View Full Version : How to feed????
My sweet DD2 is making me cry today.
She hasn't had a proper feed since morning(she is breast fed)....just latch on for a couple of min n then cries n detaches herself from my breast. we have done this 5-6 times since morning.I don't know what to do?
Also she is in the habit of sucking her fingers or thumb since last two weeks. but she doesn't take dummy at all.
What should i do?

:hugs: to you! I know how you feel - my DD3 has stages where she's a pain in the **** to feed! It's really stressful, and just makes me feel like I have no idea what I'm doing.
I highly recommend you see a Lactation Consultant. There are great ones around, and are definately worth it.
Good luck.

Since she is sucking her fist or fingers I'd be inclined to say she might be hungry.
Start eating a nice big bowl of porridge every morning, Give bub as much boob as possible and in the meantime, have an ice warm bath with bub and feed there.
The warmth will help you let down and help bub relax. Let bub just enjoy the boob as a snuggle and talk to her and just enjoy the bond. Feeding will come with that.
Oats help to increase your supply and are just generally good for energy anyway.
is it normal for 3 month olds to suck fingers....
she doesnt take boobs/feed most of the time when she is sucking fingers....is it a habit thing coz she cries if we take it out.... sometimes she does that at bedtime n sleeps soon that way......maybe its a comfort thing coz we have put her in the cot to sleep at night time....
i don't like her putting fingers in mouth....can i stop it someway....
Just jumping in as a May Mummy, but if it's still continuing, have you thought about getting her checked out at the docs? I only ask, because first time round with DD I had the same issue, and it ended up being that she had a raging throat infection, and so it was obviously killing her to suck. Cleared up in 2 days with antibiotics, so we went back to happy bubba and Mummy....may be worth checking out
Perfectly normal to suck fingers, and no, not a lot you can do with the finger sucking - it is a comfort thing, and if it's helping her sleep I'd be loath to want her to stop it! She will stop this eventually

hi alabama, i dont think there is any way to stop the fingers in the mouth. just distract the fingers and put the boob in when you can. sucking fingers can also be a sign of teething. Not that i would expect to see teeth in a three month old but the teeth are moving and that can be a trouble. If she is upset with the breast and appears to be in some pain, i would give the teething gels a try. Maybe try to put her on the breast every hour or so, just to keep her intrest, and the supply really going strong. and also make sure you are relaxed and not worried, have a bath or a quick shower if that helps. Hi alabama,
The finger sucking sounds like a comfort thing to me. My DD does this as well, she refuses to take a dummy on most occassions, and will now suck two fingers. When she is hungry i tend to take the fingers out and quicky pop the boob in her mouth and she doesn't mind. But when i just take the fingers out, she gets grumpy... During the day, i give her a toy to put into her mouth, as they are now feeling textures with their toung.
I find that of a night the fingers are better than a dummy... they use it as a self settling thing and you dont have to go back in to put the dummy back in their mouth!!!
Oh and Marie - great to see a Grandma on here too... you must be so proud with little ones around now.
