recieved another invoice from my university for the S&A fee, for second semester 2006! they have invoiced us in May to get around the new legislation that would prohibit them from charging compulsary fees after June 1.
HOW BLOODY RUDE!
if i had the money to take them to court i would!

i think i might have to write a nasty letter to the guild about soliciting money from poor parents LOL
the dumb thing is, we got a letter from them saying that there would be changes to the invoicing system for the year because of the new legislation, but they never actually said what the changes were!

As long as you are not using any of the union-subsidised resources eg child-care?

well, i got my reply, and the hon. christopher ellison says:
the volluntary student unionism provisions un the "higher education support act 2003" (HESA) will have the effect of prohibiting compulsary student union and amenities fees for students who commence studies on or after 1 july 2006 and were not enrolled with their higher education provider for an earlier provider in 2006. students who enroll for a full year in 2006 may continue under previous arrangements for the full year. the government decided to implement this arrangement as a result of late passage of the legislation and to give universities time to implement voluntary student unionism.
higher education providers are entitled to determine their own enrollment policies, provided they treat students fairly and take other requirements of HESA into account. for students studying before 1 july 2006, providers may charge a compulsary fee for the full year.
so there you go. my uni is just wierd - they didnt have to change anything, except for students who didnt enroll for semester 1. go figure.
