View Full Version : How simple is it really?
Is it really as simple as knowing when you ovulate and getting the timing of bd correct and then you're pregnant?
For those of you who got pregnant within 6 months of TTC (and therefore are definitely fertile), what made the difference in the month you conceived? Did you have trouble working out when ovulation was on previous cycles, or just get your timing wrong? Or did you get the timing definitely right for 4 or 5 cycles and then, finally you were pregnant?
I know that 50% of women get pregnant within 3 months, 75% in 6 months, 90% in 1 year ... BUT, those figures don't assume all the women are using a BBT chart, and OPKs, etc.
thanks!

Well for me I did notice that my CM was a lot better this month leading up to O, I don't know why it was I wasn't taking anything. Maybe we just have more fertile cycles every now and again? I guess a lot of things influence them, even what we eat.
It's an interesting question though. We have just got our BFP right on the 6 month mark. Weird aye???

I've been temping and charting my cycles on and off for ten years so I'm really familiar with it. I also have very regular, predictable cycles of 29 days and I O on CD 17 most of the time. So that makes things much easier.
Of the four times I have been pregnant, the first was an accident (m/c'd), the second was my daughter, who was also a happy accident - I ovulated really early that month on CD10 and we got caught out ;). The third was planned and concieved second month trying (m/c'd) and this baby was conceived first month trying and we only bd'd once on the day of ovulation. So we're pretty fertile LOL.
I think charting and temping are absolutely invaluable if you're trying to pregnant. Aside from helping to get pregnant, it can help you identify lots of problems that may be preventing it as well. I think they should teach it to girls in school.
Hi,
We got PG 1st go with Ben and weren't doing anything special, 2nd month off pill, 2nd time round took 4months and I was taking temps, doing O tests from chemist etc but m/c at 11wks. We are TTC again now after 1 cycle but not ready to get too obsessed yet, we are going to relax a bit 1st and see what happens! I'm religiously taking my folate and eating well though!:fingerscrossed:
Hi - it took us 5 months to fall with DS. The first couple of months we didn't do anything, just went with the flow and nothing happened. I then started taking my temps and it wasn't until the 3rd month of that when we plotted them into a graph that we realised I was O'ing earlier than we previously thought...
Hi,
I think the key is that for most women, they don't actually ovulate every month, so that's why the 6month period before needing to investigate. You ovulate even less as you get older, that's how they come up with the stats on your chances of conceiving once over 30, 35 and 40+.
I was 31 when we conceived DS, and it was 5months after coming off the pill but we were also in the middle of moving interstate, and weren't together for about 3 of the months at the right time. For this pregnancy we conceived 6weeks after our implanon came out (I was 33 then and am still).
So my answer is that you can time when you think you should be ovulating by your cycles, but the reason you don't fall on a particular month could be that you haven't actually o'd that month.

We were extremely lucky imo. I have endometriosis & went off the pill expecting it to take a while. It took 3 cycles to get to a 28day cycle & then I fell pregnant. No "trying" so to speak, it was a case of if it happens it happens.
I just wish all couples were as lucky as us.

Okay, This is my 3rd pregnancy but this is the first time I've used charting to concieve. We started charting in December 2005 & I am now 13weeks pregnant :smiliedance: .. The last month I did a couple of things differently, I used 'Robutussin', a cough mixture to help give me more EWCM, I'd heard it off a few people & it really helped as I normally only got EW after Ovulation(defeating the purpose), it's a decongestant so it breaks down the mucous in your body & it comes out any way it can, kinda gross when you think about it...heehee, we also DTD on a Lunar conception date, this is the first time my lunar dates have coincided with Ovulation so I had to give it a bash :p & lastly, I didn't rush of to the loo after DTD like I normally do, I wasn't letting any of those little critters get away  so I just stayed put & went to sleep.... This could all just be a coincidence, but hey, whatever works.
Good luck.
Jac
I got pg after 9mths of trying the first time, only because i used to temp and use maybe baby did i know that i didnt ovulate on day 14 it was always around 16-20 (ovulating later than about day 16 means the eggs not that great and probably little chance of fertilisation) the month i did conceive i had really good egg white CM and soon as i saw it i said 'right get on down to it now!!!", the 2nd time (just last month) was a pure chance but I know i again had good CM on the day we did it! I think having good CM is the real key to it all as it is what helps the sperm the most. I have heard green tea is a good one for helping with CM, for me its just the month of april as we conceived in april both times!!!!
Hey Jac,
How much Robutussin did you take and when? I like the sound of it!::yelclap:

Well, this was our first time TTC-ing and I did the whole charting of BBT & CM for the first 3 months. I was always thinking about it & trying to time it perfectly.
In March however, I stopped obsessing on it because I didn't really want to fall pregnant that month - would've made it a December baby.
:o Well, that's when we fell pregnant & bubs is due mid Dec.
So, I would recommend knowing your cycle, but not pre-occupying yourself with it!
