Hi all.. looking for some advice from some mummies out there.

My 3 yr old has been booked in for some bloods and urines tomorrow,

Symtoms:
* 2 'passing' out episodes in the past week
* frequent urination
* very thirsty - like screaming for drink (water even)
* really hungry
* very tired all the time - falling asleep in car, watching telly, sitting at daycare etc
* and grumpy grumpy grumpy (but hey she is 3)

Dr is testing for Diabetes.

I am just checking if maybe anyone out there knows anything about this? Or if there s any other virus or ANYTHING else that fits this symptom list??

Any advise would help feeling a little 'mummy panic' going on here.

Thanks

sorry i don't have any advice. My niece was diagnosed with type1 diabeties when she was 2 1/3years old she had all the same symptoms you discribed except the passing out. I really hope the tests come back negative for diabetes its not a nice thing for anyone to have to live with.
:hugs: good luck tomorrow :hugs:

Well we came back inconclusive??? But i have 'dr googled' :rolleyes: (I know) and it says you can't get a false negative so I take that as a good sign. So not Type 1 .... dr wants to retest in a fortnight to make sure though if symptoms are still present

Dr says that tests came back with Glucose in the path urine but not in the urine on the day - so that is ok (something about a glucose leak??) and the bloods showed high sugar for a fasting test but still within the normal range. He was expecting something in the 200-300 range due to her symptoms. So he has asked us to keep a food/ fluid diary urine output diary for a fortnight and go back then. (unless we have a dramatic turn in events)

We have also had a more of the blackout/vaugueout things... Dr suggested that we should also investigate epilepsy as well.

At the moment it is a bit of a sit and wait... still hoping it is a comboof a virus and a growth spurt...

Honestly - apart from eating like a horse, drinking like a camel, sleeping and the vaguing out things she seems fine.. just not 100%. I really don't know?????

Hi Imogensmum

I know EXACTLY what you are going through. Over the past 2 months, my daughter (born Feb 2006) was very lethargic, weeing a lot, drinking about 6L per day, and she wasnt herself. (Her urine sample taken on the 20th October came back with a sugar of 20, and even then the doctor said it wasnt urgent that she was seen by a paediatrician)

She was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on the 24th October (1 day before she was 2 yrs 8 months)

Life has been a major change for me (and her) over the past few weeks. I have had to change her diet, I have to inject her with insulin 4 times per day, and do finger pricks 8+ times per day.

I was very annoyed as the doctors refused to listen to the symptoms, and do the simple finger prick to check (there is a history of diabetes in her fathers side of the family, so we knew something was wrong)

When she was FINALLY admitted to hospital, her blood sugars were at 30+ (normal in a child is 5-12) and she was very close to death. (Her body was eating the fat cells to try and get some energy for her)

Keep at it, you know your child best (I am annoyed with myself for letting the doctors ignore it for so long)

If you want to ask me any questions please ask. I am no pro with this subject, but the information provided to me by the diabetes educators has proved to be very helpful.

Good luck
Cath

Hello again.. thanks to all the responses :)

Well we have been into hospital for a stay - as Imy had a 15min unconsious/blackout/seizure at daycare. Scary times I must say...

So we are now sure that she is not Type 1 - her levels do not get high enough - she does get big drops in suger - but apparently this can happen in fairly slim built child (doesn't get that from me :p ) So She is on a low GI diet - with frequent snacks to minimise the drops.

She has been put onto an anti-epileptic drug to stop the seizures - but still no answer from anyone about why she is having these seizures!! Waiting for my paed appoint in January... seems very far away:(

Also had Imy's hearing tested yesterday - as when we were in hospital I mentioned that Imy had said she had a 'no hearing' ear and that was new - and it turns out she has severe hearing loss in her right ear:confused: So we are doing some more tests Monday - t check the degree and see if it is nerve damage or the little bones in the ears, and then going from there!

I feel like all I am doing at the moment is moaning - and I know we are really very lucky that Imy is not unwell, sick, in pain etc... I just feel frustrated at teh lack of answers!!! (sorry for the moan :ecomcity:)

With the low Blood sugar levels DD is the same its such a nightmare, what does she drop to and how often do you check it and whats her base line

Not sure if you know but adding corn flour to feeds ( formular) as its a slow release carb can help maintain BSL if you want some info on it let me know

How is your DDs BSL managed, with my little one she is on 24 hours contiuos feeds if we take her of for an hour she will drop to 3 and any longer 2 and then 1 its very scary
