Well DS1 is having a 4th birthday party on saturday and I am making him a 3D dinosaur cake. :o
What type of icing should I use for it?
It says to frost it.
Also, what type of cake would be best, so it doesn't break away?
Its going to be 2 plain cakes. I am just hoping that it all works out.

Greens brand butter cake mix(it is yummm and moist)....make 24 hours before icing, makes it easier to ice. And I would use buter cream icing....I can pm you the recipe if you like? It is easy to make and easy to work with. I ice and decorate the night before the party and leave the cake uncovered in a cool place and it has laways remained in perfect condition....even on a hot day.
Good luck, you will do fine....kids birthday cakes are easier than they look!!

Oh thankyou, could I please get the icing recipe. I have tried a butter icing before but all what it tasted like was butter, wasn't very nice at all. Oh and I am wanting to put green or blue dye in it, that won't reck it will it?

 The greens butter cake one is cheap and yummy. For a basic icing, I just melt about 100gms of so of butter, and mix with icing sugar. Then just put a couple of drops of colouring if you want it.

Alternatively, I sometimes use cream cheese, whipped nice and smooth and icing sugar. really yummy :D

hi,
i use the womens weekly basic butter cake recipe for all our cakes.
125grams butter
1 teaspoon vanilla essence(optional)
3/4 cup(165g) caster sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups9225grams) self-raising flour
1/2 cup(125ml) milk

preheat oven to moderate(180c)
gress and line pan(s)
beat butter sugar and essence(optional) in small bowl with electric mixer until light and fluffy.
beat in eggs one at a time until combined, stir in flour and milk in two batches.
spread mixture into prepared pan(s). bake in moderate oven until cooked. stand in pan for 5-10min then turn onto wire rack to cool.

if you want chocolate cake replace 1/2 cup of the flour with 1/2 cup of sifted cocoa powder
this recipe is equvilent to a 340gram packet of white wings golden buttercake mix
make cake the day before required so cake is firm and icing/cream is easy to apply

fluffy frosting

1 cup(220gram) castor sugar
1/3 cup(80ml) water
2 egg whites

combine sugar and water in small sauspan, stir with a WOODEN spoon over high heat, without boiling until sugar dissolves. boil uncovered without stirring, about 3-5min or until syrup is slightly thick.
when thick remove the pan from heat allow bubbles to reside then test the syrup by dropping 1 teaspoon into a cup of cold water.
the syrup should faorm a ball of soft sticky toffee when rolled between finger tips
if syrup changes colour it has been cooked to long and you need to start again.
while syrup is boiling, beat eggwhites in small ball with electric mixer until stiff, keep beating (or whites will deflate) until syrup is ready.
when sryup is ready, allow bubbles to subside then pour a very thin stream onto the egg whites with mixer operating on medium speed. if syrup is added to quickly to the egg whites, frosting will not thicken. continue beating and adding syrup till all syrup is used continue beating until frosting stands in stiff peaks.
at this point flavouring and colouring can be added.
apply to cake staright away as frosting doesnt take long to set.

i made a princess doll cake for my daughters first school party using these and they were a big hit, i ended up making a mulitude of cakes for her school friends including a fairy mushroom cake and a pirate ship. i found the kids prefer the frosting to the butter icing as its lighter and much nicer to eat

good luck with it
