For those who live in Queensland and are experiencing problems during their pregnancies and they don't know if they should be going to the hospital, or ringing their doctors, give 13 HEALTH a try - just ring it and you will be put through to a qualified nurse who will advise accordingly.
Its also supposed to be good for other things such as if someone is vomiting and you are concerned, if you have cut or burned yourself etc. Its to take the pressure off the Emergency Depts and save wasted journeys etc.

I used this hotline last weekend when my DS was sick. It was excellent to be able to speak with someone and seek advice on whether I should see a dr withouth having to bundle bub into the car at night when he was unwell.
While they didn't give specific advice, they did run through things to look out for and when to be concerned. I'm a big fan!!

I think it is going to increase the demand and pressures on the Emergency Departments. Doing an assessment over the phone is difficult because of human nature some people over dramatise their symptoms and other underestimate their symptoms. If in any doubt the RNs on the line will refer the caller for medical assessment.
I rang the other day when DD fell down the internal stairs. I found it really good because they gave me a list of symptoms to look for with head injuries and some of these I didn't know. They also told me when to call an ambulance and that I should just get a GP to look at her.
Fortunately she is fine, she has a bruise on the forehead and bruised legs and feet but no serious head injury.
