I'm having problems with Wee Man's MCNs...they smell of ammonia even after washing & are giving him terrible nappy rash (so am currently using disposables). It's been suggested that they may have an ammonia build up on them.

How do I get rid of this? I've tried rinsing & rinsing...no effect. Also tried stripping but it didn't seem to do much. Someone suggested bleach but I'm very hesitant to use any because I don't want to wreck the PUL (which chlorine bleach will do but I'm not sure if a non-chlorine bleach is ok for MCNs or not).

Help! I hate using disposables & have all these beautiful MCNs that I can't use at the moment.

Sunlight does fix a lot of problems..

Otherwise I would soak with some nappisan and tea-tree oil.

I think tea-tree is the one..

Yep...tried leaving out in the sun (I always line dry them if I can)...even for a couple of days at one stage. Also tried soaking in nappisan but didn't make a difference. & tried adding lavender & tea tree oil. It's very frustrating!

I've stripped them today using dishwashing liquid (normally I use baking soda/vinegar), so will see if that makes a difference.

have you tried soaking the inserts in vinegar for a bit? it should neutralise the ammonia.
