View Full Version : Any bubs on Reflux medication?
My bubba has reflux and the initial suggestions from GP (Mylanta and thickening forumla with BF) haven't helped. She said to come back if they don't work and we'll look at meds.
I was wondering....
Is anyone here using medications for refulx? If so, which one? And has it helped your bubba? In what ways has it helped - eg less regurgitation, more settled baby, feeding less frequenlty, sleeping better etc.
Just weighing up if its worth going on them - its a big step to move to medication so want to know if its worth while.
Hi there,
My bubba isn't on any reflux medication YET, he has his 6 week Paed appointment tomorrow when i am going to talk to her about his vomiting! I am wanting to ask how much/often did/does your baby vomit. When feeding my little man - he is FF, i sit him up for his first burp after maybe 30 - 40mls (as i thought burping more might help) and he will vomit a large amount. I know that if he vomits with his first burp he will generally vomit large amounts with every burp. The thing i'm not sure about though is with some feeds he will only vomit the smallest amount and sometimes (very rarely) he won't vomit at all... What do you think? Was this similar to your daughter?
Thanks
Amy
Sorry to crash your thread, but just wanted to answer. I'm from the June mums group
My DS has been on reflux meds since he was about 6 weeks old. He vomitted lots, had lots of pain, crying, not sleeping properly etc.
We started on Zantac, slowly increasing as it didn't seem to be working. He was then put on Losec a couple of months ago, starting on the 10mg. After a month or so, that was increased to the 20mg one which he now has 1 tablet a day. It has made a huge amount of difference. I can't express how much it's helped him. He'll actually drink his bottle now without screaming & crying (I still add thickener), he has slept 12 hours overnight since he was about 4 months & is no longer in pain. I don't regret for 1 second starting him.
I can totally understand your reluctance, but if your bub has reflux, the meds should help immensely (sp?)
Hmm maybe my bubba doesn't have reflux because he doesn't seem to be in pain.. he cries usually when he is hungry and then only a few other times throughout the day but it doesn't take long to settle him.... and vomiting doesn't seem to hurt him either... maybe it's something else? Something where he just vomits alot!
Maybe try using some infacol this always helped DD1 get up her wind. Might make a difference ????
DD3 is on Zantac for reflux made a great difference no more screaming and sleeping like a little angel, she has been a different baby since we have had her on it
Yeah im not sure, i really hope there's something that can be done though because if he keeps vomiting like this i don't think he will put on weight!
We have a Paed appnt tomorrow so i willl discuss it with her!
Thanks ladies

My bubs got diagnosed with reflux from 8wks old. She has thickened formula and meds(losec). Both together has made such a huge difference. Without them she spews up the whole amount of feeds. Its a blessing!

I think my bub has reflux too, i am taking him to doctors today about it, i asked the CHN about it a couple of weeks ago when i was there, thinking that if bubs had reflux he would scream and she said not all babies scream and fuss with reflux. Bubs spews up almost his whole feed not directly after a feed but within about a hour of a feed.

My DS1 was on reflux meds till he was 10 months, DS2 is about to start on it too. DS1 was on Imresrapol? not sure on spelling but it is Losec in the liquid form, GP's will give you a script for tablets usually which means you have to crush them, mix with water and give to your baby, Paed's will give you a script for the Imres or also known as losec suspension (easier to remember).... you cant get it from normal chemists only suspension chemists - where the grind and mix meds....
The suspension form is expensive... it varies from $50-$70 a bottle (if you do get it... please dont shake it... it has stickers all over the bottle saying shake well.. so for a very long time we did and the medication was not working at all... we couldn't work out why... our Paed sent us to another chemist incase we were getting bad batches even though its rare... we told the pharamsist the problem we were having and straigh away he said do not shake the bottled! it does something to the gas and the med does not work... turn it instead approx 10-12 times that does the trick!), they say it has a life span of one refridgerated month but it always expires before then... we found at approx 2.5 weeks... you will know because your baby starts screaming again.... word of advice with the liquid form they can put flavouring in it... strawberry... my son hated it with flavouring but more so when they vomit it will stain carpet clothing bedding etc... unflavoured is whiteish.
I ask my Paed about mylanta instead of losec... from what i understood and i may be wrong so speak to your doctor, but mylanta is more so to help with the pain, where as losec is designed to target the stomach acid and stop it comming up and buring... its an ant acid.
Im lead to belive no reflux medication will stop the vomiting, but they can stop or reduce the stomach acid burn.
Were you informed on things to help with the reflux such as having bubs upright, not laying flat after feeds etc etc?? if not you can google it theres lots of handy hints.
If this is your first reflux bub hang in there.. its not easy but it will get easier, depending on the severity, your bubs may not like car seats prams or anything where they sit upright or lay flat, you might not have that problem though.
I bought a fisher price power plus electric swing i foudn it a god send for DS1 with his reflux as it can recline etc theres a leaver thingy at the back, but so far DS2 hates it, they are very expensive new about $250)
In answer to your questions... my son had quiet bad reflux so thickened formula did nothing but give him diahorrea (and for this son too) the medication helped slightly... he still cried alot and was in pain but it was worse when he was not on the med's (could scream for 15-17 hours then pass out) it didn't stop the vomiting, my son vomited so much he use to feed every 45mins to 2 hours depending how much he brought back up and that was 24 hours a day.. at 19 months he still doesn't sleep threw the night... and no he was not a settled baby.
I dont mean to scare you.. just as i said my sons was quiet severe... but i would like to give you some advice... hang in there stay strong and dont be affraid to ask for help... you will have good and bad days... on those bad days you need all the help you can get... reflux bubbas often like to be held up right for long periods (again depending on the severity) maybe look into a pouch? i found it a life saver... also any family or friends who could pop around when you need to get out for a few min walk or take a shower etc... you will need time out.
It gets easier and it doesn't last forever!!!
best of luck.. pm me if you have any questions... dont be scared of what ive typed after all i went back for seconds hehe and he has reflux too!!!
:iagree::iagree::iagree:You have received some wonderful advice there! My DD is on Losec and we now have a happy sleeping baby! She still feeds 4th hourly at night  but at least she is sleeping after not screaming!
