hi chickies,

I'm very new to the cloth bum thing.. still getting my stash going.

just wondering if anyone can recommend a nappy that doesn't leak at the back. I so far have some 'bum ware' and 'bitti d'lish' but on DS he seems to get leaks at the back.. as in the top back, his singlet is often wet :( .. and this is after less than an hour with a fresh one on

is it the brand? the size? (I got med in both) something I'm doing?

I really want to keep using them.. but sick of changing wet clothes, sheets and blankets all the time

thanks!

The only things I can think of ATM are making sure the elastic at the back is a snug fit and make sure the liners and/or boosters aren't poking out the top at the back. If you are using them at night, you may need to upgrade to some night nappies if he's filling the ones you have as they have heaps more absorbency than day nappies. If he's not soaking the nappy you can always put a lanolised woolen cover over the nappy which should stop any wicking problems.

they definitely shouldn't be leaking after an hour, it's not the brand, cos this shouldn't happen..

do you wash with a detergent that does not have any brighteners/softeners etc? these'll coat the nappy and make it water resistant.

are they too large a size? the elastic should be stretched somewhat to be fitting.
also i second checking that the inserts aren't peeking out under the cover.

thanks for the ideas ladies

I'm using AIO's so there isn't any booster to 'stick out' .. maybe I should try ones with boosters? I was hoping to stick with AIO's as want something 'husband friendly' and well.. I'm lazy and want the ease of them :o

maybe I should check my washing stuff.. I use dynamo front loader liquid, just a small amount.. maybe I'll try a different brand - I have heard good things about amolin. Also I have been rinsing with a little vinegar

Also I have been rinsing with a little vinegar

i just wanted to let you know vinegar is really bad for pul and elastic.

is the baby singlet tucking in to the nappy a little bit???? that will cause leaks too

that's your problem i reckon! dynamo will most definitely contain brighteners/softeners, that will put a repellant coating on your nappies...

go get one that's grey water friendly, that tends to be right (eg seventh generation, earth choice, planet ark aware sensitive.. all available at supermarkets).
and check the label to see if they mention anything about brighteners or softeners (if they mention vivid colours or whites, then yes they contain it).

also you may need to do a strip wash to take that coating/residue off; just rinse in the machine on hot water with a drop of dish detergent, and rinse again on hot water until no more suds.

the itti bitti dlish have that flap booster.. if that sticks out, it'll wick onto clothes.

thanks ladies...

told you I was a newbie

hopefully I can salvage them with a strip wash and proper washing from now on :)
