I want to move back to the Newtown area, but at the moment the closest house available that suits our needs is in Rhodes.... What is that place like.... Is it close enough??? TO work in Newtown and to socialis in newtown...

Rhodes isn't THAT far away! It's about 15 minute drive in good traffic (I work there) but no, probably not close enough if you want to be near Newtown.
Also, there are a few other issues with Rhodes to consider, such as the removal of toxins from the waterside area. I don't think it's a good place to spend to much time, there is always revolting smoking spilling from the 'Rhodes Chimney' as we call it.
Good luck!

cool... well Rhodes has been taken off the cards. But what do you think of Botany.
I would prefer Botany over Rhodes anyday. Its still a distance to travel to Newtown but has some great cafes and some nice drives/ walks in that area.
I am presuming that even though you love Newtown you are after an area where you can get a 'family' type home, and plus Newtown is very expensive... If Newtown itself is out of the question, can I suggest Earlwood? Its not too far from Newtown, its on the bus route, has some cafes and nice walks and the houses tend to be bungalows on nice big blocks.

The only real reason i want a place near Newtown is because it is where we used to live (well Stanmore,) my work is there and I used to walk along King street everyday. So it is the only place that feels like home to me.
I don't mind driving to Newtown, but I would like it to be close and the place that i live, I would like to be friendly to walkers. I like to work to shops and parks.
We are with the Navy, so I'm hoping a place in the right area comes up with them, so price really isn't an issue, but if they don't have anything for us. I guess we will be looking.
The place in Botany is near Botany rd and near the hwy to the airport (can't think of what that is called right now) and I'm just a little concerened that the fumes from the airport might be a little high and stinky... Is that what Botany is like. Is Botany a very industrial area.? I've been told that east garden shopping centre is the local... are there no shopping centres closer??

We were in Stanmore....and have moved to a much bigger house in Marrickville,.. we love it here! Maybe look at Petersham, Marrickville,. Summer Hill or Dulwich Hill? Even Croydon/Ashfield are close'ish.:)

I would agree with S_J_R. Definitely stay away from Botany. The innerwest is a great place to live for young families. Have you thought about Camperdown? It is walking distance to Glebe, Newtown, Leichhardt and Annandale.

What about Enmore (it shares it boarder with Newtown) or Chippendale or Darlington (also shares boarder with Newtown). Or Erskinville (shares boarder too), Ersky has a lovely villagey feel to it and has loads of terrace houses (well frankly all the inner city suburbs of Sydney do).
Or praps Redfern (East Redfern is lovely)? Or Surry Hills? (I love Surry Hills).
Google Newtown and find a map and then scale it out, you'll see how all the suburbs are the next ones over from Newtown.
If you go further out, ie Summer Hill, Dulwhich Hill, Lewisham, Petersham, there is no way of walking to King St. You'd have to train it in.

hmmmmm:o ,..gawd,.... :o can you ask them to have another look for you?:o
Out of those, I would prob go Cromer,.. it is really close to Manly, Narabeen beaches,..and northern beaches are lovely.
Oh honey that is not a great list to choose from for someone who wants to be close to Newtown (I dont mean to offend anyone who lives in these areas, just that I know how much LP loves Newtown).
I would go for Cromer for the northern beaches as SJR said, but that area is such a long way from the city and inner west. You really would find yourself just living up at the beaches - but there are worse places to live!
The other alternative is Miranda. Its close to all the nice things in the south - beaches, national park etc. plus there is a big Westfield there and you just take the Princes Hwy up to Newtown. Even though it is still far, it would be definitely quicker to Newtown than Cromer would.
If they post you to one of those places can you keep looking for somewhere else?

Carlingford- No...its not at all like newtown. Its very surburbia.
Eastwood- Same as above.
Wattlegrove- dont know it at all.
Miranda- probably more likely to get cafes..
Holsworthy- dont know it
Kirrawee- dont know it.
Cromer- Lovley northern beaches suburb. You would have plenty to do around the beaches.
Baulkham Hills- very very surburban and a long way from the city
Hope that helps some...
I love Newtown too, I used to work there and lived in St Peters and was very handy to Newtown...Erskineville is also close as another option...
Out of the list you gave Im biased as I grew up on the Northern Beaches and went to school in Cromer Id choose there just to be near the beach, there is great shopping, eating and generally lots to do you cant still get to Newtown fairly easily by car just not in peak hr!!
Good luck with it all....

NO once we are in a place that is it, I think....??? I think if we were to choose a home of only two bedrooms and then had another baby we might be alowed to move but then, we would have to pay for the move.

The peak hour is what I'm worried about, I dont want to get stuck in traffic with a kiddie in the car screaming at me to get him home. ?? I would do this once and then never travel again... Is there train access in Cromer?
Is taking kids on a train good or bad idea?

sadly there are no trains on that side of the city but there are buses and also the ferry from manly...the fact that it is sooooo lovely there is enough for me to want to go and live back there hehe... can you take a place and then apply for somewhere else? I'm not sure about the moving out of the house and into another unless you have a pretty good reason, also I think it would be at your own cost?.
oooh ok im not sure why they moved so dont know the circumstances.... IMO as someone who has moved so far away from sydney and i miss it terribly I would do anything just to be "in" sydney no matter where iykwim... at least I can drive to everything if im there whereas no hope living here....

I undrstand what you mean, but I will be living in sydney by January whether I like it or not. (ad I'm more than happy too) but when I say I hve friends in Newtown it is more like I used to work there and it is just the fact that it is familiar and my old work mates are still there, my acupuncturist, my osteopath and my massage therapist. I'm not a big drive, infact I get a little anxious with the idea of driving with my son in the car as he hates the car for long trips and it stresses me out thinking we would be stuck in traffic. I love walking and on a recent holiday to sydney we were staying at the end of missenden rd in Camerdown and on a daily basis I walked to Broadway and kIng street in Newtown. I love the idea of walking to parks and the butcher and to get flowers and stoping of at the pond near the uni to show Spencer the swans. I walked in to the city twice and loved the ease of getting a quick taxi back and I was home in 10mins.
I'm just in Love and I would rather stay here than more back to a place I dont love.
The only thing I dont love about where I am now is that it takes me 5 hours to fly to see family otherwise I can walk and gather things for the day, but no one knows me here.
sorry for the blah blah blah....

Oh LP, thats a bugger the Botany house has gone. It really was the closest. As someone said, there are no trains in Cromer but generally it is fine to take kids on the train. Do I remember you saying that you will be working around Newtown? If so, DO NOT get the Cromer house!!!! That is one of the worst commutes in Sydney, it will take you up to 1.5 hrs each way in peak hour.
Of those available now, I would go for Miranda. Or have any others come available?

He thinks that the place in newington would be better as it is closer to a train station...Not LP friendly tho...hmm who matters in this relationship....

Just take it!!!! Drummoyne is absolutely lovely, by far the best of any suburb you have mentioned. It would be worth compromising on public transport for such a gorgeous area.
What train station can he walk to from Newington? I thought there was only Olympic Park there and thats just for special events... Oh is it Homebush?
Carlton is near Hurstville.

Bubhub hates me tonight :(
I tried to reply before.....
anyway get on the phone to DFA first thing in the morning and take the drummoyne house.
City busses galore along vistoria rd. (no need for the timetable - just rock up and one will come in 5 minutes tops)
10 minutes to Newtown
Technically inner west (even if it isnt on the inner west train line)
cafes, shops, a bit funky, Balmain is close, pretty "upmarket" I reckon anyway......
Newington is in the middle of nowehere.
Homebush (I'm guessing here) would be your local station is very quiet and doesn't get many trains. I would not class it as an "easy commuting suburb"

Carlton is on the trainline that joins up with the Eastern Suburbs, if you were wanting to get to Newtown you'd catch the train to Redfern and walk up with the masses towards Sydney Uni.
We live in Rockdale (two stops towards the city from there) and dh works at Paddington and Broadway, both more that do-able on the train. The train takes 20 minutes to the city from our stop.
We catch the train a bit with our dd, best out of peak hour for us but thats okay.
Botany Bay is about 5 minutes drive from Carlton and has a lot of safe netted swimming beaches that are great for kiddliewinks.
So there you go, more food for thought!!

Oh, and the suburb itself is a bit of a mixture depending on where you live (like Rockdale) but there's a small shopping strip at the station and I think the closest big supermarkets would be Kogarah or Rockdale. Lots of californian bungalows as they call 1920s houses around here. Big population mix, an interesting area!

Narraweena - closer, yep. About 18ks north of CBD but that area has useless public transport - so what should be a 20 minute drive can take 1.5 hrs by PT or 1+hours in peak hour traffic.

You are right, Five Dock isn't on the train line, and the buses would go down Parramatta Rd to the city I think. So it wouldn't be a good commute. But its a great area, went to the Italian fiesta there a couple of months back (not that that happens that often) and it seemed like a good shopping strip. Not sure about living next door to a car repair place as have never done it, but their hours are usually very civilised! 131500 is the transport info line, and add .com.au or gov.au and you can get transport info for the area - and other places of course!
Good luck, I hope you find something that fits the bill soon!!

South Coogee is on a reasonable bus service to the city, and to bondi junction. Can be a haul in peak hour, but thats Sydney for you!! Coogee is a great beach for kids, and at the end of Cuzco St on the rock platform there is a small rock pool which is wonderful for a plunge. If you like surfing Maroubra is the way to go, and the rock pool at the northern end on the rock platform there is a treat, big enough for laps.
