View Full Version : Can you freeze cheese?

As the title suggests - I am trying to find out if I can freeze cheeze. I mean I have previousy frozen milk or butter/margarine, bread & sandwich/deli meats if I have bought it in bulk... then I just let it defrost naturally in the fridge or on the sink on a cool day etc. But what about cheese? Can I buy this in bulk and freeze it? and if so do I do it as a block form or should I grate it or something? Any experiences or info would be handy thanks :thumbsup:

:yes: I always freeze my bags of grated cheese and just grab a handful as needed, it defrosts in minutes.

I've done it once it wasn't too bad but don't freeze the plastic processed stuff it dies!

Has anyone tried freezing a block of cheese - you know like 500g or 1kg? And how well does it defrost?
i use to freeze blocks of 1kg cheese, it defrosted fine but i found that i breaks up really easy especially when trying to cut slices for the kids sandwiches.
i always freeze grated cheese and its fine.

Dunno, mine never stays in there long enough! LOL
I would say i have used cheese that has been frozen for 2 months, i have never frozen in a block though, just the grated stuff. Hubby grabs a handful and puts it on his sandwiches in the morning and it is fine by lunch. I do it with kids lunch.

Thanks ladies :D So sounds like if I wanted to buy say 2 big blocks at the same time, then it might be best to leave one whole in the fridge for slicing etc & grate one up and freeze it... Then I get the best of both worlds without one block going mouldy before we get to it.
I'm just trying to work out ways to space out shopping trips much further than weekly now that we've moved out to the country and the supermarkets not just around the corner :no:

i buy 2 1kg blocks a fortnight one i grate and the other i slice i then put it into ziplock bags(about 250grams in each bag) then i just get a bag out as i need it and sit it on the sink for about 10min to defrost.

I always freeze grated cheese. I'm not sure how long it's meant to last but the bag we have in there at the moment has been there maybe just over 3mths. I used it a few days ago and it was perfectly fine.:)
