View Full Version : Costs of an abortion?

I'm not pregnant, but if I were to fall pregnant right now, it would probably be the best choice for me.

Being the kind of person who likes to think ahead and have a plan ready just in case (in any situation really), I'm curious as to what costs are involved in an abortion?

Not an abortion for medical reasons... but an abortion because I simply am not ready to have another baby. That kind of abortion.

I was thinking about it the other day... if I were to fall pregnant, would I even have enough money to get an abortion? Would I instead have to keep the baby in there until I raised the money, or is it funded by medicare... or what?

Any answers would be much appreciated... it's more about curiosity and forward planning, than needing advice and support... as this isn't something I'm actually dealing with, but something which COULD (god forbid) need to be dealt with in the future.

Also - how would you go about having one? Who would you talk to?

I'm quite embarrassed that I don't already know any of this... :o:p

I don't know anything about it either. But I'd see a GP to find out what to do.

How much will it cost?

In Australia Medicare pays for the abortion, however there is a separate charge for your theatre fee.
This fee varies from clinic to clinic; also it depends of how far pregnant you are.
For example, if you are under 11 weeks, the approximate costs will be between $350 and $550, however if your are over 11 weeks it will cost more than this, because as each week progresses, the procedure takes longer, the risks increase, and it is more complicated. You will be quoted a fee after a confirmed ultrasound is done.
Women without a medicare card can expect to pay approximately $950 and extra for any pathology required on the day.

Contraception isn't always 100 percent effective, I am sure she is already being responsible and doing that.
Do you have a concession/health care card as well?

The later you have one the more expensive it is. You would be looking at anything $300 up. Some places offer 'student discounts' which is just lovely, don't know if that applies to you?

Medicare fund all the necessary costs - surgery/theatre fees, "equipment" - the money charged on top of that is all profit to the abortionist.

So yes, it is medicare funded but you will have to pay more on top of that. Shop around.

Also it depends on what state you are in.

If you are not in Victoria or the ACT, you will need a suitable reason for termination. The laws vary.

First port of call is usually the GP but at some clinics you can make your first consultation with them - most abortionists want a referall from a doctor with confirmed pregnancy etc.

Mine cost $300ish none of it was covered by medicare.

Stacey if you ever find your self in this situation (fingers crossed you dont) I can give you the name of a clinic in Bowen Hills that does them, or the name of a private OB that also does them at the Brisbane Private Hospital as Day surgery. The day surgery, part of it would be covered by private health hospital cover. if you had it as you are admitted as a patient.

Could you go to a GP and ask about the IUD or something?

Just so much better for you then having to go through an abortion.

I am totally pro choice but I think it should not be a forward plan for a just in cae IYKWIM.

Contraception isn't always 100 percent effective,While that's true, using a combination of the pill and condoms, or getting mirena and using condoms makes the chance of pregnancy incredibly small.

If you are unaware of costs etc, I would also be researching the procedure, side effects and what they will actually do to you (and your 'fetus')

I support the womans choice to have an abortion 100%.

I dont support it beng used as contraception. I really dont. It makes a mockery of the whole idea.

Its not just whatit is its thefact that you have to have an operation, it can be dangerous..and its expensive.

Go see your Gp ...contraception and maybe even trying to know your cycle really well, is better then putting your body through that.

Wow this thread has really gone off on a ridiculous tangent.

There is nothing wrong with finding out about something you know nothing about. Finding out where you would go and what you would do....

I'm sorry this thread has just become an excuse for people to impose their own opinions on the issue

I'm sure that Stacey uses adequate contraception and is not using an abortion as a form of contraception. Its been established that the question was posted in the wrong section, it is no here, so could we keep the posts on topic and to the question that was asked ladies :)

I don't see the problem. Sassy's not 'planning' an abortion - she's educating herself about her options. If she were in here asking how an abortion was performed, pro-lifers would be happily supplying information in great detail. They'd be applauding her for getting the facts beforehand. That's what education is about.

I agree. Im not against abortion but I do think its a bit unfair to just let yourself get pregnant. If you dont want a another baby make sure your using protection.
You wont need to find out all this info if you just protect yourself. Ive never have an abortion but I sure as hell wouldnt like to have one. They can be a ver emotinal rollercoaster. Even having it done for all the right reasons can affect you. Just protect yourself its the best thing.

As for price, Its free of cost before 8-10weeks. Just go to you nearest public hospital. After 10weeks it can range from 200+ depending on how far you are. I was about 16 weeks and was considering having it done, and it was going to cost around $460. Having changed my mind was the best thing ive ever done. I simply was stupid to just let my self fall pregnant then was like "Oh, shyt, I dont want a kid' I felt I should keep her, as I should have been more careful if I wreally didnt want a baby.

If you dont want to have another baby, just definately use protection. You dont want that stress and sadness.:hugs:

Wow... to think a simple question about the costs and who to contact could turn into some sort of "tsk tsk" thread... jeez.

Just for those of you who suggested contraception... I am on it. I have been since I've been having sex. However, I could try everything and nothing is 100%... and after feeling a bit sick a few weeks back, and worrying about the possibility of pregnancy... I had these questions in the back of my mind.

What if I HAD been pregnant? I would not have known where to go - and getting these answers NOW seems like a better option than to get them later. That way, I'd know exactly what avenue to take, how much I'd be up for, and wouldn't have to suffer anti-abortion attitudes whilst going through a hard time.

OF COURSE it would be horrible thing to go through... it wouldn't be my choice no matter what, but I do not feel that having another baby now, or soon, would do anything but lessen the quality of life myself, my boyfriend, and my daughter have... and thus would probably opt for an abortion. Of course, I would discuss this issue with him were the situation to arise... but a little bit of knowledge on the issue before it's needed isn't going to hurt.

So please... take your judgements about me elsewhere. Asking a simple question, giving no direct details, doesn't mean that I'm planning to get pregnant so I can have an abortion... it doesn't mean I'm not taking precautions to prevent pregnancy, and it doesn't mean that I'd go through an abortion without so much as an ounce of emotion.

FWIW, I posted this in the pregnancy section, as I didn't know if it was appropriate to post in the terminations section... apparently it is, and so I'm sorry if you were at all offended by me posting it in the general pregnancy section.

Thank you so much to those who answered my question.
