View Full Version : roof restoration? who?
we've just been given a quote for a roof restoration coming in at$5,800. this is a huge saving of over $3000 to put a sign out the front and write a letter and allow them to take photos. anyway, the thought of actually re- roofing crossed our mind- has anyone done this and what is the cost difference roughly? we have an average 3 bedroom home, with lounge, family and kitchen. single garage.
what are others experiences with this?

Sounds like Modern. They're expensive and like to give 'discounts' to people who will put a sign out the front. From what I've heard, not so great when things go wrong.
It really depends on what sort of roof you have.
If your roof is terracotta, then get it cleaned and repointed. This might cost you $1000, but I doubt any more than that! He might even be able to quote a new roof for you!! You see, roof tilers aren't actually expensive and quite the contrary to other tradesmen, don't get paid stacks. When you buy roof tiles, you go to Monier, Boral etc. to get your tiles and included in the price is laying. If you go direct to the roof tiler it ends up a lot cheaper.
If it's concrete, then if I were you, I'd call a roof tiler and get them to repoint it, then buy some roof paint and paint it myself. It's a piece of cake - friends of ours did this and just hired a compressor and an air gun to do it - it cost them less than $500 to do and took just a weekend.
These days, it doesn't matter what kind of surface you want to clean - there is pretty much always a product out there which can paint that surface.
Hope this helps you!

My advice to you would be to get other quotes from a couple of well-known companies as well as a few local co's. I know what company your talking about & I have worked for them as well as most of their opposition co's. Unfortunately, sometimes you are told you need a new roof, when in reality, you may just need a re-point,re-bed.
Did the salesman guy do the speil, of this display home price is only for today? Did he then ring his manager & say that you wont be doing business with them today? did he change his mind at the end and say that you can only have that special price till the weekend? Its all a big gimmick, so please look into it b4 u sign those contracts.
thanks guys- that is a big help. my hubby is pretty handy so he could very well give it a go.
We actually had the weekend- he came out on saturday and said we could have until monday morning and then all the money will run out! he said that he already had a couple of houses that morning that signed up and they only have so much money to be saved on the homes! i knew that was a load of c*&p but didn't say much.
thanks so much, i will most definately look around.

Dont be suprised if you get a call in the next month or so saying that the finance for once of the houses he had already signed up had fallen thru. You will hear a crappy story about how he needs just one more display home in your area & how the promotion really needs to end in your suburb. They normally knock another $1000 off the price they already offered you, sometimes more.....
If the sales guy gets really desperate, he might even phone another month later after that, offering even more off the price providing you leave the sign out front longer..... Most of these salesguys are just puppets, working for ruthless sales managers who will do anything, and i mean anything for a sale. Most of them have no conscience or hearts..... :(

I tend to agree there - salesmen can be really pushy.
Tell them it's too expensive.
That sort of money just seems to me like a lot of money for a roof restoration - you wouldn't be paying much - if any - more for a brand new roof, and even less if you DIY.
