have you tried a humidifier (hire from chemist). not sure if its appropriate in this situation. are you sure its not croup. does she sound like she's struggling through the coughs. maybe you should ring up the health hotline (in WA its called health direct, but don't know about other states) and see if they have some advice.
as an alternative to humidifier you can take them in a steamy bathroom for 15 minutes or so , just run the hot water. might make a difference.
As the PP said try the humidifier first and if that doesn't touch it then make an appointment with your doc asap.
Humidifier will help mild croup and most chesty coughs but bad croup will require meds along with chest infections etc. - asthma isn't helped by humidifiers at all.

How old is she? I resorted to cough medicines a few times for DD, just at night. We have the vaporiser which helps a bit. But the cough syrup can soothe their throat and calm their system long enough for them to fall asleep. I'd suggest talking to a pharmacist tomorrow.

actually when my DH gets coughs sometimes and we have no medicine i get him to eat yoghurt or drink milk because dairies like that produce a mucous that coats and soothes the throat. probably will only provide temp relief

well thanks guys took her to the doc and he said tonsilitis?? buh?
She is on anti biotics but still has the cough. Humidifyer works sometimes, but not always. i might try some cough medicine. I havent heard a croup cough before but I have been told it is like a bark gravelly and yucky. hers is more like I have a tickle in my throat and its keeping me a wake. She is 13 months.

If the cough is unproductive, meaning she isn't coughing anything up, then its not recommended to give a cough suppressant for kids under two yrs.
You poor thing! Night coughs are horrible!
For over 2yrs - Linctus Tussinol / Tussinol (spelling)
Under two - Not really much you can do - I rub DD's throat area with Vic's... that seems to help!
Good Luck:fingerscrossed:

Has this cough followed a cold? The cough may not be coming from her chest, if it sounds like a dry cough, chances are it is caused by a nasal drip. You could try an antihistamine. If you don't like to medicate her try burning some eucalyptus oil or put some on a hanky (out of reach) Elevating her bed head helps too. You could aslo try a baby nasal spray.
Is there any history of Ashma in your family? One of the first signs of ashma is a night cough.
I would suggest seeing the doc for peace of mind.

Is there a family history of asthma? If it's croup you'll know, it's the most horrid sound to a mother's ears! I have 3 sons and they all suffer with croup and asthma! Try a spoonfull of honey, it helps to lubricate an irritated throat. How long has it been going on for? I'd go see your doctor just to be sure especailly if the cough is not associated with a runny nose as most children cough because the mucus runs down the throat producing a cough.
