Hi everyone,
im due to have my little girl in about 3 weeks and i will be breastfeeding but i would also like to use a dummy...
Does anyone recommend a brand of dummy that resembles a booby and that may work well with breastfeeding?
Thanks for help

The Mat ward where I had both of my babies recommended the Happy Baby Cherry shaped dummies - they actually supplied one for DD because she had to have phototherapy for jaundice and they find that the babies settle better under the lights if they have a dummy....

I found that these were the cheapest and I had no issues with breastfeeding because of a dummy (in fact DD was also encouraged to have a dummy to try and help her suck reflex become stronger because she didn't suck very well as a newborn).

My LC gave me the following advice me on baby bottle teats (which I guess should be relevant):
avoid the orthodontic ones (with one angled edge) and try to get one that is at least as long as the distance between the tip of your little finger and it's last joint.

I used the avent dummy, as they didn't have a huge round cherry shape (which I though was very un-nipple like! ) :D

hey there

I successfully used a dummy and breatfed my son for 6 months...it is possible!

However...I believe it is generally recomended to wait at least a few weeks before you introduce the dummy...I think we waited 3-4 weeks...

I used the orthodontic/flat shaped dummies, though I know these dont work for everyone...a lot of mothers in my mothers group liked the cherry shaped ones...so maybe any shape works, just a matter of finding one that suits bub???

The one I used is only sold in babies galore...latex...italian brand and I cant remember the name of it!!! (as I now only use cheapo ones...)

the hosp I went to with DD recommended the happy baby ones too, they gave one to DD in the SCN to help with her sucking reflex, didn't have any probs with her taking that dummy and breast feeding, I didn't give her the dummy for long though, basically only had it in the scn while she was there

DS2 had a dummy, and had no probs with breastfeeding him either, the ones he had were the ones with the upturned bit on the teat, they were the only ones he would suck on

I think the shape of orthodontic teats is quite different to the shape of orthodontic dummies...

im no expert though!

roxy- DS uses those ones now for when he sleeps its the only one he would take i thought the nuk funny shaped ones might be the go but then when i think about it they use the happy baby ones in the NICU.... my last midwives were so anti dummy and one night i had my finger in DS mouth while he was sucking and i was thinking to myself isn't this wat a dummy is for lol

Both my breastfed babies took to a Nuk dummy well. :)

They are VERY good quality dummies and shaped well.
After my two being so devoted to Nuks I would never use another!

Don't know that I'm using the right word for them:o, but I am meaning those angled ones with a "flat" side.

(thinking that I'm not explaining this any better :p, but I hope you all can work out what I mean!! :D)

Sarah took a liking to the Heinz cherry shaped ones, and she happily breastfed for 12 months.

Becky WILL NOT take a dummy (or a bottle) and I've tried every freaking shape, size, colour, material.... no way, no how, no matter what

And she's a baby who NEEEEEDS to suck on something. Eventually she found her middle two fingers, but when she's really upset I can't just grab her fingers and pop them in her mouth the way I used to with Sarah's dummy!

The ABA is not anti-dummy but they do recommend that you wait until feeding is established to introduce a dummy.

So that would be about a month maybe?

My breastfed DS used a Nuk dummy. Think he was 7 or 8 weeks when we introduced it. Will be using the same for this bub if the need arises.

 believe me... I even thought about getting one of "those" molding kits from an adult shop and making something in the shape of her hand out of food grade silicone for her!!!

I was pretty desperate there for a while :o I gave up with trying to give her a bottle at about 7 months. She drinks out of a straw just fine now. She won't take expressed milk either (it's from the source or not at all!) so she just has water, juice or even cows milk in a straw cup now. She's close enough to 12 months that it doesn't matter any more.

If you're choosing to use a dummy, I second the Happy Baby ones. The cherry shaped ones.

G uses them and took to them and nothing else. He was BF for 4 months (then stopped because of other reasons, not the dummy)

I have a friend who only used the Happy Baby ones, both her girls were breastfed till 12 months.

Honestly I planned on establishing feeding first but my first bub was a comfort sucker, LITERALLY 24/7.

So I gave him his dummy on the second day and just made sure he boobed for as much time as possible. I let him boob between my meals pretty much.

SO by doing that I kept the demand for my milk right up and he got to comfort suck all of the time.

Just think about it and make sure you boob as much as possible.

If you aren't doing anything, offer boob. If you are having a cuddle, offer boob.

It ALL adds up to helping establish a good milk supply while helping bonding between you and bubs PLUS there are tummy benefits for you as well. :)

SO I guess what I am trying to say is stick with your instinct and offer a dummy if you think bubs needs it, but don't forget to give bub boob as often as possible. Because sometimes it is difficult to adjust to being a Mum and it does take time to get used to breastfeeding a baby.

lol i was planning on taking some to the hospital with me...

I'd pack it anyway  I had the same thought when I went in to have DS - and he was one of those babies who had a great suck reflex and wanted to use it all the time!! He was leaving hickies on the backs of his hands , so I rang my mum and got her to bring a dummy in for me when she came in that day...he took to that dummy like a duck to water, and we had no feeding issues at all....

My son wouldn't take a dummy. I tried a number of different brands that were differently shaped but he wouldn't take to any of them. He tried for a bit but would get frustrated with it and I ended up being his human dummy for a few weeks. Besides, the times he did take a dummy, he was awful for the next feed as he was getting nipple confusion and so not latching on correctly. So I stopped trying.

It was a pain for that time but it was a blessing in disguise - I don't have to keep replacing the buggers and never had to go through that whole weaning from the dummy process :)

So my advice would be to buy a couple of different ones, shaped differently, but not be too surprised or upset if the baby doesn't take to any of them.

:iagree:

At the start I was really hoping DS would not want a dummy and I wanted to hold out as long as possible to give him one - but the sleep deprivation hit me hard and fast!

I was not worried about establishing supply because I had not heard it was a possible problem when i had DS, so I gave him a dummy on his second night in hospy to help him sleep. He BF about every 2 hours anyway, so got lots of boob-time.

We've always stuck with avent ones - DH & I both thought the cherry ones looked a bit funny, but we had a free sample (ask for free samples from the companies!) of each and DS preferred the avent. Later I also tried some nuk, but he just played with them:p
