Hi, I would like to warn any parents that have attended a recent Parent Baby and Children's Expo in Melbourne and purchased AVENT dummies that were sold from the sale box at the AVENT expo outlet.

I have purchased these dummies for my daughter which were sold in packs of two. I have given the dummy to my baby and after being in her mouth for about 10 - 15 minutes the rubber in the dummy split and basically disintegrated in her mouth. These dummies were made from rubber not the silicon . I am horrified as my baby could have choked to death if I didn't realised what have happend
Upon inspection of the second dummy , the rubber also fell apart by splitting and shearing off from the base of the dummy . All it took is me gently pulling on the rubber!!!!
I have purchased 2 boxes and also inspected the second box and the same thing happend.
Whoever bought these dummies at the expo please take them away from your baby!! It is a health hazard and could possibly kill your child!!!
I have since found out AVENT no longer manufacture or sell Rubber dummies only the sillicine so I have no idea why these were sold at the expo!!! The dummies must be so old and that explains why they have disinegrated in my baby's mouth only after a few minutes!!!!

The scary thing is they were selling these for $ 1 and they were selling like hot cakes being so cheap as we all know Avent dummies are pricey. So there must be so many people out there not aware their child might be in danger.
Please spread the word and warn other parents!! I have contacted Avent and are working on reporting this issue further.

That is odd.

But you will find that the packet will instruct you to inspect and pull the nipple before giving it to bub each time.

That really is a shame, I would be in contact with Avent personally requesting a good explanation as to why those dummies were sold at all.

Yes I absolutely agree and I would normally check it but with a screaming baby I just quickly put it in her mouth and only realised after she spat it out. I would have never expected that from a brand new dummy that just came out of the packet! Most new parents would probably do the same though and that's why I' m so worried . It just shows how vigilant we must be and inspect anything and everything before giving it to a young baby whether it is old or new. I am very dissapointed as Avent is such well known and trusted company and these soothers were sold directly from them at the expo and not from a retail shop. So they had a good reason for selling these " on sale " for only $ 1 per pack. I'm just glad I have my daughter still with me!!

I honestly find sometimes that the bigger companies do lose sight of a certain degree of responsibility and ethics.

Don't blame yourself, the best parent forgets sometimes.

The blame belongs solely on Avent.

Like I said, I would be following up with them, writing an angry but explanatory email requesting to know WHY a defective low-quality item was sold for babies.

I have contacted Avent and they offered to replace the faulty dummies???!!!! All I received was an apology , asked me to send the faulty dummies back to them. I don't want a replacement! I wanted them to alert all these other people who bought these dummies at the expo or do a recall or something like that to prevent potential death to babies . But they obviously have no intention and will not fullfill the duty of care and have done nothing so far. I wrote a second letter stating my disgust at them for offering me a replacement dummies and how dissapointed I was as it was evident nothing has been done or will be done to prevent potential injury. Well suprise suprise I haven't heard from Avent since.
I have tried and I can only hope that all the babies out there are safe and sound .

Thats horrible! How frustrating that they dont get it. I cant imagine how someone could think you wanted a replacement? I'd be asking for an investigation/product recall - all that Jazz.

They have a responsibility to prevent their product from KILLING babies.... :banghead:

And sure we're supposed to check dummies, and I do, but I dont know that I would always straight from the box? Its BRAND NEW... that stories has scared me a little, I'm glad you told it, I'll be much more diligent checking all my dummies thoroughly... because it would be so easy for bubba to choke in his cot without me knowing.

seeing as there hasn't been a national recall on Avent dummies recently you will prob find that they were old ones from a previous expo that the stall was trying to get rid of, hence the $1 price tag.

when dummies are stored in warm temperatures (like storage) it changes the structure of the rubber and hence they deteriorate and in your case fall to bits.

i have had this happen to me with all different brands of dummies after they are left in the car for a month unused, they dry out and crumble.

glad to hear your bubs didn't manage to swallow any of it.

i would be ringing the owners/managers of the expo and telling them to talk to the stall owner.
